Hey, How ‘Bout A Show Tune!
Song Stuff, Videos | Posted by Jannie on 1 October 2009 @ 7:08 AM 63 Comments
Yep, another tune from my CD release party this past May, a song to be incorporated into the “I Need A Man” musical I am newly enthused about and back to working on again!
7 of the 12 tunes on My First CD and probably another 8 or 9 of the ones I’m writing now will comprise the show. I still don’t have it all figured out yet, but hey – I’m confident the plot will fall into place and that after a rather circuitous romantic journey involving chainsaws, pastries and a motorcycle cop, a man will indeed be gotten for the protagonist. I think her name might even be Esther Vonvandervester.
For me, the best thing is creating. Such a rush to bring a song from a snippet of idea into a full-blown mini-story.
Whoo-hoo.
Here are the lyrics from the above tune, in case the slightly-less-than-pro quality recording was hard to make out.
Kissing 39 Good-Bye
1.
They’re Singing “Happy Birthday”
It’s time to cut the cake
Take me back to thirty
Is the wish I’m gonna make
Another year’s disappeared so fast
Fading forever like a fireworks flash
And I am, I am…
Kissing 39 Good-bye again
Kissing 39 Good-Bye
2.
Took my youth for granted
Thought I was the chosen one
‘Cause this isn’t how I planned it
I was supposed to stay young
Another year’s disappeared so fast
Fading forever like a fireworks flash
And I am, I am…
Kissing 39 Good-bye again
Kissing 39 Good-Bye
Bridge: La-dee-da-dee-da-dee-da-dee-da-dee
La-dee-da-dee-da-dee-da-dee-dum
Singing, singing “Happy Birthday”
La-dee-da-dee-da-dee-da
La-dee-da-dee-da-dee-dum
3.
All those pretty ladies
On the covers of the magazines
Those picture-perfect babies
Some still seventeen
Will see the years disappear so fast
Fading forever like a fireworks flash
And they’ll be, just like me…
Kissing 39 Good-bye again
Kissing 39 Good-Bye
Kissing 39 Good-Bye Good-Bye
Kissing 39 Good-Bye Good-Bye
Kissing 39…. Good-Bye
Y’all have a great day now, ya hear!! xo

yes, blue bunny, life is nise todae, with Jannie warbling like a Texas songbird. Great that you are being called by your music again. For those of you, those very few perhaps that do not possess the bitchin’ CD of I NEED A MAN, you need to do yourself a favor and get one. This song, KISSING 39 GOOD-BYE is terrific, poignant, yet peppy, sad, lyrical, bouncy, bombastic, and worthy.
And of course, the lyrics can stand by themselves as a bit of the old poetics. I posted it on FFTR:
http://bibliosity.blogspot.com/2009/10/kissing-39-good-bye.html if anyone wants to check it out.

Hey Jannie,
That is so beautiful, listening to you sing in your own world with that inner creation flowing straight through you. I love the words, they feel so unique to you, and I also love your band and the instruments that go with the story of the song.
It is nice to be back, but already I am getting deep into the heart of people by visiting their inner worlds on here, and spending a lot of time online-ah the joys! I was away on holiday for a week in the South of France. Just before my Birthday.
I hope you are well.

