Taking Blog Stock

Blogging | Posted by Jannie on 29 January 2009 @ 11:31 AM 59 Comments

Have you noticed I’ve been posting to my blog every other day lately?  Do you think that’s too often?
Have you also noticed since I started hunkering down with my gee-tar a couple hours a day,  I’ve been visiting y’all’s blogs a bit less?  And how are you with that?  How would you feel if I only got to your blog and commented once or twice a week?
And for purposes of me taking blog stock would you classify my blog as “all about me?”  Barbara Swafford over at her very successful site, Blogging Without A Blog, in a recent post called How To Lose Blog Visitors, talks about selfish blogs that are ”all about me” and I’m wondering if I come across like that.  And believe me – I can take honest constructive criticism!  (I’m weird that way, well, I’m weird in many ways - as you all know.)
Is there anything you would like to see me post more (or less,) about?
And just a tad unrelatedly, now that my favorite old sweat pants have a big rip in the left buttock area, should I patch them up?   Or cremate them, followed by a fitting memorial service?
(Yes, that’s my actual gee-tar up there on our actual sofa that miraculously escaped the bunny-munching, unlike its matching loveseat and chair.)

Blogs are so personal. Your content is driven by why you’re blogging in the first place. That’s your call, not ours. If you’re only blogging to make money, I would identify the demographic you’re attempting to entertain or entice to your blog.

I personally can’t keep up with bloggers who blog daily and/or have regular, lengthy posts. For me it’s more like grabbing a piece of bubble gum, or a few M&Ms. I recognize a few people are in a life space where they can put significant time into their posts, and spend hours reading other blogs. I’m not one of those people. Although there are a few literary blogs that I look forward to reading – regardless of the post length. Such talent in many blogs!

I post every 2-3 days, and I try to keep my posts “consumable”.

I also think blogs are generally a bit narcissistic, some more than others. If there’s too much “self-luv” going on, it’s unattractive and shameless. Not good.

I think you’re handling your blog just fine. I really do. :)

Oh, and go for some new sweatpants. You deserve it!

Sheila: Ahh, thanks. I doubt it would ever get to 2 weeks. I do follow about 80 blogs now and I don’t want to hurt anyones’ feelings because each of you is special in your own way to me. I swear I’ll stop at 100 blogs. Or 125. Well, 150 blogs and that’s it! :)

Ella: This is true, thanks for the reminder. This is not a blog all about my mother. Or about my great Uncle Sylvester in Winnipeg. Or How To Win At Tic-Tac-Toe Every Time (which I do know how to do and Kelly knows now too.)

Chris: Great insight, thanks. And I do give myself persmission to get some razzle-dazzle new sweats, maybe go crazy and get a matching top too, whee-hoo!

    Hi Jannie,

Although a lot of blogs are about the author and their experiences, the “all about me” goes on to say, “…but when a blogger is always taking and/or asking others for help and never giving back, they’ll soon be labeled as being self centered. Remember, we get what we give.”

THAT is certainly not what you do. Obviously you’re a caring and giving person who shows support for others.

I love your blog just the way it is.

Your blog is doing well. Posting every other day is fine (as you know, I do that myself). Probably could do with a tad more items about other things in your life (family, maybe your experiences with the music industry would make a good topic to explore)

As for visiting and commenting, there’s not much of a difference in my view. Personally, I try to visit all my bookmarked blogs at least once a week, and try to comment at least once a week on them.

I do agree with Barbara’s points if you don’t update your blog (I had visited a few that stopped updating in November/December) or respond to comments left (I hate that as well) you can lose your readers.

But sometimes, the blog world has to take a back seat to the real world.

Whatever you feel comfortable with in the long run, that’s what you should do.

All I can suggest is be consistent in whatever you choose to do.

Hi Jannie – I’m glad the clarification helped. I wasn’t saying we shouldn’t blog about “us”, what I was saying is if a blogger is constantly asking others for help, Stumbles, Diggs, Tweets, etc on their posts, but doesn’t reciprocate, pretty soon we get to feeling used (and they end up being labeled as selfish).

Hope this helps. Sounds like I need to add a clarification on my blog as well.

You should post as often as you like. As for talking about yourself, I don’t see it as a problem. This is a personal blog, after all. The only reason I don’t talk more about myself on my blog is that I’m an introvert and prefer not to share too much.

I think you’ll find that if you comment less often on other blogs, you’ll get less comments on your blog. It’s how things work in the blogosphere and I’ve come to accept it as part of the game.

Bottom line: your blog – your rules – do as you wish!

Jannie – I agree – patch the pants. And the reason I have a link to your blog on mine is because of the infectious humor of it. Please don’t change a thing!

I had a discussion about this subject with my friend Leisa last night at dinner. One of my clients, who is also a friend now, rolls her eyes every time I mention my blog, saying that she thinks bloggers are too “self-absorbed.” (And she doesn’t read anyone’s blog.) So I asked Leisa if she thinks I am being self-absorbed by posting items that happen to me. Her response, “No! I like to read it! Don’t change it.”

