Bristles on a stick

Kitchen Sink | Posted by Jannie on 20 February 2009 @ 7:09 AM 75 Comments

Today I’m so grateful for my wonderful Colgate Torque-4400 Plaque Removal System, as pictured above!   Just a simple item but I’m really really glad to have it, so many people in this world would give their eye teeth for one — which might kinda defeat the purpose, but anyway…

And you?  What simple possession(s) you are grateful for today?

Thousands upon thousands, like 13,000 now, DVD’s and VHS; my whole basement stacked floor to ceiling, every wall filled, several shelves on casters in the middle fo the floor; the whole history of cinema, from BIRTH OF A NATION to MAMA MIA!, surrounding me, teasing me, informing and entertaining me. I started attending at least two movies a week when I was 8 years old, some weekends it is three or four now as I do catch up ball. My film collection also contains 750 hours of Star Trek, all the various series and movies, a complete X-files, and so on; everything on 3×5 cards, cross indexed, recorded, ready to watch or loan to friends.

And although “friends” are not a possession, or maybe they are, they come in strong with me, right after family, dogs, and cats; and that includes cyber friends like Jannie, and imaginary friends like Eddy Emerald.

Carla: I hear you on that! I’d be lost without mine. And couldn’t be comnenting back to you unless I went to the library and shared my daily hour with the cute homeless guys.

Lynn: I have NEVER heard of fat-free half-n-half. What is it half water — half milk? Or what? How do you recycle your post-its? That surely is a hoot about your Doctor GPS! How in the world did it get to that? We cannot have a trash disposal here with our septic field, so I compost – but all my compost does seems to go to birds or rodents. I just have a hole in one corner of the backyard I toss it into.

Glenn: I know an Eddy Emerald! (Well, no, not really..) Amazing and fsacinting about all those movies. If you have Gilbert Grape I’m an extra in it! And I must say I’ll be wildly jealous of you for getting out and seeing all those movies. Last year I’d seen about 95% of the Oscar-nominated feature films before Oscar night. But no darkened theatre afternoons for me this year as I really focus on getting my guitar chops up to speed. Oh well, always DVDs! Will you think of me slaving over my hot strings and frets as you’re out seeing all those yummy new shows?

Dot: Ooo I know exactly you mean on a favorite sweater. The feel, the fit, the right color, everything coming together to provide a perfect little “home” to live in. Have you had the sweater long? Just last year I finally laid to rest one I’d had for 15 years. I still loved it dearly but it was all thresdbare and such.

K: Well, as I understand it, the technology is actually quite simple, so they definitely count! Those are two biggies for me too, would be hellish to get by without. Do you have a dryer too or hang your clothes on the line? I really wish I had a clothes line. And dang, I shoudl get one.

Talon: Oh yesh, that’s a cool thing to have indeed. Your hair is short, right? What’s your favorite conditioner brand? Are you a Pantene Lady?

J.D. Yes, handy little items indeed, I’d even go so far as to say they are what separate us from beasts. Have you had yours for long?

Hmmm…I think today I am most grateful for my guitar. I was able to sneak some playing time in today. Over the last few years it has been my ally, my confidant, and my most challenging adversary. It’s always there for me. It is never judgemental; although, I’m sure it would rather be played by someone much, much more talented than I. Maybe not as simple as a toothbrush, but a staple in my life just the same.

I’m grateful for my cutting board — I had a really nice wooden cutting board back when I lived in New Jersey, and it’s the only thing I KNOW was lost in our move back to Texas (I’m sure something else must’ve been lost, too, because that cutting board was in a box with a few other things… but none of them were as important as my cutting board). So for a while, I was using plates or paper towels as cutting surfaces — and they just don’t work as well. I love to cook, so when I finally bought a new cutting board, it was a very happy day… :)

Finding my reading glasses intact is up there as well but for number two, and this one is really equal to number one(breathing). Waking uo and finding Hortense safely ensconced, albeit in a supine position, next to one in the conjugal cot(so to speak) just about makes my day.George Clooney at the foot end of the bed would be a major surprise but not as welcome as the cuddly form of the venerable Horty.

