That post the other day ended up being quite a hoot, for me anyway. Felt great to finally admit that I’m really a Russian violinist named Boris who has 62 cats and loves to do cartwheels in produce aisles.
One question I really liked, “Why do you blog?” was posed by the ever-elegant Blogger For Hire Vered and part of my answer to her was “to become really really famous and have people ’round the world now and far in the future think I’m wonderful and maybe someday I’ll get a bumper sticker fashioned in my honor that says “Jannie Funster Rocked!” Sure, part of me thinks it’d be cool to be famous but mostly I think it would be better to be this good old unfamous-yet-much-loved Jannie.
I actually think the biggest reason I blog is for the same reason I love to share songs I wrote – to be heard.
And I ask you – why do you blog and / or how did you first get into blogging ?

Really it was just gratitude journaling that happened to be posted on the web. (Why didn’t I just write it in a notebook? Because I write better when typing than handwriting.) It went unread for a long time, but my blog was “outed” when I commented on friend Whitney’s blog “Glimpses of Grace” and my blogger ID was listed. She linked to it and mutual friends saw the link, etc. etc.

As a writer, blogging became another way to creatively express myself. I wasn’t one for myspace or facebook, but blogging was exactly the right outlet.
I enjoy reading blogs. I like the glimpses into other’s lives, their thoughts, their dreams…even their rants. The more blogs I read, the more I discover people are more alike than different which is comforting.
Jannie, I think the bumper sticker should definitely be in the present tense!

I’ve always enjoyed interacting with others on the internet. I was looking to make some money working from home and somebody at iVillage said I should blog, that her sister does it and earns enough for her car payment.
I started blogging in August of this year and soon enough I was being paid to write some “reviews” which were really not reviews, more like being paid a few bucks to write something positive about something you don’t know anything about or care about. After a week or two I couldn’t stomach it anymore so I wrote my “I will be a ho no mo” post. As a stay at home Mom I really enjoyed “having a voice” again, and the social aspect of blogging so I kept at it. Last week Bumkins sent me some stuff to review, but it’s not the same to me since I like and use the stuff anyway and could disclose that they asked me to write the review.
I would have a much better blog if I was able to remain anonymous, much juicier, but I’m not going there.

The truth is, I had grown unhappy with the Lesbian poetry forum I had been posting at, and when I saw that my (also disaffected) friend Cynthia had created a blog using Blogger, I did what any self respecting gal would do and copied her. All I was looking for was a place to attractively display my poetry and hopefully receive a little feedback. (I didn’t get much, those first six months) But blogging has turned into an amazingly rewarding experience.
And I do meet chicks hahahahahaha

I started blogging over 4 years ago, in part, to try to make a bit of supplemental income. That really hasn’t worked well, though I do make a bit each month from other websites.
I continue blogging to share my photography, vintage images that I think others might appreciate, and my occasional commentary. It’s an interest of mine — almost like a hobby — not a job.
Through the reading of other blogs and sharing and commenting, I have interacted with a far more diverse “group” of people than I would have ever had an opportunity to be around locally.
Blogging helps this laid-back old retired fart evolve and grow in a lot of different ways.

Jannie,
I started by finding a particular blog by accident and getting really hooked (reading it daily and commenting a great deal). It all started with that one blog.
Then I contacted the author and she was really encouraging and helpful.
Then I started toying with the idea of writing a blog myself but I was apprehensive because I didn’t know if I’d be able to keep it up with all of my illnesses (and because I knew I’d “get hooked” and have trouble managing my time). I was afraid of burnout (with good reason).
Ultimately, I decided it was the right thing to do for several reasons. First and foremost, I write to help others who are chronically ill (and their loved ones).
Next, it’s therapeutic and distracts me from my pain.
I would be lying if I said it didn’t cross my mind that it would be nice to earn a wee bit of money at some point to ease the burden on my husband with my massive mountain of medical bills. (I had been forewarned by my blogger friend, though, that it would likely be a very long time before that would happen).
Alas, she was right about that last part… as I haven’t made a penny as of yet. Part of that was that I ditched my Google ads due to inappropriate content (got soooo sick of blocking individual ads). It would be nice to help with our crushing debt from my medical bills but I learned the hard way that I am no longer well enough to work in a “traditional” job. (Trust me when I say that I tried going back to work at several jobs and all that did was land me in the hospital and INCREASE our debts).
Would I like to someday be able to make a little bit of money to contribute something/anything to the family bills? Yes.
Do I think my writing/intellectual property is worth something? Yes.
Do I plan to write a book someday? Yes.
Have I wanted to write a book since childhood? Yes.
***
However the overriding, #1, definite main reason I write is to help people.
***
I believe this is what I’m meant to be doing now. I’m 39 years old and sometimes I feel about 90 with all of my illnesses. I try to stay positive and not feel sorry for myself and I’m grateful for what I do have.
I’ve had endometriosis for 26 years and have been slammed since with so many diagnoses… fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis, MCS, IBS, neuropathy… The list goes on…
Anyway, the bottom line is that I believe that writing about my illnesses can help other people. After facilitating a local endo support group (as a volunteer) for 7 years and seeing the impact I could make locally with a small number of people, I thought that blogging would be a way to reach many more people.
I’m no medical expert by any stretch of the imagination. In the school of life, though, I have plenty of lifetime experience with numerous illnesses and I believe I have some support, comfort, and understanding to offer others. I have learned what I know the hard way and it was not fun!
It’s a wonderful opportunity to “meet” blogger friends like you too! If it weren’t for blogging, I wouldn’t know you and that would be a huge loss!

