The Submarine RacesBefore I met my fifth husband Mel outside Yolanda's House Of Mops that blessed night, he had only been to Canada
once - in the summer of '76 with his Dad and uncle Sylvester for the submarine races when it never stopped pouring
rain. (That was a ffew years before Mel ended up in the ditch from that errant pinata.)
Anyway, Mel and I did manage to make our way twice to the Great White North and I'll tell all about it after I walk the
emu, clear the candy wrappers out of the woodshed, take my nerve pills and have a bit of a lie-down.

Vegetable SoupLily: Would you like a roll with that soup?
Jim: Oh, no thanks, Lily. I'm married.

AngelicaAngelica sits in Chemistry 101 next to the man she's never said hello to but will marry in
13 years by the light of a slippery moon. Angelica dresses all in black, showers with raspberry
gel, eats macaroni for breakfast, collects rare and unusual pinatas and dances the fandango when her parents go out.
Since she keeps so much to herself, one would think her lonely but she actually thrives in a secret world dripping
with advanced calculus that comes as easily to her as swimming does to a dog. I'll never meet Angelica but
she's one hell of a gal.

FlyswatterSomeone I know (no names to be mentioned,) used to whack her kids regularly with a yellow flyswatter to
keep them in line. And once on a flight from Dallas to Austin I witnessed a little Chinese woman hopping up from
her seat every minute or so to lightly slap her 3 school-age daughters on the face and shoulders as nonchalantly as you
or I would switch our crossed legs or pluck lint from the sleeves of our velvet blazers. Sure as I'm sitting here with
a bellyfull of spaghetti and a hankering for dark chocolate, these things I just told you are true.

Yellow Legal PadThere is a yellow legal pad on this desk. It looks like its from either early last November or from
the 1890s. (Probably the latter, it looks like it's been through a gay olde time in Paree.) It's crumpled
like a dog's ear in the wind. I wonder if I threw a bucket of ice water on it would it thank me or be royally pissed?
I wonder what its half-life is? Not long, I suppose, but centuries shorter than the fish bones left over from the meals
of Egyptian pyramid slaves and a chip of eternity shorter than the Pompeiin daisies sealed forever
in ash. That's for sure!

Harry Chapin 2My fifth husband Mel would sometimes belt out loud renditions of W.O.L.D. or Taxi in the strangest
places - like the frozen food aisle in the grocrey store, at bar and bat mitzvahs or in the ordering line at Willie's Burger
Haven. "She said how are you, Harry? And I said, how are you Sue?" would just come flying out in Mel's
big baritone, much to the surprise and sometimes delight of us all. I remember thinking for a fleeting
moment as I watched Mel's casket lowered by those stainless steel rollers onto that green carpet, "You can travel
on 10,000 miles and still stay where you are." Always the littlest details that stick in your head.