When I started blogging two years ago, I was aware that no one knew the blog was there and it didn’t matter to me. I was in a not-happy-at-all work situation and only wanted to journal about things that give me pleasure – inspired by “Three Beautiful Things,” Clare Grant’s gratitude movement. Then I posted a comment on my friend Whitney’s “Glimpses of Grace” blog using my Blogger ID, and she then put a link to my blog on hers. So that is how a few friends found it originally. It is like a little hobby now – keeping an eye out for Good Things every day.

I appreciate your visits, but think it is great you are working on your music so much. Just grab a cup of coffee and come by when you can. :)

Barbara: I see what you’re saying about the Stumbles, Tweets and Diggs, I haven’t used those yet so was not aware of how people could mis-manageg those, thus turn things into an all-about-me situation.

Blogging certainly is not rocket science, although some are. Your site is fun, fun, fun, to the millionith power, young lady. 80 sites, my God, I have to work hard at reading and commenting on 7 of them. I guess everyone sets up a blog for different reasons, the socialization is cool. My site is all about me, but lacks the humor and personal touch. It is more literary. I post those poems and lyrics and prose that interest me, spiced up by my own views, prose, and poetry here and there. I love searching for just the right jpg to cap the postings. But I have found that the most active blogs are precisely those where someone does share themselves on it, creating a kind of cyber family, a clubhouse where all are welcome. Yes, I, like all the others miss you when you do not drop in with your off the wall comments. Your CD party is almost here, and so you keep practicing that guitar, and yodeling, and howling, and laughing. If ripped jeans can be a fashion, why not ripped sweat pants. Wear Spider Man or Sponge Bob underwear, or Bugs Bunny, or Wonder Woman. Then Kelly will bring her friends over just to scope out your butt.

Your blog is your blog and I love coming here and having a visit, laughing and learning something new – and you get such good comments. For an intense person this is a spot to just enjoy, a moment to be friends.
All of life starts with me first….
I was happy to see that while my internet was down and erratic you did not post as much and were playing your guitar..and that pesky uke…felt like I did not miss too much and I could find the time to go back and see what I missed.
    Thank you
I am actually using the Essene scriptural lectionary or book of days to write my posts too…I am interpreting them by putting pieces of my life into each post as an example…each post can stand on it’s own, but if you read them all you will see that I am interpreting their words on how to make peace not war….so my writing is all about me and my interpretation/experience.
My posts take me about 3 days to research, outline, draft, edit and then drop down to 500 words or so….
I am sure there are lots of folks who would judge what I am doing…but it is right for me…
Are you wearing the sweat pants on stage – if so get funny undies! If not get a new pair and break them in – you might end up on Vered’s blog about sweat pants with rips in them and women’s over use of them in their wardrobe?
Well, then again that might be fun!

I think we read other blogs to read about other people. It’s only fair that they talk about themselves. That’s how, in a strange way, we feel less alone in life. Less alone in our struggles; sometimes even our best friends don’t tell us things that our blogging buddies do…that’s the nature of blogging. So, of course I want to hear about you.

Personally, I’ll miss your comments coming as quickly as they do. I truly, truly enjoy your comments, looking forward to the smile they put on my face. BUT, real life happens, priorities are what they are…I’ll wait for ya!

I think there comes a point for every blogger when they just can’t keep up the initial pace. Summer of ‘07 my Puter broke n I had to condense all online activity to a few minutes once per week on someone else’s dime. While I was involuntarily out of it- some blog buddies went awol, n some stopped blogging altogether.
Ya have to go with the ebb n flow, or make your own.
The give n take does keep us coming back for more, for sure. Ya can’t help that life off line interferes with keeping up sometimes!
Those who care n can, always come back to check, even if they stop commenting-

Ryan: THANK YOU so much for popping over here! A new visitor out of the blue, how wonderful. I adore K’s blog and will no doubt find interesting thought on yours too.

Robin: I guess we are blessed with so many blog friends. The pants… may be patched to last one more year, but when it’s time to let them go to a better place, I’ll let you all know. :)

Mia: I just love getting over to hear you rnews todl with such humor and grace. I wish I could visit all my buddies every post as they posted. But alas, I will just have to do the best I can.

Snag: Wow, “some buddies stopped blogging altogether.” They must’ve really depended on you. Ebb n flow, yes, the great tides of love and life, I shall aim to be carried with ease upon their frothy caps.

Miles: Hammocks, yes. I think I could post about my grand-mother’s slatted hammock which was almost hidden from view under the weeping willow. Write about the night I lay there undetected as I witnessed illicit familial activities.

Lance: “Comes out to play,” yes. that’s me! I’ll bring my guitar. You bring your ball and bat. :)

I have been wondering the same thing about my blog – the “all about me” point. The recent s.h.i.t-storm that is currently my life has conquered my brain and left me with little else to blogs about. I also wonder if people think I’m trying to incite sympathy with “woe is me” stories. I think, and I’m hoping, that people that enjoy my blog put up with my doses of un-fun reality.

As far as your blog is concerned, I enjoy getting to know you as a person through your blog. I believe that can be done with any kind of post.
    Your blog just rocks…always!