I write for the same number of reasons there are blowflies on roadkill. Just too many to count. There is some recent research pubished in ‘Nature b’y a team who analyzed data from over 3k different blogs and the folk who wrote them. One theory was that bloggers write to emphasise bits of their persona that don’t get noticed in the ‘real’world and in doing so exaggerate some qualities that they have.
Well do I? possibly, but the names are changed to protect the innocent, maam. The blogs I read (many) are just like mine, so are we all guilty of hyperbole? possibly, but one thing I do note, there is no plagiarism (unlike some science papers I read)and most of it is news that is fit to print. So I’ll just keep on blogging and oh, promise not to change my name to Walter Mitty.(ha ha, I had my fingers crossed behind my back!)

Blogging has become like breathing, like the teens and tweens who text mail with their cell phones, working their thumbs into a blur. Why do we do it? First off it is a hell of a lot of fun. It’s like going to a party and meeting up with new folks and having those quirky and sometimes significant conversations that we used to have only a half dozen times a year. It is fellowship and sharing and it verifies and spreads the word.
I am still kind of new to it. Lane Savant, my old high school pal from 50 years ago, invited me to start commenting on his blog, FEEL FREE TO LAUGH, a little over a year ago. My comment were always much longer than his postings. Out of desperation, I suppose, he started a new blogsite, FEEL FREE TO READ, and invited me to co-author it. I was allowed to take it over and now it consumes hours per day. This networking with other bloggers, other poets, pariahs, malcontents, and jokesters has become a very special kick for me; something to look forward to for my retirement. And of course, let us not forget the ego-involvement in sharing our views. 15 years ago desk-top publishing was a new thing, and now cyber-sharing has expanded our consciousness, and our sense of our selves.

Maddy: Welcome back to Jannie land. I must go and enjoy your latest whinging!
Wade: I totally didn’t understand any of that but I loved it completely.
Talon: Thanks again for that bumper sticker review. I feel absolutely famous around you! I’m with you on the Facebook and MySpace, don’t keep at them. Blogging rocks!
Heather: I admire your “ho no mo” philosophy. I think it really saps your energy and soul to write stuff you can’t really believe in. Thanks for sharin’! And you could also have a second blog, juicy and anonymous, ‘cept how would I know to get there?
Tom: I haven’t been reading your blog for long but it looks like you are for sure dishing up some helpful stuff over there.
Shay: I’m glad you blog! Do you think you’ll ever write a poem called “Demons at the Dentist?”
Georgie: I am so grateful for Gumby the Cat. And for Topix. And for Shades of Love. (check’s in the mail, or will be soon!)
Davina: Welcome to Funsterland. I am quite new to your blog too. It will be fun to get to “know” you better. I am thinking of posting every day in January. What do you think of that?
Weyrd1: The audience is listening…. you seem pretty hip to me as well as being a keen observer of the h.c.
Mike: I have been enjoying your posts very much, great photos. Like that latest headlight. LOVE brass!
Guys, my internet seems to be dying, must post this…
Mia: I hope you are finding that your feelings are getting heard? There are so many wonderful wonderful out here in the blogosphere. I know you have a lot on your plate every day – I am amazed you keep up with blogging as you do. But then again, it may just be helping you “keep your sanity right?”
Talon: My fan! ha, ha.
Debbie: Hey, I have those voices too! And lots other ones, none of them telling me to cleans the house, tho.
Thomma Lynn: You got it going on, Girl! A novella. Do you get writing ideas when you are out in the woods?
Vered: My family and friends think my blog sucks – just kidding.
Jeanne: Your post touched me deeply. In the face of all your troubles you still try to be happy and thankful for what you do have and I hope that inspires others as much as it does me. I am so happy to hear you will be writing a book! What do you think it will be called? Will it be about your personal journey? Dittoes on meeting you too, Jeanne! It’s been MY great gain. Thank you for all you do to help others. Oh and Jeanne – if I can make $1.69 a week in Google ads so can you!!!!! Just write about bras a lot. Write about flinging them.
Fancy: It is fun, isn’t it??? And right – all done from the comfort and privacy of your own home.
Walter Mitty: I guess we all know the plagarizing would soon be found out? Not that I want to plagarize. (SORRY – I cannot spell plagiraize, never have been able to. Can’t spell definetely either. Or fortunately.) Wait, was that last one correct? Maybe we all get to expound on the creative wirtings our teachers never had enough time to let us read aloud or work on in math class?
Glenn: Feel Free to Laugh, Feel Free to Read. I guessed y’all were quirky buds. Do other of your friends also have blogs called Feel Free to sing, dance, whistle, chug beer, fling socks (and other items of apparel?)
Lane: I like your coffe and pie blog! And I’m going to write streamingly like you when I grow up.

