Update: I think I can do computer from 10:00 to 11:30 p.m. (still get 7 hours sleep,) and surf for a coupla hours during the day — as long as I run 2 to 3 miles 4x weekly and remember to make a conscious effort to suck my abs in 17 times a day.
Now, back to the originally scheduled post…
Can anyone suggest how to get by on a lot less sleep?
Like could I get down to maybe 4-5 hours a night?
‘Cause 11:00 p.m to 2:00 a.m is such prime blogging time.

(My desktop computer corner about 2 years ago, the one day in history said corner was actually tidy.)

Hi Jannie!
Wow, just came over from Chritine Kane’s blog. Meaning to say “imperfect nice-to-meet-you.” The crazy thing is that I am a musician, too, and I lived in Austin, Texas for 10 years until this last winter. Now I’m in St. Paul, MN.
My blog is OurBestVersion.com, but my music is at aries9.com. And finally, I also have arikoinuma.com, on which I presented a business plan to fully integrate my music with blogging and become wildly successful.
Stop by any of them some time and say hello. I shall return, too.

Jannie,
Thanks for stopping by my site.
I love that picture! My daughter started on an electronic keyboard at age 4 (almost 5). She just turned 8 this week and she plays the piano so wonderfully. It’s just a joy listening to her play!

P.S. I love those blogging hours you mentioned too (!) but I know it’s not healthy. I’ve learned from experience that there is no healthy way to get by on that little sleep. I try to force myself to go to bed earlier than 2:00 am but if you examine the timestamps on my blog posts over time, you’ll see that I don’t always succeed! I do believe I’d be healthier if I could get more/better quality sleep, though. With my fibromyalgia, sleep apnea, and pain levels… my sleep cycles (day and night) and quality of sleep can get really messed up.

I only sleep about 4-5 hours a night and I’m completely insane.
I’m sure with hard work and lots of coffee, you can do it too!

Four or five hours is about it for me too
Perhaps not being able to sleep for a decent length of time goes with being creative.
I’ve had some of my best ideas at three o’clock in the morning, though.

If you worked my hours, you’d be getting less sleep than that already… minus the function better part- I’m a grouch at work! You have to modify blogging to between 3-5 am tho- (when I get home)

I love sleep, it’s practically decadent to me. BUT, I do most of my composing either early in the morning or late at night. The exception to this would be the bathtub–I think up lots of poems while soaking in the bubbles, and then i have to scramble out and start writing it down before it slips right out of my tiny pea brain.
My only advice on how to get by with less sleep would be to find a sexy vampire and get him/her to turn you into one of the immortal dead. You would have to give up sunbathing, but you could blog all night!

I don’t sleep either… it was after 4 when I laid down this morning. And no, I don’t know a secret to functioning without sleep – I just force everyone around me to deal with my crappy memory and stumbling
I drink LOTS of coffee, I’d die without it. But it doesn’t actually help lol.
I’m ready for a nap now LOL

Sorry, I have the opposite problem. I have to force myself to go to bed. If not, I’d be up all night! Only other thing I can think of is Elvis’s life plan — pills to stay up — pills to go to sleep. But then again, I’m not thinkin’ that turned out to well for him.

Wait… this picture is supposed to represent a corner that ISN’T tidy?! I’m in trouble.
My kids are both in school, so the solution to my 5-6 hours of sleep problem has been naps. But, I remember my childhood, and I don’t remember my mom napping, so I’m a little worried about myself.
I really am in trouble.

Karyn, let’s both stay on the lookout.
Ari, I like your blog too — very POSITIVE!
Maddy, I’ll have to take a close-up of that, it’s an acrylic sculpture I like to call “the Wave.”
Jeanne, I should know you’d be looking out for my health!
Bee, insanity avoidance was kind of part of my plan.
Michael, the demo button’s my fav too
Rob, are you tired in thte day, tho?
Snag, I could conform to your blogging hours! Maybe that’s the ticket.
Shay, I’ll send out the vampire request. Great idea.
Erin, maybe the best poets don’t need as much sleep?
MamaZen, mainline it, Baby!
Tiffany, my Mom napped when we were all at school, I think. Of course she had to wait 5 years until the last one started attending. She musta been plenty tired by then.
Heff, beer is good!
Kerri, you are sensible. Can I get some of that?

Have you tried Melatonin? It is great, I’d take it an hour before you want to get to sleep… you’ll sleep better and wake up refreshed. Bottom line tho is 4-5 probably isn’t enough… tho Edison got by on less…

Jannie,
Let’s just say that I have learned from personal experience that sleep deprivation can have some dire consequences!! It really took awhile for me to accept this fact!
I used to function on about 4 hours of sleep (give or take) in college. Now I really should get 8-10 hours. With sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, anemia, etc… I need my sleep!!
Plus some of my medications make me drowsy in the daytime… So sometimes daytime naps are just not optional.
Unfortuntely, I feel best (most awake) at night. So I get tempted to stay up late blogging, reading, or watching TV.
Then the next day I’m a zombie.
So I try really hard to force myself to get to sleep by 12:30 or 1:00 am at the latest. There are never enough hours in the day!
It’s a struggle!
Jeanne

Hi Jannie – It’s not great for your health to try to get by on that little sleep. I’ve done it before because i was so busy at work. I used to sleep midnight until four only. Once you get into a pattern – you automatically wake up after four hours sleep.
But it wasn’t good – after a while I began to hallucinate. Margaret Thatcher used to sleep only four hours a night and now she has dementia – that was enough to scare me off trying it again.
On 24 October 2008 at 1:11 pm Jannie said,
Cath, thank you yes.
But isn’t Margaret Thatcher also real old now, that could be part of it perhaps. I have it worked out now , tho. 7 hours. And sleeping in Sundays. So don’t worry!

LOL – I OFTEN think the same thing: if only I could run on less sleep….
And then I try it, pay for it, and go back to 6-7 hrs/night.
And so the dysfunction continues…
