Twinkle Shooters

Family, Poetry | Posted by Jannie on 27 January 2009 @ 10:53 PM 35 Comments

Child, it wasn’t our fault we
were born the wild ones, with
twinkles shooting from us like
quills from porcupines (okay,
quill shooting’s a myth,) but I
swear one day we’ll fly to Cork
and find out who instigated
all this Irish jigging on frozen
harbors and lace bra flinging
into pines and naked maples.
Bet some little old guy leaning
on his cane with extra love in
his blue eye was responsible,
his missus of apple pies and
chicken stew no slouch herself.
So Child, some day when I am
long gone to the angels, when
you’re the light in any gloom,
the niblet of fun among sour
patch grapes, the one bursting
into song or bagpipe tunes for
no visible reason – shoot on,
my little twinkler, shoot on and
know that I’ll be twinkling too.
(How I got that twinkle effect was by shooting her in front of a Christmas tree through a pair of kids “rainbow” glasses, in case you were wondering.  Nothing too mysterious, alas.)

Twinkle shooting is a good pastime.

I remember when I was younger, my sister and eye would hold our crystals to lights or we would squint our eyes until our grandmother’s chandelier would look like shards of light, dancing with the room playful and brilliant.

There’s always something neat about twinkly things, from starlight starbright, to Light Bright, to icicle lights, to Christmas lights, to Vegas lights. Twinkly things are my best fodder for my best day dreams.

I never mixed twinkly things with laced bras and naked maples, but it’s all good.

I found out losta cool stuff like playing with prism rainbows on the walls n shadow puppeteering-
Never mind all the shows that were put on for the video cam when the kids were young-

That stuff can be fun n cool!
Your poem is nifty as well-

Jannie: good on you for laying this lovely bit of both whimsey and heart on us. It is humorous, yet touching, laced with blarney, rife with bras, and still an emotional appeal to a daughter who shall become the mirror held up to her mama. It set my morning in order, and ran my grumpy grumps off. I have to go to the dentist today, and now I just have no fear. I will squint my eyes and make my own twinkle shooters. /the niblet of fun among sour patch grapes/ now that is something to look forward to, Miss Kelly. And I do love the line /irish jigging on frozen harbors/. I guess you’re a poet, and now you know it, enit?

J.D. You’re kind of funny I’m realizing as you leave more comments here. Yes twinkle shooting might catch on some day with young and old alike. We are attracted to it like nothing else. I myself am pretty partial to sunlight or moonlight on snow and dancing water.

Snag: Youa re so right about not selling kids things short. I know this guy hwo recorded some songs with a kid’s teeny metal xylephone (sorry, spelling,) and it sounded ace. Lucky your kids to have video of the shows, you good mama you.

Ah Lance, what lovely words. Thanks! Hard to stop being me so I’ll just have to keep rolling with it.

Shay: I always tinking of ewe, ewe knows dat dosn’t ewe??

Thanks Csquared: I actually cropped the photo, I may put up the original one day, it includes Santa off to the right.

Belle: That’s so nice of you. Thanks! I did edit in one whole line since you’ve read it. Old editing me.

Glenn: Funny thing is the jigging, actually Square-dancing as I now recall, did indeed happen one winter as we were crossing the ice road to Miscou Island. (There is now a bridge, I believe,) 25 years ago I’d say. About 15 of us in my Undle Don’s van, pulled over stopped for a break mid-way to get out and enjoy teh beauty of the day. Uncle Don had on some Irish music and we all got out and danced, got quite a few admiring horn honks from passersby for that.

Sheila: I guess you can always try next year. It was actually Kelly’s idea. Glad she suggested it. She had gotten the glasses from Mrs. Claus after she had sat on Santa’s knee.

Aimee: Any one of can be a light in any gloom if we really want to, I guess. ? :)

Dot: Thanks! Wait until you read my “Sofa Buttocks” poem coming to a site near you in the next couple weeks.

You encourage your readers to move beyond the basic reference to “twinkle twinkle little star.” Many more things twinkle to draw our attention to meaningful expeirences and pending revelations. This poem is inspirational.

Hey Jannie- you are a mysterious lady. I like your poem here. I have been a little absent from blogland except for asking everyone to pray for David.

I am up to my eyeballs in papers, exams and so forth. It is now 10:30pm. I started studying (for a psyche exam next week) at 2:30pm. 8 freakin hours and I am worn out.

Anyway, don’t be too hurt over my absentee self if I am quiet now you know why.

Oh, and David is one of my clients. I work for a non-profit agency that cares for handi-cap adults. I love David he is such a rascal. Some of my really old blogs were info on him. So, I thought I would fill in a gap or two for ya.

Catch you on the flip side. I am about to hit the books again.

Cricket: PLEASE DON’T WORRY ABOUT ME!!! I am going to be so prepared and happy during the show, even in just the last week since booking my gig I have begun to feel stronger and more joyous with each guitar practice. Today I actually spent 2 whole hours of good Intentioned practice and have never felt better about my music and my ability to perform well. I do have quite a bit of stage experience too. Plus, it’s going to be all friends in the audience. (Well, hopefuly no enemies or weridoes, hee hee.)Anyway, just don’t want you to worry. But it was kind of funny you had it on your mind, lol. xo

Thanks, Debbie! Always a joy to see you here.

Nikki: I was kind of a bubble-burster there, wasn’t I? Sawwy. You forgib mee?

Liara: You always have a very interesting take on things. Thanks you for being you – as if you have a choice!

Tammy: As long as I know I’ll see you around here when you can, that’ll keep a smile in my heart! And oh yeah, I’m as mysterious as an apple growing on a tree (whatever that means.) Meaning to say – I’m not really mysterious at all. At least I don’t feel mysterious. But hey – maybe I am, am I??

Renee: Yeah what’s up with me making people cry? I didn’t even plan the last part, it just popped out. It’s funny, I always wanted to be a poet when I was much younger, guess I just had to let things settle in a bit. Motherhood has brought my heart and mind full circle, I guess. Kelly – yes she does look quite a bit like me, moreso as she has gotten older. Quite a mix of both Jim and me — her eyes, nose and profile are his. I plan to have her or hubby take a pic. of me in the next couple of weeks for a post about my North Carolina sweatshirt so you’ll get a greater gander at me in all my glory soon.

Karyn: I would say a specialty toy or novelty shop would have them. They shouldn’t cost more than a couple of bucks Just found a link… http://www.rainbowsymphonystore.com/3dfirglas.html

    Kids do love ‘em!

VeRonda: So great to see you back here again! And thanks for those wonderful words.

Talon: Yesh, it came out pretty cool, didn’t it? My heart kind of rolled its eyes as she asked me to do it, as I thought it wouldn’t work. But boy did I have to eat my own negative inner thoughts on that one. I was actually looking through other photos for one to go with this, thre was one of her dancing with a jazz trio, then I stumbled upon this one and… well… :)

Teahouse! You’re back, yay! I must get over to your blog. And thanks so much for your kind words.

Robbi! Now, who’s the Funster around here??? Are you aiming to take over my “job”? ;) Oh — job — that reminds me! Gotta check and see if I’ve raked in any Adsense dough in the past month. Last I checked I had a massive $79.00 in my account. IT COULD BE ALL THE WAY UP TO $89 now!!

Blueberry: Yeah, it came out not too awfully bad I guess. Space alien faces? I have not seen those. But I can imagine and think they would be a hoot.
