46 Blogging Observations So Far

Blogging, Family, Just Good Stuff | Posted by Jannie on 7 August 2009 @ 7:22 AM 62 Comments

1967: Me, Brother Joe, Brother Harry & Tom the cat  (See # 36 below.)

During the course of my extremely long blogging career – almost eleven whole months now,  I’ve learned a thing or 46 I’d like to share …

1.   Blogging can take up a LOT of time.

2.   Blogging can be addictive.

3.   Bloggers need just as much sleep as non-bloggers.  Sleep – right up there with oxygen for humans.

4.   I will not die if I run out of time to read every single word of every single post of every single one my blogging buddies, it only feels that way.  (I hate getting behind.)

5.   It’s okay to post on my own schedule.

6.   Since I can’t do justice to ALL 137 social media sites, I’ve picked a couple favorites to learn inside-out — Stumble Upon and Twitter.  Facebook I use more for long-lost cousins, whom I’ve found 296 of so far!  (Long Canadian winters and no tv for my grandparents made for lots of bouncing Funster babies.)

7.   The wild beast of Efficient Twittering can and hopefully will be tamed by me. (I’m up to page 177 of “Twitter For Dummies” at this writing.)

8.   Bloggers are a super nice bunch of peeps.

9.   Bloggers are a supportive bunch of peeps.

10.  I can go from laughing on one friend’s blog to crying on another’s to laughing again on another’s in the space of minutes.

11.  Blogging connects souls.

12.  I care as deeply for some bloggers as I do for real life friends I’ve known for years.

13.  My blogging buds often, if not usually, know more than I do on topics I post about. I never cease to be amazed.

14.  I am surprised there are still psychotherapists around with all this blogging love and wisdom to be had for free.

15.  It’s great to share helpful things on blogs.  Why hog the good stuff?

16.  Being controversial for the sake of pageviews is not something I’d ever feel comfortable doing.

17.  I must be kind, I never know how my words will affect someone.

18.  I must be sincere, I never know how my words will affect someone.

19.  Commenting is fun, free and easy.

20.  Linking a great blogger up is fun, free and easy.

21.  People like me to be ME. (Go figure.)

22.  Commenters appreciate the gift of shorter posts once in a while, or maybe more than once in a while.

23.  If I write a long post I think is compelling, I don’t feel the need to inwardly apologize for “taking up” so much of my readers’ time.

24.  Sometimes writing a post, letting it sit, then trimming the fat is good.

25.  My best posts are usually the ones that bubble up and write themselves quickly.

26.  I catch inspiration when it hits for rainy-day post ideas.

27.  Sometimes I wonder “Why the heck am I even blogging at all?” But those moments pass and lead to moments of “I LOVE blogging — it’s the best.”

28.  Blogging enthusiasm ebbs and flows.

29.  When blogging growth stalls I keep going.

30.  It’s good to be patient with blogging, to keep moving optimistically forward and making connections.

31.  Blogging cream rises, but good blogs must be promoted.

32.  SEO can bring a ton of traffic.

33.  Using stats can be very helpful to draw traffic, maybe even loyal traffic.  By poking around in my Google Analytics a lot has been revealed to me.  (Google stats are free.)

34.  I still don’t know how to write a proper About page. And I keep hearing About pages are important.

35.  Getting away from the computer into the wilds of Real Life is a wonderful thing.

36.  People love photos in blog posts, especially ones from my personal life.

37.  I love photos in posts, especially ones from bloggers’ personal lives.

38.  Commenting on an A-List blogger’s post can bring in traffic, but there is a way to overdo it.

39.  Some blog communities are not so much communities as cliques.

40.  I never want this blog to become a clique and will continue to be aware of that.

41.  As to content, the mind’s the limit. One can never get TOO creative in blogging.

42.  Once in a while I’m a little fearful before I publish something weird or potentially that people might not approve of, like what may or may not be a funny photo session,) but as Bold Tess says in her Inspirational Book, your successes are usually preceded by fear.

