Me: Do I hear Sponge Bob down there again? What did I tell you this afternoon about watching more t.v.?
She: But this is a full movie of him, Mom, one I never saw before and I really really really want to watch it. Pleeeeease??
Me: Hmnnn… But your dad might want to watch t.v. tonight.
She: No! He already said its okay.
Me: But what about your brain? What’s Going To Happen To YOUR BRAIN from watching more t.v.?
She: One plus one is two! Two plus two is four! Three plus three is six!
Me: Okay, what’s… seventeen plus five?
She: (after two seconds) Twenty-two!
Me: Yeah. But how did you arrive at that number?
She: Well, I already know seven plus five is twelve so ten more is obviously twenty-two, Mom.
Me: Okay, go watch.

Wondering: If you have kids, what’s your t.v. policy for them? And if you don’t have kids, what’s your t.v. policy for you?
P.S. I’m as big a Sponge Bob fan as anyone and someday I might even put up an MP3 here of me doing Patrick’s voice. (Or not, and say I did.) Uncannily similar on occasion, that starfish’s voice and mine.
Oh, and guys, speaking of MP3s, I just put up 5 more song snippets on my “Songs I Wrote” page! (I’m so totally getting my sheets together. Kind of. Baby step by baby step.)

I have three sons and the television watching policy has become looser with each child. (It’s true what they say about the first child…) We limit the amount of t.v. they watch and are VERY strict about content, EXCEPT for the 3-year old. He’s watching things at 3, that we didn’t let the 9 and 11 year old boys watch until they were quite a bit older. Like… Sponge Bob.

We watch a lot of Sprout TV, fun for the 1 year old, and 2 year old grandsons. I have another TV in the basement where I watch all the trash TV I taped from various series, or one of the 12,000 movies that adorn all the walls and cover the floor space on wheeled shelves. That is a classic exchange between you and Kelly; hard to tell who got their way, enit?
I need to find some time to listen to your mp3’s. Have you listened to Doug’s on FFTL?

TV policy at our house? They actually monitor their own useage very well (they are 14,16,18) The 18 yr old works alot, so not much tv., the other two get sick of sitting around too long and will take a walk or go on the trampoline.
I happen to think tv is educational (most tv), and that video games help develop great hand eye coordination…so I may not be a ‘normal’ person to give a response. lol Oh, plus tv is a great outlet to take their minds off the everyday crap they deal with at school and such. I’d put one in her room. lol

Looking forward to a traveling production of it, much like Tuna, Texas plays. You have a terrific twang and lilt in your voice. Can you sing jazz, blues, or ballads as well? Nice piano tinkling too.

Lovely picture! Sponge Bob sort of freaks me out.
When I first had Joe I freaked out at the thought of him laying his baby eyes on the television. I would make my husband keep him turned away from it when he held him. I’ve lightened up a bit, and Joe Joe is now Barney’s biggest fan. I’ve learned that I have to be really careful, though. Joe cried when watching the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special. He cried when Snoopy cried.

Great picture.
Our “policy” is a little different. We’re a TV family (in the background). But, it’s usually our TV (so long as it’s not something they can’t watch). Our biggest little guy kinda ‘needs’ tv. Sounds crazy, but it helps. Our daughter could care less about TV so right now, I don’t have to worry about that right now. Our youngest, same thing. So, I’m sure our policy will change as they get older. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t have it on 24/7 and we do pay attention to how much he’s watching, but we don’t have a in-stone policy… it just wouldn’t work for us.
I know, shame on me!

My little guy is doesn’t watch much TV, but neither do we. However, I think a half hour a day is reasonable or 1 to 2 hours for a special occasion like a movie, but I’m sure it is like most parenting issues – it depends on the child in question.
I think the important part is teaching kids about media literacy; watching programs with them to see what their level of understanding is, and to teach them to have some objectivity about the programs they view.
There are some really wonderful programs on TV that can give parents starting points for conversations about topics that might never have surfaced otherwise. TV also allows us to explore aspects of the world that aren’t accessible to all of us – kid’s travel programs or programs about exotic animals for instance. I think that as long as kids are positively engaging with the program on some level then it can be a healthy, fulfilling addition to day-to-day life. My two cents

