Technical woes

Ass Kicking | Posted by Jannie on 25 March 2009 @ 12:37 PM 53 Comments

Parrott Tracks Studio, 2006

Yesterday wasn’t the first time a computer made me cry.  No indeed. In January 2005 I wailed on and off for two days until two nice computer boys came right here to our house and in less than ten minutes correctly hooked up my interface cables, plugged my microphone and speakers into the right jacks, downloaded updated drivers, fiddled with some Input / Output settings, clapped their hands while clicking their heels twice and voila — instant home-recording studio!

Then, yesterday when the zipped files wouldn’t unzip no matter what I tried (and neither the free WinZip nor Stuffit downloads are actually free,) tears flowed again because I need those unzipped files to get my CD artwork finished.

But guess what?  The CD maker guy e-mailed the templates unzipped.  Yay-freaking-hoo!

Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s cried over technical woes?

(P.S.  I know I haven’t been around to y’alls’ blogs so much lately but after our show today I’m sure I’ll once again lovingly immerse myself in every nuance of your posts.  Thanks for your continued patience and support!)

I once had a whole collection of stories and anecdotes that I’d written saved on my computer, and one day the computer decided to crash. My husband is pretty computer savvy, so he was able to recover SOME of what I’d written, but a large portion of it was converted to useless gibberish. Seeing all those pages of stories reduced to meaningless symbols and random words was definitely cause for tears! That was the day I learned to back up everything I write… :)

Technical woes — I have ‘em here and there, but the last big woe was the Great Hard Drive Crash of 2006. I didn’t lose any writing files (thank goodness), but I lost some pictures which were precious to me, among them my little black kitty girl’s kitten pictures.

These days I’m much, much better about backing up, backing up, and did I mention, backing up? ;)

How terrific that you show went well!! And like so many other Funsters, I luv dat pic of youse at the Mike, singin your Canadian Texan heart out. The Big Shew in May will also go off without a hitch, and your CD’s will sell like cotton candy at a carnival.

I simply go ape shit when my computer gets cranky or touchy. Like friend Doug on FFTL, I just have to have one of my kids come over and straighten me out. My wife is good at calling the Tech Support phone #, but when I try that, you are on hold for frickin hours, and when they do talk with you, they spew such techno-speak that I get lost immediately. I liken my computer skills to a trained primate. Yes, I am, with practice, trainable–but fuggedabout problem solving. Your skills are head and shoulders above mine, but then you are still a young thing and capable of absorbing this new technology, right?

    Hello, Hello.

Thanks, Chris. It’s kind of an “old” pic now, eh? Over 2 years old. I’m normal! I’m normal!! YAY!!

Lynn: I’d love to see you throw a fit! What did you do? Utter any expletives? It just occured to me I might even use that pic on my CD art somewhere, since it was taken during the recording sessions, around the first part, October, ‘06.

K: Ah, you’ve cried too! I am not the only one. Swear words from me over a computer – um, yes, a few have slipped out. In fact, when Kelly was 3 – I heard her say “that f#@king computer.” That was the exact instant I became aware of watching my words.

Lisa: Sorry to hear about your lost writings. That sucks. I need to back up again, thanks for the reminder.

Patricia: You have gotten it all worked out, tho, right? And to me you seem plenty computer savvy, or do you have a magic troll who does it all for you?

Hey Robin: No, I don’t think we have parrots here, not that I know of. But I could be wrong – nothing about Texas surprises me. George Coyne of Parrott Tracks just loves parrots. his sudio is filled with all kinds of pictures and sculptures of them. Yeah, that’s one plus about Macs, eh? Less break-downs, low or no viruses.

Miladysa: Thank you about the photo. Ah, another cryer. I am vindicated. We sensitive souls must band together.

G: You’re so funny! Does your computer ever threaten you right back? And thank you so much about the picture.

Thomma Lyn: Thank you. I am not actually all that pretty, but I manage to fake it from an angle or three. :) I lost pix too in a hard drive crash too, but I’ve saved the drive and one day when I’m rich may well be able to recover them (At least I live in hope.)

