Got Gravatar? No? It’s Easy!

Ass Kicking, Blogging | Posted by Jannie on 8 June 2009 @ 6:23 AM 62 Comments

Globally Recognized Avatars — a.k.a. Gravatars, are those little square photos that appear beside blog comments.

Maybe you’ve seen mine around?

Lately, as some of you have noted, I’ve changed up the automatically-generated comment images for the not-yet-Gravatarred of you.  I was tired of the old “identicons” and upon experimenting with Wordpress’ other choices of aliens and monsters, which are too weird even for me, plus some of you were assigned sad faces and that just won’t do, I’ve settled on…

w
the highly esteemed mystery man photo credit:buildinternet.com

Friends, if you don’t have your own Gravatar, It’s SO EASY to get one and YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE A WORDPRESS BLOG for it to work, the latter tidbit I owe to the wonderful bloggers Karyn and Barkaly.

Here’s what Gravatar.com says…

“Signing up for a gravatar.com account is FREE, and all that’s required is your email address. Once you’ve signed up you can upload your avatar image and soon after you’ll start seeing it on gravatar enabled sites, like Jannie’s!”

Of course, I could’ve told you that myself but I have to show off that I finally figured out how to do a blockquote box!

Go Jannie, go!  Kick some blockquote keister!

Hey, and once you have your Gravatar, all your past comments become magically retroactively Gravatarred.  And Gravatar.com does not use your e-mail address for anything even remotely nefarious. Plus, and get this  — just for signing up, Gravatar will send you and 7 friends on an all-expenses-paid first class World Cruise!!!

So, if you don’t have a Gravatar and would like one, why delay another moment! Go now — Go! To Gravatar.com.

And for those of you who already have your Gravatar, have you anything you might like to share about yours?

Good morning, Lynn! It is like a Gravatar quilt to keep you snuggly with all your buddies, isn’t it.

I like your eye around here very much!

And I added in the bit that some of the faces were downright sad, but my peeps are super-happy and I couldn’t quite relate to those.

I see on another site, Blogging Without A Blog, she actuallly has her default character set to her blog’s theme, so maybe I can experiment with something like that.

    Cheers to you too!

    Hey Jannie,
Your gravatar IS globally recognized! No…change that – gravatar – yours IS “galaxy-lly recognized”. The “eye”…well, I think we’d know it anywhere. Even in outerspace, you’re recognized! Not in any alien-creature sort of way, though.

Mine? It’s me near Mount Rainier. I like to think of it as me on the journey through my life, and the “mountains” I’m climbing along the way.

Well, hi ya’ll. I dropped Kelly off at her gymnastics camp and she was so happy to see one of her little friends there too, it’ll be a swell week for sure for her. (And me, hee-hee.)

Betsy: I’ve always thought your Gravatar absolutely charming. How can one not? And were you to be be naked in a bucket when we first meet I think it will be delightful. And if I’m just one humongous eye, you won’t be too freaked out, will you?

Lynn: Yeah, some of the monsters were cute, others pretty hideous. But some of the faces Wordpress calls “wavatars,” were down-right depressed looking. I’m totally going to ask Kim Woodbridge about that default comment picture Barbara has! And then I’ll decide what a good picture would be. Something that both boys and girls would like, a tree maybe, part of a seascape. A donut! Yes, pastry!! :)

Lance: Just awesomely famous throughout the Universe with our Gravatars, aren’t we?! I don’t think I could ever change mine. Actually I do have a suggestion for anyone thinking of abruptly changing theirs, do kind of a split-screen for a few months to get people used to the new one, then boom — change to the new one. (Please don’t mention to anyone, as it may seem unhumble but sometimes I’ve got good ideas!) :) I love your smiley-faced Gravatar indeed! Sometimes I wish I had done that, but other than our coloring, I really don’t resemble you all that much. :) And hey, speaking of outer-space, I love my new starry background! It’s a GIF, of course. Love changin’ up my GIFs!

Caity: Yay – I’m funny!?! Whee-hoo. And I’m not even really even trying, that much. Your Gravatar’s cool. And of course I’ve still got major camera envy. But I may start saving for one. Yeah! Then what will you all do with me??

Lisa: So those really are your feet, huh? I assumed so, but one can never know for sure. I promise when first we meet I’ll look at your head first, then your fingernails, then your knees, then your feet.

Dot: Oooo, a new look. Can’t wait to see it! If you have a timer on your camera you could get it all set up well and take it yourself. I plan on doing that to me sometime. By “not really being into the quilt thing,” you mean you wouldn’t relish the chance to snuggle up together with all your wonderful blog buddies on a cold winter’s night? :) And Dot, it was my pleaseure to feature your winning tagline last week. I think I have 5 or 6 more weeks to go with the rest of the winners, then I’ll be doing a re-cap post with an additional link to you all and even a little blurb for those so crushingly deafeated in the Seriously Weird contest.