hmmm… I started blogging as a way to vent – I hid my blog for the first year-ish I guess. Then I outed myself by accident, and switched over to using my blog for my poetry. People liked it, enough to keep coming back, which was an ego boost. Then I went through a really hard time in my life, and blogged to share my story with my loyal readers, becuase they wanted to know how things were going. Found out they didn’t just lik my poetry, they liked ME, wow!
Then I stopped blogging because I stopped writing poetry, and my difficult situation was “over” so to speak, and I didn’t feel like I had anything left to say.
I probably don’t actually have anything to say even now. The click clack of the keyboard is therapeutic though. And my 4 remaining readers would miss me if I quit

“The Musical” page with my “Songs I Wrote” page and put up a separate Blog Awards page! oy vey, another thing on my Bloggin’ List! Thank you. Your blog is in my heart too.
Barbara: Yours is a very valuable jam-packed (SOB!)with good info blog. I need to dip into your old blog if it’s available and see what it was about. I wonder when you first started blogging with your old blog? And your name “Blogging Without A Blog,” always makes me smile cause yes, it is a blog, so is it really “without a blog”? Or maybe it was at the start.
Heff: Yeah zero self-indulgence here too! xo
Rhett: Really? You think I did good with the Paint? I limp along with it. Maybe someday I’ll Photoshop. And You tube. And bla, bla. And bla, bla. Until then, (and beyonnd,) I sure appreciate you coming her so much!! Thank you!
Amber: I totally relate to the looking for advice thing. In fact, I have a few burning major questions stored up. So watch out! And please give me your gut opinion when I hit you guys with the doozies, thanks.
Heather (ho-no-mo): I think you are real special! And I’ve “known” you, what — two weeks? You really listen, you cut to the heart of matters I would never have considered. And I really look forward to you visiting here!
Karyn: That is funny to me — deleting your old entries. To me that says total lack of ego on you. I like your nature photos best. You are quite an enigma to me, a wonderful loyal enigma. I never know what you’ll post next. And it’s a real joy. Thanks!
Tammy: Whom I love and is so lousy at putting in your URL in the comment box. Stop it! All the gushing I mean. But keep it coming! Can you imagine how dangerous I’ll be once I get SEO and shit on here. Man! Tammy, if I never broadened my circle of blogging buddies I could be no more happy than I am now with the fine fine friends I have here. Thank you.
Lance: We’ve been doing the Gratitude Dance here today! The next-door-neighbor teen didn’t quite get it as she’s all cheer-leadery-perfect and stuff but me and Kell, we got it just fine!
Erin: You blog is very specieal to me and I can’t believe you keep coming back to mine. I just get such a kick out of you ’cause you have this cut-your-heart-open-with-a-rose-petal poetry and then posts venting your frustrations with the drunken neighbors peppered with tons of F-words! I LOVE THAT!!! I wish I had the balls to keep it so real. And you are all about helping others. I am humbled and glad you would call me friend.
Jewel / Pink: Sounds like the mark of a true writer for you to stick with it. I think your blog is great! You are certainly a very dynamic and thoughtful person and I look forward to getting to know you better and better.
Stacey: I am sooo going to be sticking with you because I am All About Balance. For example, if I don’t do the exact same amount of leg lifts on each side it can really wreck my day, maybe even my week!
Tammy: In the words of whoever it was wrote “My Funny Valentine,” you so make me smile with my heart. You remind me so much of myself it’s scary. “was that pessimistic”
(You even went blonder too, eh?
I think many of us are listing to you. Really listening. For you are special.
Patricia: Ain’t it a lovely bumper sticker? Not being left behind, what a lovely sentiment. I can very much relate to that. And having a sense of belonging, I think. I’m so glad I “met” you!! Have you met my freind, Jae? She is a true gem too.

Real Julie: Welcome back! I’ve missed you. That’s a pretty cool reason to start blogging. Being aware of every moment in life, waht a wonderful thought.