43.  I CAN be bold — do reviews, guest posts, put ads on my site, switch to a crazy background color, etc.

44.  I wonder if I’ll ever reach a satisfied place as I strive for bigger and better blogging things?

45.  The more I realize just how deeply I can get into blogging and the promotion thereof, the more I realize just how deeply I can get into blogging and the promotion thereof – which leads right back to point #1 …  TIME.

46.  I’ve got a whole heck of a lot more to learn about blogging.

Any observations on my observations or ones of your own to add?

Great post Jannie! I have to admit that I go up and down with blogging, sometimes cursing it for being time consuming, mostly loving it for the connections and opportunity to write, connect and express ideas. And with your photo today, you have clearly reminded me – people DO love photos, especially those personal ones. Your photo made me smile. Thanks!

    Are we long-lost distant cousins????

Excellent blogging observations and tips, Jannie. I find if I’m true to who I am, blogging remains a wonderful creative outlet and a fantastic way to make friends. Blogging has introduced a new element into my life that I enjoy very much and anticipate enjoying for a long time to come.

Hello dear Betsy: I think everything you share with us IS fascinating, because it’s all so YOU. And I’ll be off as soon as I post this to hang on your every latest sylable in Passing Thruville. So there! Wait, does syllable have 2 ls. Yes, I think it does, looking at it now.

Hey Carol: Yay, you smiled at my photo! Three little farm kids in front of our house. Our brother Pat must’ve been nappping or something. He was 15 months younger than I. Sadly pat died in a car crash when I was 17. Anyway, blogging has it challenges but I, like you, overall am totally enthralled with it!

Lance, my long-lost cousin! Of course, we are all cousins back not too far, eh? Yes number 4 — so many absolutley wonderful blogs and bloggers, never enough time. Yes, and 25 — usually what’s right on the tip of our minds is what we’re most passionate about and this communicates. I actually wrote this post pretty fast, then went back and kind of grouped like ideas together. Oh – I’ve got your list of interview questions ready!! Just going to get out the typos and they’ll be in your cyber hands within 24 hours. Are you excited?? I know I AM, whee-hoo!!

Talon: Just thinking this morning about the flurry of activity that must be going on in your life with the wedding so close now!!! Yet, true to yourself, you take the time to connect with your blogging friends in the wonderful way that is all your own. spreading your light and love. Have I told you lately just how special you are to me and how much I appreciate you? I haven’t? Well, I’ve been thinking it.

Gosh, gee whiz, heck, dang…all I can say is once a person has become addicted to a blog here and there, it is strange not to check in on those “friends” daily. Remember when I posted the first few comments and ended up offending one of the Funsters? Really thought I would get the boot in the Buttkus on that day, but Jannie has the big heart, and somehow I was forgiven, and now I am a passionate funster, looking forward to every click on the Funsterville Trolly. Seriously, I have only been blogging a couple years, and like you, only intensily over this last year. Time is of the essence, but somehow we find it, squeeze it out of each day, like blood from a stone, like yeast from Wonder bread. Seriously, I love all (46) insights that you have shared, and because of your attitude toward blogging, and your blogging family of finicky funsters, we all keep coming back–and you never disappoint. As Kelly grows, the tone will change probably, if this social experiment last for years ad infinitum. Friend Doug asked me the other day how in hell did I find the time to post 4,178 items on my site in just 2.5 years. It is like you visited over 100 sites every day and dropping in long enough to make a comment. The Jannie comments on each of our personal sites are high points of our reviewing later. So BLOG ON, Ms. Funster, and we shall eat your dust, and like it.

Wade: Yah, what’s up with all this blog introspection stuff? But with 500 posts under your belt, I don’t see you stopping anytime soon. I hope? Your rare wit and story-telling is always a delight.

Karyn: I do try to change up those, er, cough-cough, blue bunnie does try to change up his comments frequently but he does tend to be off in the meadows frolicking and sometimes forgets about his duties. Yep, crashed from the roof into a pile of scrap metal. Ouch. 199 stitches in my fanny, but that’s Grannie Jannie fanny to you. :)

Lynn: When? When have YOU ever left a comment without much thought in it? Not on this blog, methinks. If you went around saying “Great Post” or “I agree,” throughout the blogosphere or trying to sell me Viagra, cheap insurance or lottery tickets,I could see it, but I’ve counted the words in every comment (as I’ve done to each and every comment I’ve ever received, for study purposes,) and you are at exactly 87.5 words per comment, and every one of them nothing short of pure bliss. So be of happy heart, my friend. You are an amazing blogger (and peep.)