Hey Karyn, hello brand-newly Gravatarred person! And Barkaly is so so cute, I know I’ve said that ad nauseum but she really is such a sweetie. I’m a big lover of little fluffy dogs too, as you may know. And it was my pleasure to link you guys. And thanks again for the tip that you don’t need a Wordpress blog to have a Wordpress Gravatar. Yay!! And our weather, will most likely be up around 90 and sunny — welcome to Texas late spring / early summer!

J.D. Well, I think since you already have your Gravatar, you’re not eligible for the new deal, boo hoo – unless you get a new one under a new e-mail address. But guys, I totally recommend anyone who will be taking advantage of the new Gravatar to make YOU one of the 7 friends taken on the cruise. Everybody — J.D.s a swell guy and you won’t go wrong on a world cruise with him!

When Kelly was a baby it magically lightened itself back to my childhood color. Life is full of wonderful mysteries indeed.

Talon: With all those gorgeous photos you have to choose from it would be a great deep disservice to the Internet were you not to become Gravatarred. And I might just go in a corner and cry over that.

K: Believe me I am no Internet or blogging expert – far far from it, (you hear that Aimee? I am so not up on things, really,) but I just wanted to pass on a little info. And it really is an easy thing to do, if you are so inclined to get your very own Gravatar.

Cool Chris! You sure did do it!! Yes I know switching blogs can be a daunting thought. It took me over a year about thinking and talking about it to finally go with Wordpress. Of course, my old limiting blog never had comments, so it was a very very wise choice for me. What do you find limiting about Typepad? Your blog looks great and you get a lot done with it, it seems to me. If you switch to Wordpress, I’m sure you’ll catch on quickly — hey if I can, anyone can!

Your gravatar is such an IMPORTANT decision – it’s really one that shouldn’t be taken lightly – because as you’ve seen – people online will tend to think of you AS your gravatar.

Think of it as a form of “blog branding”.

Now, for the really pressing issue – How do I claim my cruise tickets?

I contacted my IT lady and she’s going to set my default image up for my comments without gravatars. You know how Barbara Swafford has her little books with the apple on top? So I just have to decide on what image would be great, will be fun picking something from among all my pix. Any suggestions?

Hey Kath: I’ll take exactly that into consideration in choosing my default one for commenters without gravatars yet. It is very appreciated what you advise. Pictures being worth many many thousands of words sometimes. “Blog branding,” yes, good! Oh, you have to contact Gravatar yourself for those tickets, ask for the WCPD — World Cruise Perks Department. :)

Natural: Yours is cute, couldn’t imagine you without it. Or it without you. Forever and ever. Did you make yours yourself, and if so, how?

For fear of endangering the eyesight of the www I choose to use items that represent me-my gravatar…

The background is a brown faux fur- brown is earthy you know I’m mostly grounded, faux because my pen name is made up and not my real name- to protect me from the wrath of some unsavory ex-family

The paper is cause I like writing on it and making it

The pen well how can one write without a pen

The rose is cause I grew it and it added a bit of spark to the otherwise drab photo

The words on the paper is on accounta my blog only represents a little bit of my life

And the crown, because we are worthy of being a Queen, but it has faux diamonds and therefore we are just faking it

    Of course this is all analyzed after I just randomly grabbed different things to photograh {{{grin}}}

Heck, why is yours not showing up on your OWN blog, I need to head over to your place after I post this to see what’s up.

Carla: Well, that’s really interesting and a learning experience that a character out of place will make a gravatar not show up. A good thing to know indeed. I like your photo, it’s very mysterious. Are you seriously thinking of updating it?

    been here today Jannie………..
I am computer challenged but when I get more time to look over this I am going to check it out. Right now, I have not been blogging much because life has been so hectic. And I am about to start a 6 day work week. Which means I am not going to be home much at all until next week.

I will stay as is. I have about a half dozen Wordpress blogs that I frequent, in addition to this one, so having a randomly assigned gravatar for Wordpress blogs suits me to a T, even if the random one is blank.

I’m at the point where the only avatar I care about, is the one that is currently attached to me as a member of Blogger (which for those of you who haven’t yet taken a peak at my blog, is a kitten with a lime football helmet).

Tammy: I hate when real life intrudes on blogging. A six-day workweek does sound like a real challenge. I hope you get some days off after?

Snag: When and if the time is right for you, it will make me grin from ear to ear to see your gravatar.

Hey G: At this point it looks like you will soon be a Blue Bunny here, but if you change your mind and gravitate to your very own Gravatar, you can grace even more pages of the www with your lime-helmeted bunny, who btw makes me lol, whenever I see it.

Christine: I think Gravatars are a lot of fun. And of course, I’m such a hyper-visual geek anyway.

Liara: Yes, and since all 3 choices to consider (wood duck, blue bunny and fan palm,) in the post following this have a good significance for me, any of them serve to make me happy like a little girl with a new skipping rope.