*my blog may not be all about me, but this comment sure is! Hope you don’t mind ;)

I like your blog as is. The best things about blogs are how individual they are. I don’t come back to ones I find boring.
And if you can only visit my blog once in a blue moon, that is ok with me. What matters most is the mere fact you come. That’s the way it is with friends- you don’t need to see them every day, but when you do see them you say hi. (^-^)

What the flying frick? You’re taking advice from another blogger on how to blog your blog? Isn’t that like taking advice from another Jannie Funster on how to be Jannie Funster? Oops, there is no other Jannie Funster! Get the point?

Your blog is just your blog. You write what you want to write at the time. I never read people’s blogs and thing, “Oh my. This is all about her. I’m not going to read this anymore.” *ahem* Isn’t that what blogs are for? To get into people’s heads and their own unique experiences and perspective? I guess some blogs are public service blogs and whatnot, but I read blogs because I want to get to know people better. What makes them tick. Their way of viewing things. To feel not so alone – like hey, she’s a nut too, that kind of thing.

On the surface, most other people seem to have it all together. I like reading others’ blogs and knowing that underneath it all, we’re all pretty much equally screwed up.

My blog has been all about me lately. Because it’s my blog. It’s my journal. My way of sorting through my own personal sh*t. If I lose readers because of it, I’m perfectly fine with that. But I don’t think I have readers who expect my blog to be any different. ?? And to be honest, I wouldn’t care if I had no readers. I would still blog. Blogging isn’t about appeasing other people. It’s about expression. Having readers who actually comment is just a terrific bonus. Everywhere else it’s all about you. On my blog, it’s all about ME. If you aren’t interested in me and what I have to say, I’m not forcing you to read. In fact, I’d prefer that you didn’t.

I’m going to go read that article!

(Okay, she did have an update: ” Update: I am not saying we should not be blogging about ourselves or our lives. I’m saying, if we keep expecting others to Digg, Stumble, Tweet, or highlight our posts in some manner, and don’t reciprocate, we will soon be labeled as being selfish.” I agree. I think reciprocity is a natural instinct. But it’s a complicated formula.)

As far as post frequency, I have a “Blogging Without Obligation” button on my blog. Blogging is not a job unless you make it one. If you want to be the kind of blog that people check daily as a habit then yes, you should post daily or risk letting people down. But otherwise I say blog when inspiration hits you. I can tell when somebody’s crafted a post just to get one out there, and I don’t judge them for it because I know there’s a lot of pressure out there to BLOGBLOGBLOG, but I have to say that the reading experience does suffer for it. Quality, not quantity.

And all of your posts are QUALITY. You’re good at getting people to think and talk. We are appreciating your posts when you make them, not sitting behind your screen with imaginary whips prodding you on.

    I’m SO sure.

Ahh, Debbie, you got me feeling all warm ‘n fuzzie. Thank you. Your blog is a highlight for me too.

Aimee: What’s up with us all wondering about our blogs lately? Is it the winter weather? If people think you’re trying to incite sympathy they don’t sound very sympathetic. We all go through what we go through and that’s the way it is and we blog about what’s on our minds and in our hearts — all your feedback is really bringing that home to me. You come back here and comment about YOU all you want, Sweetie! Whenever you want. :)

Karyn: That’s so sweet. And you are right, our friends are always in our minds whether we talk to them twice a day or twice a month. But I should be getting over to your blog ‘way more often than twice a month – twice a week, I bet.

Heather, what a wonderful comment. Thank you! I love that you’re a nut too and “underneath it all, we’re all pretty much equally screwed up,” is so true. We are all the same. Yes, Barbara did put in an update (because of me… it was all me!!!) She is one swell gal. Ouch, just a minute, have to adjust my position – those whip marks on my back are hurting again. ;)

Everyone, I feel like a bit of a twit for my insecure moment about this blog. But I guess I’m only human. Well, most of me. My brother Joe swears I was up in that spaceship for half an hour but I honestly don’t remember.

    THANK YOU ALL SOOOOOO MUCH!!

    Smoochies.

I like blogs to be about the people writing them.

I hardly ever comment on blogs though. The first blogs I started reading, people only commented if they had a joke to make, never just to acknowledge presence.

Besides, I don’t want to take up time with reading or replying to my comment when the person can be out and about doing something to blog about ;D

I guess you and I are on the same path. I have cut back my post also. I make my way around to read when I can. I wish I could keep up with this everyday but I cannot.

You have a huge community built up Jannie. Be yourself. Blog for you about whatever. That is what blogging is all about. When you let go of yourself it is not fun anymore. Don’t do that.

You come by my place any time you wish. Comment if you have time if not just leave me a :} to let me know you were there. I have not “stats” keeper so I have no way of knowing who has been there or not unless a comment of sorts is left. I gave away my “stats” keeper when I was becoming panicked by the lack of visits or excited when I had them. I have just settled into a happy to be alive zone. I don’t need numbers. I do however need my friends.

Be you Jannie. That is why you are loved.