Chris: But are we in the deep or the shallow end of the blog pool? And let’s not even talk about the gene pool. (please forgive advanced silliness, jannie got up to pee and ended up at the puter.) And hey, where’s your hat??? I could swear you had a hat in your gravatar. And were outside. Oh well. Ooooo, I must check out your About page, maybe steal your ideas for mine.

It’s 5:01 a.m. I am very tired. I am going back to bed.

Glennis Maximus: Of course we all must forgive each other on this journey through human-ness, even the Great Jannie makes mistake – hey, I make more than most people. I’m all about forgiving anyway. Life’s too short. And why hold a grudge anyway? It is interesting that you, as a much more experienced parent than I, predicts my tone here may change as Kelly grows. More serious, you mean? Well, I don’t visit over 100 sites a day, maybe 40 on a good day, that’s why I often feel I’m trying to catch my blogging tail.

Davina: And we love you to be YOU, of course! Yes, Sept 22nd will be my 1st blogoversary, with Wordpress anyway (before I came to my senses and ditched web.com.) I’m so excited to be almost 1 year old, but what WILL I wear for the occasion?! My blue chiffon has a hole in it.

Deere Glenne: and my jannie donts ushlly use her bucktotts, now they stikking out like a soar thum, and is hurts.

K: Yes, I have found comment exchanging to be very true. Trying to reach a larger audience, ones that may be more of just readers, or even lurkers, is always in the back of my funstermind, they say that’s all about adding value to the reader’s life, and with a nicheless niche makes it a little harder to pursue. But I’m doing it — oh yeah!

Positively Present: Hi, Dani! For about 2 months or less now I’ve been hitting the Stumble Button on a lot of blogs about blogging, learning some fascinating stuff. I do wish I knew more HTML, but there is only so much time in the day! Still for me, it’s mostly about expression and connection, whoo-hoo.

Vered: Something tells me you were BORN with a sharp brain and have always been that way! But yes, there is always so much to learn, I feel like I’m getting a real crash course in blogging lately. It’s kinda fun, tho!!

Caity: I love how your blog has grown a lot lately, reflecting your happiness, new marriage and general life enthusiasm. It was SO COOL to see you guest-posting over at Tess.’

G: It’s been great getting to know you over the past year. I remember some of your first comments, so long ago. I LOVE BLOGGING TOO! So great we have connected. And today I am dusty coral with cranberry splotches in the face. :)

Dear Lovely Bold Tess, so nice to meet you, I’ve heard a lot about you and most of it good. :) #12 — you know YOU are right up there on that list! You do know that, right?? #14 – yeah, I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life. #39. Alexa… pleeeeease let me break 100,000 someday. Pleeeeas, Alexa. I’m at 370,690 at this writing. #42, but of course, my little buttercup. :)

Avani Mehta: Yes, you’ve been blogging since June, 2008 and know about trying to keep it all balanced, you know where I’m coming from with these. So many of us can relate and nod along.

Paige: Yep, you in the know too.

Mama Z: What is it with the About Page, it’s kinda like writing your own high-school yearbook blurb I think – what the heck to say. Maybe I should have a post asking you guys for suggestions on my About page. Not a totally bad idea, actually for a post.

Joaquin! I’ve figured it out! Your Edgar Allen Poe gravatar reminds me of Peter Sellers. And if you don’t mind me saying so, your comment made me feel super warm,, fuzzy and special. THANK YOU! The genuine ones are always a gift, that reaches right into my heart and gives a big old happy yank.

Thomma Lyn, the waxing and waning, yes — ain’t it the truth. I see you are being very balanced in blogging and all else. And of course you’re working on your novels, so I admire and look up to you a lot.

Walter! You are my first Walter here, yay. You win a prize! Five smiley faces in a row. :) :) :) :) :) Blogging can be the absolute greatest thing in the world. Hope you’re having fun with it.

