Update on Nov. 6th at 1:53 p.m. Just found a wrapped Tootsie Roll in my extra blanket!!
Don’t let that seemingly innocent-looking face on Sweety the dacshund fool you. Last night I walked into Kelly’s room to find him sniffing in the laundry basket, which usually means he’s retrieving an old pizza crust or a dried-up peanut or some other treasure he’s hidden in case of future starvation, except this pizza crust was making the strange crackling noise of a… Kit Kat bar!
Finally an answer to the candy wrappers mystery. I’d been finding some around the past few days and knew Kelly wasn’t the culprit because she knows that no matter how bad the truth may seem, it’s the only way to go. So it was a canine pumpkin pilferer who stole candy and hid it. Lord only knows where more of his stash could be.
Oh, you should’ve seen his joy when he saw me bring out the pumpkin a few minutes ago. Sorry, no treats for you Sweety-Boy, but please say “cheese” for the photo?

I love that he hides his treats! My dogs just chew them right in front of me and then try to take a finger when I try to take their treat away. I obviously have a couple of little bastards on my hands.

My daucshund mix is also a scavenger, she will literally eat anything she can get her paws on. But she eats all the things she likes right away, and hides what she doesn’t. For some reason, her fav spot is under the dining room table.

hey, this post made me laugh for a couple of reasons. One, i like the way you wrote it. Good sarcastic writing is a gift. Two, it reminds me of my parents dog, Cocoa, he is a black Schnauzer and a little candy demon himself. Actually, Cocoa is a furry vacuum cleaner he will scarf down anything that won’t eat him first.
So you thought my bra story was funny huh?

Awwww… but how could you ever be upset at someone with a face that cute?
Years ago, when my dog was still young enough to jump onto the furniture, I had placed an unopened bag of Hershey’s kisses on my dining room table. And while I was out of the house that night, she jumped onto one of the dining room chairs and ate the ENTIRE bag — little silver foil wrappers and all. THAT was not a fun night…

At least he has good taste in candy bars and that face, how adorable. I know chocolate is supposed to be bad for dogs, but I have caught my dogs getting in to my stash more than once and they are no worse for it – other than maybe a few extra pounds heavier.

Bee: yeah, he’s got a way about him, that’s for sure.
Jim: And there were Snickers and Milky way wrappers around the house too.
Lynn, I agree – the truth is all there is.
Caity: He seemed proud of himself, indeed.
Amber: the thrill of the forbidden fruit I do believe.
Fancy: Yeah, he’s a total gourmand. Love finding those dried peas under my pillow (not.)
Mama Zen: Thanks for popping by with your happy thoughts.
Miladysa: I gave him chicken tonight, but no chocolate.
Tammy: Any story about following a 75-year old strange man through the ladies “delicates” department while he’s flaunting his wife’s used bra around always makes me grin. And I know what you mean about teh vacuum cleaner effect – what a wonderful bonus having dogs around.
Cindy: Thanks, it’s only his cuteness that keeps me from strangling him. Kidding – I love him!
Joy: Seriously? Come and get him! After you and I haunt the poet cafes I’ll let you have him.
Lisa: Foil wrappers and all? Musta been some interesting “leavings”.
Renee: Oh shoot, not the naked pix??? Drat, and I was goignto showcase my fave of you up in that pine tree. Oh well, I’ll survive.
Thomma Lyn: Does the siamese eat chocolate? Our cat won’t even sniff it, is strictly a tuna and potatoes kinda guy.
Erin: Aint’ he the cutest? I do give him a biscuit on Tuesday and lasagne every Saturday at 4:17 p.m.
King: I hear ya, but for me it’s the Ghiardelli dark that I go after. Can smell that yummy stuff from 10,000 paces.
Cricket: The “who me?” look. That’s the one, alright.
Stephanie: Yeah exactly, I’ve heard plenty of warnings that chocolate kills dogs but my 3 that have gorged on it only acted a little extra hyper for a few weeks.

That’s hysterical. Mary – our schnauzer – isn’t a dog who sniffs out food and eats it (thankfully). I great up with basset hounds though and am very familiar with personalities like your little Sweety’s. Great photo!

Love the story! Reminds me of the time my families dog hide Hersey kisses around the house- we’d find wrappers all of the place. Dogs do like to hide thier treats that’s for sure.
And chocolate may not be good for dogs, but the type of chocolate and the size has a lot to do with it. And the dog’s metabolism factors in. Just get some charcol to give the dog incase he eats too much. It would take a lot of kit kat’s.

Pink: I think beagles and dacshunds are very similar in their intelligence and seemingly innocent-looking cuteness.
Csquaredplus3: Same as I said to Pink, and double that for basset hounds, all 3 the houndage variety.
Karyn, yeah it may be the size and type of chocolate / dogs’ metabolism for sure. Believe me, he never gets chocolate from us, but he does like a rib bone, my-oy-my. Oh and will climb up to the table from a chair to pilfer whatever he can so we have to be vigilant.

Dot, I really, really appreciate your comment. I do confess I was exaggerating with my comment about my dogs being hyper for 3 weeks, it was only actually a couple of hours, the one time with Peach who ate half a dark choc bar forgotten on the coffee table. And in retrospect I apologize for being so flip as it is widely reorted how bad chocolate is for dogs, especially after hearing about your emergency and realize how insensitive I may have sounded to those whose dogs were not so lucky.
I will so totally endeavor to keep chocolate very very far away form our dogs, bless their little hearts, I love them so much.

Dot said,
They’re so good at putting on the innocent and cute face, aren’t they.
Dogs love chocolate, but it’s more dangerous than you think. “…my 3 that have gorged on it only acted a little extra hyper for a few weeks.” You were very lucky. Dogs aren’t able to get caffeine and other stimulants in chocolate out of their systems in an hour or two like humans. It takes days. You mentioned it took “a few weeks” for yours! The danger is that being hyper all the time wears out their hearts and they die of heart attacks. We’d never want that to happen to Sweetie or any other pup.
My two little rascals, both with legs less than a foot long somehow got a very large bar of dark chocolate (which has more caffeine) off the kitchen counter and ate half of it. That’s when I realized how hyper one of them was. Emergency vet, being made to vomit a ton of chocolate, then given charcoal, staying overnight for observation, $400 later, they lived.

Danifer: Yes, dacshund’s are little food mongers. With this one I really have to watch he doesn’t steal the shih-tzu’s food. Even if I feed him inside and Peach out he will go out the cat door and try to pilfer Peach’s munchies if he possiblycan.
Ella: We have one of those human candy sneakers too, the treats are now hidden.
Snag: are you saying what I think you are with “other kind of” tootsie roll? Oh boy, would not be pleasant if we are both thinking the same thing.