Shay: You ‘n me both, eh Soul Sitah. Birds of a feather.

Jeanne: Yeah, life eh? And soon you will get to see and hear me singing, as the video turned out well. After I post this I’m either going to go try to figure out how to upload the video – or take a nap. Probably the latter, but I’ll for sure be working on getting that video up soon.

Teahouse: Every day, eh? You poor thing. OH BOY!!! You are adding me to your blogroll??? Wow, thank you. I am most humbled indeed. As you know, I don’t have a blogroll as such but I certainly keep track of who visits and comments on my blog, and respond in kind. Thanks!!

Talon: Thanks. And yes, it was a GREAT show! Can’t wait to get the video up. We ended up playing about an hour and a half, ’cause we were having so much fun and the next band wasn’t due to play until 6:00. As it turns out it started raining about when we stopped playing so the next band didn’t get to go on after all. It all taped except for the last 15 minutes or so. xo

J.D. So THAT’S what the evil laughter is! (I thought it was all in my head.) Are you a Mac or a Windows guy?

Liara: As I e-mailed you, please tell me more, tell me more! How exactly did I inspire – my comment on Snaggletooth’s blog about the lobster glut?

Carla: Yes, and thanks. Be sure to come back and catch the video!

Barbara: Thanks. I gave up banging my head against the wall by slamming a hammer on my knuckles. Sure made me forget about my head! Thanks for popping in, I know you are very time challenged with your bloggin’ and all.

Snag: budding starlet — LOL! Ain’t they all supposed to be 19 and gorgeous?? Well, do you think you got things all sorted out now? And which anti-virus did you go with, if I may so boldly inquire?

Sheila: I’m back! I’m back!!! With a blogging vengeance, yay. But do you think of me when you see or hear the words bones or chainsaw?? :)

Glenn: I do believe the breath and depth of my technology absorbing capabilities have not even BEGUN to scratch the surface of my nimble googley matter! ;) And the May shew will no doubt be a pleasant breeze wafting through the joyful redwoods of life. I am certain of it. Kalyani and Ryan are such a hoot to play music with. Going apeshit, eh? How does that compare with going batshit? Or does it? ;)

Frimpster,’Tis interesting that you touch upon the subject of technology cloddishness and the gibberish that follows such a condition. I say interesting, as safe in the knowledge that at best my level of intellectual prowess is on par with the Norwegian Blue parrot, I regard most that grace your hallowed pages as being at the level of Einsteins of the PC world. At various times I have partaken on the journey through their respective blog pages and find myself in a bewildering kaleidoscope of moving pictures, things that wave and emit colour, adorned with links to a zillion other pages equally as frenetic and exotic. All marvellous as well, some even feature songs of the day and other delights both aurally and visually whilst my poor offering emits nothing much of note. Hortense has remarked long and loud on this issue but her protestations have unforunately amounted to zilch as try as I might I find that I am the extreme luddite of all luddites.Hanging my head in shame does me no good at all as Horty just says that I look more of a dork than normal and I should just order a new life along with some software so she can fix everything.

Belle: Thanks for the nice compliment, my ego is very in favor of those! And notice how I rushed right over there to give you my rapt love and comments?? It was funny because your comment had just come in and I was still up from my after-show high, thus you had a Jannie comment fest there for a while.

Lane: I generally find companies are much quicker to sell than to serve and repair. Jaded, aren’t I? Liara Covert would set me straight on that bad attitude, because there is always love and light to shine on each life experience.

Well, Dear Lynn, at this very moment I now have the video uploaded successfully to my computer – next step… find out how to fling it onto the unsuspecting world. And a very sweet sister indeed, you have. Luckily printers have gone way down in price. And you can refill most ink cartridges!

Weryd1: I guess backing-up, backing-up, backing-up is he key, as well as All You Need Is Love.

Mama Z: Ah yes, the proverbial bargaining with God. Phisophically, it’s all ones and zeroes which will one day vanish from the face of this planet and “we can’t take it with us and all that” but gee, we sure do get attached to our stuff. I know I do.