Shay: I would imagine you’d have a much larger following than 10 on your poetry blog, with your mind-stopping work that flows from you prolifically and as naturally as a river to the sea.

Hello Liane! Welcome, I am looking at your gravatar and trying to figure out what’s in there? (My eyes are not as good s they used to be.) Looks like a baby and a boom box and a serape and maybe a pile of laundry and some toys on a hardwood floor? Really glad you liked the list and my “Interesting” observations. :)

Snag: Yes, and as I was looking at that picture and seeing which hand I crossed over which I am aware that hand-clasping must be a life-long trait in favor of which we favor. It’s still my left I cross over my right. And you?

Rhett: When I finally met some of my penpals from England it took me days to decipher their accents, so you shouldn’t feel too bad. And it would only be a matter of time until I got used to your accent. And you to mine. :)

Barbara: Well, I’m sure I could (and will) add to this list but so far these are what stand out to me. Your list, as a more experienced blogger would probably contain these and much more. YES!! FUN. When it stops feeling fun I back off a little and breathe.

Sheila: Really? You can relate to #42 and feeling a little trepidation at posting something a little “off the beaten path???” I never would’ve guessed that about you, just goes to show your inner boldness, indeed. Cool!

Tammy: Yep, trying to pull your livelihood right out from underneath you. A big fat :) right back at ya! And Tammy, please don’t read this blog without adult supervision or unless under the care of an accredited health professional. :)

Robbi, let me here copy that bit of code so that after blue bunnie has moved on to another train of thought, this will still make sense… “my jannie just flue off the roof wit her new parashoot. she mite needs 200 stitchers in her bucktotts.– blue bunnie manigemints.” There! my jannie bucktott’s are in her derryaire, last time she checked. :)

Ahhhhhh, Kathy, another comment making me feel all warm and cuddly. I’m serious tho, that About page stumps me up and cause me fright in my sleep at night.

Zeenat: What a lovely comment, thanks. Soul Connection on every level from the pure energy light that transcends any chaos or disharmony has got to be a great thing, right?

And OMG, Peeps did I really just sit down here an hour ago for what I thought would take 15 minutes? Hmnn, now what was that Number 1 again on this observation list…

“Blogging enthusiasm ebbs and flows” is a great observation — it’s always helpful for me to remember that the “ebbs” will pass, and that I haven’t permanently lost that bloggin’ feeling in those moments.

What a great list — I found myself nodding in agreement with many of these, but I’m more pleased to realize that I learned some things.

To me, blogging has been an affirmation that if you do what you love, success will follow. Even if it’s yet unrealized, the feeling of being on the right track has improved other areas of my life.

Hi Jannie – like the list! I reckon you already know quite a bit about blogging – SURELY there isn’t too much more to learn? Interesting what you say about fear (no 42) – I have quite often felt fear before posting my more extreme posts – with one of them I became quite ill! – R x

Chris, your comment reminds me of that old Righteous Brothers tune, “You’ve Lost That Blogging Feeling.” (whoa-oh, that blogging feeling.) You’ve lost that blogging feeling. But it comes. And goes. Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh. :)

The Word Wire: Welcome! Really? You learned something? I wonder what you’ve learned? It is interesting how we are all on our own blogging paths, blogging for different reasons and to different degrees. And i love what you say about feeling like you’re on the right life track when you have success in one area. It does spill over, doesn’t it?

G: Just make sure I’m never a Blast from the past for you, okay? 300 posts, cool! I’ve only got about half that.

Hey Snag-a-licious: Abandoned? You mean people deleting their whole blogs?

Weyrd1: Believe it or not, you are close to the top of my blog visiting list. Very close at this point. Can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to over there. Oh, and just funning about my ass needing stitches.

Hey Robin: I have learned a TON about blogging, I guess now for me it’s about how much deeper do I really want to get into it, in terms of getting more traffic — and that involves time. But I’m open to seeing how and where I go, and just getting new and hopefully interesting posts up is success for me. Oh no, I am sorry to hear you got ill over one of your posts, you poor dear, there is so much more to blogging than meets the eye — and so many differing opinions out there.

    God night. Good morning.

just now, I couldn’t help but notice how many folks were here by way of bing.com.