Oh my sweet Jannie! I have missed you too! I just finished my MBA and Monday was my last day so I can’t wait to drink my last brain cell away since I won’t need it anymore, which leads to my t.v. policy….
I am trying to dumb my son down because he passed me intelligence a while back… I figure that is like being upside down on your mortgage… so I encourage E television, anything with Paris Hilton in it, or any VH1 reality show to even the score and stunt his emotional, pyschological, and intellectual development. On the flip side, I’m wishing my hubby were as smart as me so he is forbidden to do anything but read encyclopedias and play Sudoku…

The only T.V. policy we have ever had was for me. The policy is to berate me when I am watching T.V. and anyone else is doing something worthwhile. My daughter hardly watched T.V. at all until she got hooked on America’s Top Model, that show is toxic. It is on 24 hours a day on various channels. But now that she is awy at college the only rule is that I can’t get caught watching Seinfeld reruns and repeating the lines along wih the characters.

CSq2+3: That reminds me of the mom who had 4 kids. With the 1st she sterilized the baby bottles for 45 mins in boiling water, with the 2nd she used the top rack of the dishwasher, for the 3rd, a good old sink of soap and water and by the time the 4th came along she figured a quick rinse would do just fine. And they all survived!
Glenn: Sprout t.v. is a new term for me. I think it was for sure Kelly who got her way in that exchange. 12,000 movies — that’s the largest personal collection I’ve ever heard of. Does Blockbuster even have that many? FFTL I am not familiar with – guessing I’d say that means Far Fetched Tuneage League?
Sheila: Your kids sound pretty cool, mature. “SpongeBob you have to understand, Gary’s with me now.”
Thomma: Thanks, I almost didn’t write I Need A Man ‘cuase I thought it was the stupidest song ever, you just never know do you. I have an entry level recording system for my home demos, you can actually go pretty inexpensively these days… computer, recording software, hardware interface, microphone and cord. Simple. A little know-how comes in handy too but that can be aquired as you go.
Heather: Before Kelly was born I swore she wouldn’t see t.v. until she was 4 or 5, but by 13 months she was the world’s biggest Dora The Horror fan.
Tammy: That’s lucky for all those kids. Kelly’s got lots of great little girl friends but they don’t live really close, except one. I limit her to an hour a day on school days and two on the weekends, which is probably twice as much as I should be letting her watch. I’M A BAD BAD MOM!!! I personally haven’t watched t.v. in 6 weeks. And I do not miss it.
Tammy: Oh thanks on your second comment!
Jeff: I would be happy to look at your site. I am not sure yet if I am going to have a blogroll as such or not. But if I like your site I will certainly read and comment.
Mia: I think it’s good to know what’s best for your family. I think we tend to worry too much about everything, if we’re doing it right or not. But a better sign to worry a bit than to not worry at all, I think!
Aimee: You are wiser than beyond my years. All great points and watching it with them is a great idea. Kelly said to me this afternoon when I had a foot on the escalator step she was on “Haven’t you ever heard of personal space, Mom?” Something she had picked up from t.v.
Renee: Congrats on your MBA!!! And you’re back here with a vengeance with your wit and charm. I love those VH1 reality things, at least I did when I watched them. Missed you!
Caity: That is a great t.v. plan for sure. Kelly’s had homework a few times and that was the foot we put down too.
Wade: And did they talk all the way through your t.v. watching?

Yes Karyn: You HAVE to listen.
I think you’ve got a good take on t.v. and kids, some can handle more with no ill effects.

Carla: One hour a week. Commendable. I freaking love movies. But I still owe Blockbuster $36.00 for keeping two new ones out 3 weeks late (whoopsie,)so I have to settle that before I show my face back in there. But maybe I’ll get a clerk who might take the 2 DVDs back and forgive me my rental sins. By golly, maybe I’ll try that tommmorow! You never know until you try!
Weyrd1: I have certainly gone through periods in life where I was t.v. addicted. General Hospital. Joan Rivers. Sally Jesse. Donahue. Maury Povitch. Wow, that musta been 15 years ago.
Dr C: Can I be you when I grow up?
Momisodes: I feel like rushing right down there now and whipping on a Lifetime movie. But I shall drink a glass of water and go to bed. It is 11:36 p.m. And I want to wake up well rested eo skip down the road to teh coffeeshop whistling “Yankee-Doodle” or “When The Saints Come Marching in.”

