A Frazzle Of MayhemDid I mention my fifth husband Mel used to hang out at Harriet's One-Price Coffee on Wednesdays during
his poetry phase? And did I mention he had curly hair and lips like warm orange slices?
But that's not the real reason I came here with this frazzle of mayhem tonight. I'm here
chasing Amy. Amy with her silver earrings like minature spoon handles and her braids with polkadot bows at
the ends. Amy the dry-cleaning stain-spotter who ran off with my grandmother's yellow chiffon and my blueprints
for eternal fulfilment. If you see her, say hello. (She might be in Tangiers.) Tell her I'm still
waiting for the fiddlers and Spanish guitarists to pop out of my closet at night. And for the cows
to come home. Ah yes, those proverbial cows.

The Dreidel SongCatchy little tune. Kelly learned it at school last week and these past few days I've heard her singing
the following.
1. Silent Dreidel, Holy Dreidel....
2. Grand-Ma Got Run Over By A Dreidel...
3. We Wish you A Merry Dreidel...
4. ... A Dreidel In A Pear Tree...
5. Deck The Halls With - you got it - Boughs Of Dreidels...

The HoursBlame the hours as sun sneaks almost unseen along walls and heirlooms while furnaces and fridges
chug on and off, chair springs groan, skyscraper veins hum, snowflakes lilt into rivers then back
to sky again, and heads press lightly to words in books. The hours - forever sweeping tiny
regrets and idle moments towards the ramparts of gloom. Commandeering birth and death to fight it out with knives
of isolation. Hand-picking the sad and the silent children to grow seed crystals of what-could-have-been into
mountains of age and fogged mystery. The waiting. The dust. The unremembered vim.
Great expectations into nothing. The ultimate implosion into molten lace.

BlessingsSo, we've been a little depressed over not selling any cars in three weeks, what with bills continuing to
sail in and Christmas coming and all, but we felt a bit better last night after gorging on reduced-fat chips and
hot cocoa and reminding ourselves that no one we love has been recently shot dead in church, crashed their
car at the bottom of an isolated ravine, drowned in icy water or been poked repeatedly on the bare buttocks
with a glowing poker. (At least we don't think anyone we love got a hot poker to the
ass lately. We haven't heard any reports.)

Gerbils On HoldK: Mom, I've done my best at Kung Fu for the last three weeks in a row, so now can I get my gerbils?
J: Well, Sweetie, remember I said last night that Daddy's business has been super-slow
for the past two weeks and we can't spend even a penny on extras until we sell some cars.
Slight pause.
K: Okay Mom, but you know that means you're not going to the wine store tonight either.
(From the ever-twirling mind of our six-year-old.)

Focus And Effort
Calling Dad right after class to tell him the great news that she just earned a strip of black tape on
her belt, which means she's been doing great and will soon be tested for her next belt - white with
a yellow stripe in the middle.
WAY TO GO, KELLY!!! SO PROUD OF YOUR EFFORT!