Aimee: A very eloquent comment on your guitar. What kind is it and how long have you had it? Hearing you play and sing as you did on your site I imagine it will be with you for a long long time, as songwriting is in you too.

Lisa: I too know the joy of a cutting board, nothing quite can take the place of it. Like a can opener. A very specialized item. And where did you get your new one?

Cindy: Ouch, sorry to hear that. It has been very warm lately. What were you doing when you got a sunburn? You probably covered Baby’s skin but neglected your own delicate complexion.

Tumblewords: May I suggest a lovely sweater such as Dot described or one of those dew-fangled cloud blowers, similar to leaf blowers, except quite a bit bigger? (Speaking of which, what in the heck is up with leaf blowers, anyway??

Robbity: George Clooney at the end of my bed would make me blush. If I did find him there tho, I’d ask him to bring me a nice breakfast and then go clean the house top to bottom. What would you have him do?

Weyrd1: I’m gonna have to Google that, actually. Did you know that in Canada, well Eastern Canada anyway, we call half-n-half “blend?” Fascinating, aint it?

Joaquin: Whatever has your toothbrush done to you? Left you with cavities and the pain that comes with those nasty things? Or “other?” Yes, your poem was a visual feast for my ears today. Thanks.

finderskeepers,In reply to your”what would I do with George Clooney” now mind, that did require some serious thought. Last movie we saw him in was ‘burn without reading’. What would I do with him ? I beg this question dear lovely lady…..Why bother asking?
Darling woman after seeing George in any number of wonderful movies the combination of possibles are endless.
F’rinstance ,there was a wonderful Warner cartoon, possibly ‘fore you were born, where a series of unfortunates found a frog who was in a little box and popped out wearing top hat and tails. Frog then did a little routine causing said finders to put him onstage. He would then only just come out of his box sans and go ‘gribbit’,whilst looking an extremely sad, bedraggled froggie, thus resulting in the impressario being soundly castigated. George would look equally good at the foot of my bed in a Top hat etc as well as sans, although I’d rather he didn’t ‘gribbit’. He sings well so he could serenade us as we slumbered, perhaps as an adjunct he could recite lines from our favourite poets. I happen to be Hortense’s most favoured poet and to hear my sorry scribbles issuing from such a dulcet throat would be sublime. Oh m’dear frintipple use your imagination my toothbrush enamoured one, or is it really that you are employed by Colgate as a gun PR.? i.e.. to resurrect the flagging sales of the Colgate Torque 4400 and to rescue trade from the powerful yet easy to use Braun 21 electric (my favoured option)

Sheila: Cranberry bladder tablets! This is why I LOVE blog comments, I never in a million years would’ve imagined one of you woudl be mentioning those Good luck on that! Hope you get all sorted out soon.

Lynn: Holy cow, I am totally going to give that a whirl. If it tastes anywhere aceptable to me I will for sure switch, as in my coffee I add about 120 fatty calories with the regular stuff. Did you like the taste right from the start or was it “acquired”?

Kim: Thank the greater powers for that! Kelly’s had it a couple of times. I’ve actually saved the little tube of ointment from last fall for when she gets it again, as it’s a trip to doctor to be examined in order to get a prescription. Do you think it’s bad to hang onto it, for like — a year?

Natural: Health is it for sure. Have you always been healthy?

Kathy: Did it! And thanks again. As to your last post, just saw Coraline in 3-D today (saw it last week in non-3-D. ) I give the 3-D version a 3.7 and the non-3-Da 3.2. Out of 5, that is.

Paige: You use the smae brand as above too?! The first time I used mine I felt I was at the top of the ferris wheel with my husband the first time he said he loved me. Fabulous brush!

Lisa: I think they sell everything but live bait, puppies and toothpaste at Garden Ridge! Amazing place, that. Do they have them in Chicago too?