When my three were small ones, they didn’t watch much television. We lived in the country and there was only 2 local stations available (we had no fancy satellite dish and cable wasn’t available)…the type of stations that still played “Leave it to Beaver” in perpetual reruns and went off the air at midnight. My three never got in a television habit. Were I raising them now, I would definitely have time limits. I think it’s more difficult these days – too many enticing gadgets competing for their attention. I was always a big believer in shoving them outside (I did it gently and lovingly, of course – lol)…I so rarely see kids playing outside anymore and it makes me sad.

Lance: I think it’s commendable that you have your kids so much into sports. The more I learn of you I can tell you’re a hell of a guy. Wedgie Wedding, thank you.: )
Dee: I am so glad you could drop by Funsterland. Welcome! Kelly is a great reader but I have to really fight her to sit and do it independantly. I am wondering if kids are all just wired differently, or what??
Georgie: I know I’ve seen Hall Monitor but I forget how it goes. One of my favs is the party SpongeBob had planned, every activity set in writing, down to the minute, lol. Still he’s a good egg with usually a great attitude. The creativity that goes into that show just blows me away.
Mama Zen: I believe you have just echoed my t.v./ mothering quandary sentiments. It’s really work to limit their time. I did real good today tho, after Kung Fu we stayed out being busy around town. Even on playdates she wants to watch shows and I’m like, NO!! PLAY!! Interact!
Kath: Yeah, that passive watching does a little something to the brain that is not a desirable effect. But it’s never too late to turn over a new leaf.
Riled up?: You bet!!
Glenn: Cool tip, thanks.
Stacey: They are good little negotiators, aren’t they? One of our local private shcools stipulates No scressns of any kind from Sunday to Thursday and only 30 mins of t.v. on Friday and Saturday. Kelly does not go to that school but I think they have the right idea.
Budda: Welcome and thank you for taking the time to visit my blog. Kelly just recently started watching iCarly and my husband and I are watching it too. It’s funny! And nice and clean humor. I haven’t seen Hannah Montana yet. Hopefully we can make our kids understand the depiction of the teachers as boobs is for humor only.
Stephanie, I think after a certain age our brains are non-rottable so you are most likely good to go. : )
Talon: Coming from simllar circumtances, 2 stations (CBC CTV,) no cable, no dish, we never got in a t.v. habit either. I do remember the Brady Bunch tho, we watched that as much as we could. Yes today – in my life anyway, we plan and supervise playdates. No running around outside all day. Kelly is not even allowed out in out front yard alone. And computers when they are teens will for sure be a big question. Kelly does spend a lot of time playing on her piano keyboard so I hope that will be her creative anchor someay. Or guitar. And of course we’re not letting her quit Kung Fu until she reaches her first black belt or is 18. Take care.

For myself, I try not to watch too much TV. This past week I’ve only watched 2 shows (The Simpsons and half of The Secret Millionaire) which is a lot better than the average American who watches 4 and a half hours of TV a day!
If I had kids I wouldn’t impose a TV policy on them. I think doing so says to them that we don’t trust them, and makes them not trust themselves. If we control every aspect of their lives, they’re not going to be able to control them themselves when they’re off to college because they won’t have had any practice. I believe this is why so many college students go binge drinking, have unprotected sex, miss classes, etc… because when they were back at home their parents controlled every aspect of their lives so they never got the hang of acting responsibly themselves. Ignoring whether or not one person has the right to control another person, I think communicating to your kids that they are untrustworthy or irresponsible will become a self-fulfilling prophecy, and let’s face it, watching too much TV isn’t the worst thing a person could do.

Hey Wesley: Sorry ’bout your site and computer problems. I’m sure you’ll get it figured out. Your comment was very thought-provoking to me, the whole idea of “controlling kids so they never get the hang of acting responsibly themselves” was an aspect I hadn’t considered in this post. Tho I certainly agree with letting children find their way as much as possible within prepared environments, I believe that t.v. tends to deprive children (the younger ones, anyway,) of the important learning tool of asking questions. Plus there are the whole elements of anti-social aspect, one-way language, encouragement of “deceptive thinking,” stifling imagination and creative play and obviously, t.v. discourages physical activity. Also it can become phychologically addictive. That’s why we parents struggle with it as the idea a baby-sitter, which I’ve certainly been guilty of at times. Thus, limits have to be set, which actually helps the child create limits for himself in life too. When one is older I think more t.v. is okay, as long as one is living a happy and productive life, and by productive I mean, contrubuting to the world in their own special way. Thanks Wesley. I’ll be checking in on you.