Sara: Whoa, I’d definitely hang onto that Kathy Henderson Hurd gal!! Which I’m sure you plan on doing! You were very lucky.

Natural: Hey – my bawling bud, we one and the same, it seems! Good to know there is another who can cry as easily. I almost lost it a while an hour ago trying to upload video my hard-drive. Actually my hubby’s computer – he’s almost out of disk space, so that needs to be rectified A.S.A.P. Yeah me too – so glad to have those templates and I’ve already e-mailed them to my buddy — glorious, wonderful shining star-gem friend, Jae. Among a zillion other things, she’s also a graphic artist. Met her at a song-writing seminar right here in good old Austin!

G: ha! I often get an Outlook Express shut-down if I’ve had an e-mail open for a while, it does send the mail but mysteriously dies after sending. Guess it just took too much out of it, energy-wise.

Steve: Nope, Im too busy feasting my ears on Rush Limbaugh to listen to anything else! But thanks for your concern – as always you are a gentleman and a scholar.

Renee: Yes, I’m kinda cute, ain’t I? And soon you’ll be able to feast yourself on my long luscious locks gallivanting in the breeze when I get that video up! Better than an STD – YOU CRACK ME UP!!! Good thing about frustrating the crap out of you is you’re not constipated! Sorry for your technical woes, I really am. Hope you get them worked out soon. It sucks.

Robbi: All the flash, frenetic links, bodacious mini billboards and other latest blog bling in the world cannot compare with the wit, wisdom and sheer wild cerebral wanderings of one hooman individual such as yourself. Not to insult dear Horty, Hortense is up there but you take the cybering cake.

Ching Ya! It is indeed my greatest humble honor to welcome you to my blog. That you may have stayed for perhaps more than one minute here, then commented too deeply moves me in a most happy way. Because you see, 98% of my commenters have been unsuspectingly lured here by yours truly. And it is always a delight to have someone appear out of the blue. Thank You! And since I am a Twitter initiate but with now almost 20 Followers and growing by one a week – I believe I shall consult your no doubt vast knowledge on the matter. Thank you!

Stacey: Ah, another soul who cares deeply, as I do believe that’s what these tears are all about – caring about getting it done and done right. And YOU, enjoy your creative path through the stars today, my dear lady.

Lance: Yay-freaking-hoo, indeed!!! Somehow I fail to see a big strong guy like you – or any of you male commenters cry over cyber woes. I’m sure it’s a girl thing! Ah, God make us funny, didn’t he?

Momisodes: I am so, so sorry to hear that. Were your files backed up before the crashes? And you with an IT husband. I can imagine it would be many, many, many tears. Shoot, how can you prevent that from happening again?

Christina: Ah ha! You have a Real Job too, eh? And you law office people NEED your computering. I guess we all do these days. Or at least think we do!

Mia: You seem like a smart girl, keeping your computer in line and all. Hope you will stay the course on that. And don’t forget to back up!

Hey Kim: I’ve got a PC. Thanks for the free unzipping info. I’ve got this mini crisis handled but that info that will no doubt come in handy in the future for me! THANKS.

    Joy: Thanks for understanding.

Rhett: Have you had the zip / extract problem too? Luckily I neer have to woroy about it with Wordpress things. But it got sorted out.

Liara: Yes, there seems to always be something I’m pressing myself to do, some great all-encompassing need to fulfil. And after I let it go I see it for just the little blip it was in the Grand Scheme. I guess the secret is to make it all a series of little blips.

I haven’t actually cried, but I have wanted to shoot the computer or toss it off a bridge. It’s amazing what those guys can do when they have all the facts at their fingertips. That used to be me, but I’ve forgotten it all and don’t need it enough to stay current. Right now my printer is rejecting the color ink cartridge, which has just be refilled. So everything prints in black and white. I hear ya.

I’m far from being a computer novice, and I have even had my sanity destroyed by a computer that wasn’t working properly.