Matthew: I am in the market for a pair of those. What brand did you buy? Yeah, the new background’s a little wild, eh? Just like its blog owner!

Wade: Ahhh, air conditioning, what opened up the South to mass settlement, right? At least that’s what my hubby always says, he learned it from one of his Doctor Ruth books. (I think.) How cold do you keep your house in summer nights? Are you one of those 68 degree people? Brrrrr.

Georgie B: Yes, perhaps even more than a toothbrush – pen and paper is more special to me. Could not imagine myself without it. Do you carry some with you all the time? Wait – dumb question, Jannie! Of course he does.

Robbity: How could I not be in the know that George sings? Was it he who did a duet with Robin Wiliams, that Tequila song?. That song, that song… And Jimminy Crickets – I have no earthly idea about any little frong movie, pooping out of a box. btw, Cohen’s in town tonight and I couldn’t get tickets because I had no idea it would sell out so fast. I’ve got the rest of my life (but hopefully not the rest of his,) to get over it.

Heather: I dont know — you tell me and let’s see if we’re of same naughty minds. Come on, we’re all grown up here. I will tell you mine does not at all run on batteries.

    Actually, not a dumb question.

I don’t carry pen and paper with me, because usually I have access to same depending on where I am. I usually get a basic idea for my flash fiction, then work on the outline in my head for a few hours.

If I’m at work (which is where most of this stuff happens) the I surreptitiously take out a piece of paper and write. At home, I’ll retrieve my notebook and write it out.

Example: Friday while driving in, I was listening to Nickelback. The song in particular was called “Figure You Out.” and that gave me the idea. By the time the afternoon rolled around, I was able to hack out a story in about twenty minutes (and yes, it is very clean, with just enough suggestive language to turn you for a loop until you get to the end).

    No, not really.

I find it’s easier to work it out in my head while I’m driving, because usually my mind is pretty empty (insert funny comment here) in the morning.

I like to experience all kinds of things, especially music, while I’m driving. Eventually, I’ll lock into one particular something and I go from there.

Thomma Lynn: They are great toothbrushes And that’s hilarious about your Copy & Paste adventure. I’ve almost filled my password in the website box a time or two. That woulda been quite embarasssing.

Evelyn: Yes, there is nothing quite like tissues. Are you the lotion or non-lotion kind? Sorry ’bout your mucous problem, that’s never fun.

Robbizti: I like how he has the children at the end of that song. I’m going to have some wee ones record on the last verse of a song too. Alas, the ball is over and all the mice scurried home. I shall be at the next one, if there is one.

Georgie: That a great mental exercise to work something out like that, takes a great deal of memorizing I would think. I wonder how succesful I’d be if I were to try it. Not so good probably.

Stacey: A ponytail holder! How many times I am grateful for mine too. Is yours fluffy or smooth?

Renee: Me too on the hair dryer! (and hubby.) Both are known to come in very handy on occasion.

    Lynn: I definetly will!

Georgie: I am impressed with that too, as currently my repertoire is not so large – but working on it.

Kayrn: Please feel free to borrow any idea here. Even the bra flinging if you’re so inclined! Ahh, a sheep. Do you count him as you’re trying to drift off?

Barbara: I’d be lost without my computer too. Any my eyesight, that latter which I consider one of the greatest mircales we have.

    Hi Jannie.

I got my cuckoo clock from a dealer here in Vancouver. It is an authentic German-made clock that I adore. Lol, that it fell on your cat — did the cat pull it down while playing with the chains?

@Trey Cuckoo clocks are wonderful. I guess you’d have to keep the chains out of reach of your dogs. Could be that Jannie’s cats pulled the clock down on themselves that way :-)

@Stacey — I hate brushing my teeth too. I’ve always had bad teeth despite regular brushing. I have to floss every day or I’d have big problems. It’s soooo hard to stand there and floss and then brush too before going to bed. Yuck! But it’s worth it.