So how do I get binged, or bonged as the case may be?

Oh never mind I’ll just google “how to get binged”

    Yeah, that’ll do it

Hey Paige: From what I can tell Bing is MSN’s new search engine, I believe thy just merged with Yahoo. But I might not be correct on that. Did you Google how to get Binged? You could also Bing how to get Googled. :)

    Jannie,

Wow! What a list! Before I forget to tell you, I love the photo (and yes, photos make things more interesting).

That list is awesome! You really hit the nail on the head. It must have taken quite awhile to write this post.

What you said resonated with me and I daresay it will resonate with just about any blogger out there.

I love the waxing and waning part. Some of the most dedicated, productive, enthusiastic bloggers I know have times where they wonder, “why am I doing this?” I’m not sure why that is but I have heard many bloggers express this.

That is an amazing list!! :)

Yes, well sometimes fear is just good internal advice and will precede catastrophe.

What a great list, I can relate to the majority of these, too. Especially #8 and #9, fellow bloggers are so supportive and kind and it’s great. And #46, I don’t think I’ll ever know all there is to know about blogging– and I’m okay with that!

This is such a great list I don’t even think I could add anything to it if I tried!

    Hi Jannie,

I love your list and have to say, I am honored to be included in number 20. Thank you so much.

This past weekend, my husband and I met up with up another blogger and her family. Even though it was the first time we met, it felt like we all had known each other for years. One of the many things I love about blogging is the fact that you can meet so many wonderful people.

I just wish all these wonderful people lived closer to me but I am just so happy to know such amazing people. You are one of those amazing people and thank you for being you and sharing your life with all of us. You rock! :)

I love #5 “It’s okay to post on my own schedule”. Its too easy for me to get caught up on not blogging on schedule and it can suck the joy out of it. Regarding #9 – if it wasnt for my fellow bloggers, I probably would have quit a lot time ago.

    Great list!

Hey Jeanne: Surprisingly it did not take me all that long to write this, I just kind of brain-stormed, then grouped them roughly by category. My guess is those of us not making much income from our blogs are more liable to ask from time to time why we are blogging at all.

Lane: Yes, or precedes catastrophe, exactly! But joke the world if they can’t take a… a… well, joke ‘em.

Morgan: I wonder if I’ll have another 46 observations this time next year as blogging unfolds itself to me ever increasingly? Some even say blogging is dead – oy.

Nadia: I have yet to meet any bloggers, tho 3 of them live right here in Austin. I hope to meet them this coming year, even if just for coffee. But of course I had to link up your wonderful blog — talk about not hogging the good stuff. You more than rock!

Carla: I know some say for a successful blog you must post very frequently, 5-7 times a week but that’s just too much for me at this point. I may get around to posting more frequently. I’ll see how it goes, how I evolve.

    Jannie,

Very good point. My rough grand total from the two Amazon checks I have received so far is about $32.00, if memory serves… and most of that was holiday shoppers. So I am sure as hell not doing it for the money. :)

I think you have a good point, though. Since I work on the blog and/or social networking that supports the blog 7 days a week, I am bound to occasionally ask myself, “why am I doing this?”

The answer is always the same (helping people, therapeutic for me to write) but sometimes I need to remind myself. Burnout can happen all too easily. That’s what I have to watch for.

The Blogo-drama for this week was: apparently my old blog-buddy “Neo” hit the “delete blog” option by accident, (in Blogger) then a dude immediately stole the address n profile page too, which was odd- n he just had to wrestle support to the floor to get his address back- finally today.
He deleted his original blog before awhile back, n had to get a new address when he wanted to do it again. I thought he stopped again, but it was a mistake, n actually got fixed- wow! His link “JBI” is now back in ESR’s sidebar again.

Jeanne: After 10 months since my last Adsense check I have reached $100.00 again! I should be getting that soon. I previously earned $100, which only took me a couple months to get on my old site where I did a lot of songwriting posts and targeted songwriters. I think just expressing myself is why I like to post, and of course the freindships are golden!

Snag: Thank God he got his blog URL back. Did he lose all his posts, tho? Yucky business this accidental deleting.