Glenn: Ahhhh, too kind sir, far too kind. I do kinda like this little ditty, fun to sing. And yep, settling into a fine school year and gettin’ up on the writin’ horse. And Glenn!!! Holie-Kazowie. How did you learn to do that link thing, over on your blog??!
Congrats, a wonderful step forward for not only you but mankind. Cool!
Ana: Tough job having to hang out in the south of France — but somebody’s got to do it.
Yep, I guess the words in that song are quite “strangely” me.
Happy birthday! I hope you are enjoying immersing yourself in the joys of blogging worlds? Do you think you will be blogging for all your life, as I hope to.
Lance: Ahhh, a good song for you then. I need to check Facebook and see when your special day is, you young-un, you.
Where were you born? Right in Wisconsin? Far from where you live now, or up in the hills with the frilly-shirted fairies?
Hey Jewel: Your comment on my Birthday Bash Post prompted me to put up something musical for you guys. It’s such a part of my daily life I take it for granted but I need to let you guys in on my song goings-on more often. And hey, do your girls shout out things after your songs too?
Betsy: Yes, J.B. never did get past 39, did he, nor Willie Nelson, nor Sandra Dee. Well, not so sure about Sandra Dee but she popped into my head first. Were you ever Sandra Dee crazy? No, you’d be too young for that. Maybe you were an Olivia Newton John fan? Karen Carpenter? Suzie and the banshees?
Liara: Ding, ding, ding, the ringing bell of genuine creative energy goes off!
I hope it goes well in the studio tomorrow (which I know it will,) and that you like and can use the music (which you may or may not, but at least I’ll be giving it my all and thank God for George, he is a dream to work with and creative too.)
Dot: You still humming the tune or have my happy-sad melodious strains been replaced by Zepelin, the Stones or the Clash since the decades between when you read this and this morning? It’s always the last song you hear, right that keep on a playing in your head. Sadly for me it was the “Austrian Drunk-Driving Tune,” I was just listening to.
Now Lynn, when will we get to hear your mellifluous vocals? I know you are hiding them somewhere.
Altho, those for your blind reading? Are they available to listen to on the Net? I envision your voice as something of a cross between Meryl Streep just after she has been to an envigorating opera and Bette Middler on a quiet summer’s eve near Nantucket.
Talon: Ahhh, shucks. What can I say after such lovely words? I’d rather sing you a little tune than use mere prose here so please for such a joyous occasion so, picture the below lines to the melody from Evergreen. Okay, here I go.
Talon, nice as a summer morn
Talon, so glad that you were born
One blogger who’s twenty-nine
I have found so fine.
Did you like it??
Patrica: Another “ahhh shucks” coming at ‘cha. Thank you! I don’t remember a whole lot about 39 either, other than I had the idea for that song, Kelly turned 1, my hair looked good one day, I lost my favorite dark-blue t-shirt and I ripped my best pants on a barbed wire fence while running from the law. But I got away, hee-hee! I stole a dozen donuts from the corner store.
Lane: From the brim to the dregs, it was a very good year. Just a passing year. La, da, da, da, da, da, da dee. And how does it feel to be 41? I cannot remember that either. I do remember 17 tho. Beatlemania, whoo hoo. And 27 was lovely. The best will be 67, tho.
Tammy: Well thank you so much, I am glad I could share via this technology we now take for granted. I will for sure share the new ones I’m writing, pieces of them anyway to inspire and test out on you guys.
GREAT to see you back again. I’ll pop over soon.
Evita: Well, I’ve never done a musical before but I think it needs 3 acts with some twists in the plot of course. There must be a dastard and a damsel and knight, but not too many characters, maybe 5 — 3 gals and 3 guys, Or 3 and 3 with more songs written for the guys. And a coffee shop where an Open Mike is performed. Hmnnnnn, I think more ideas are coming to light. THANKS for your inspiration.
Oh, Karyn: I do not expect you or anyone to buy my CD, you are so kind. I just have to keep some links up to seem all official and musician-like, bla-bla-bla.
But you are so sweet! Please spend your money on peanut butter and pancakes!! And be careful of falling in to that housefold, I hear it can be a real challenge to get out again.
Sara: Yep, I am totally about “getting there,” you hit that one on the head. So slooooowly, as a snail mostly, but wandering in a general direction of somewhere or something called Comfort Zone Expansion. And we’ll see where it takes me. I might play the main gal in the show, do you think ? I do love being out from behind the guitar, in my show-tune-y way.
Guys, THANK YOU for not only your visits, but your commenting joyousness that goes straight to my core of cores. I’d be plenty blue without you. And that’s truly true!
xoxoxo

Yeah, I said goodbye to my thirties in March. (a href=”http://cinderbridge.blogspot.com/2009/03/birthday-for-late-bloomer.html” target=”_blank”>It felt weird. It still does.
I had a good plan for transitioning, though. In my mind, I was never 39. I jumped straight from 38 to 40. I spent a whole year telling myself I was 40 before it actually happened.
So now I’m 40 for the second year in a row.

Oh noes, I just erased my long comment. Let me cry and start again…
Lynn: Then maybe you are a cross between Grace Slick and Karen Carpenter? With a twist of Pia Zadora?
Thanks Barbara: I may be requesting audience participation on plot twists.
Jeanne: We always have full permission to kiss any number good-bye ad infinitum .
Talon: Many say I look not a day over 79!
Cath: Sorry to have touched a fresh nerve. Did you feel “old” when you turned 30?
Well, imagine yourself at 50 or 60, etc… and see how young you are now. Actually, age matters not one wit in most things.
Lance: Ern, Wisconsin would be my dream place to visit.
Do they have any quaint little b&bs there? Or 5-star hotels??
Vered: Thanks. 5% inspiration — 95 % perspiration!
Ching Ya: If my old computer had not crashed I’d e-mail you the chart. E-mail me your physical adresss and I’ll send you a hard-copy! It’s in Db, but just C with a capo on 1!
Cinderkeys: I can never figure out that code thing either, I tried to fix it for you but no luck. Ah, to be a mere 40 again, you are but a babe.
Snag: Yep, still playing every Friday morning at Kelly’s school, but not too regular with the guitar. But fortunately — I avoid dish-washing for my art!
Ahh, G: nothing like a good wedgie song to get you through the work-a-day. And the sugar song is fun too.
Hey, Sheila: Glad you liked it! I do feel freer to perform out from behind the guitar. Thanks so much. The venue for that show was at the auditorium at Casa De Luz here in Austin.
Glenn: Yes, and you will get to see kelly grow up here before your very eyes, shoudl you stick around.
Wade: Well BB just has a minde of his (her?) own.

Frenstripp, I take my cue for age, and who really cares anyway, from this sagest of words, and I quote
“You are old, father William,” the young man said,
“And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head –
Do you think, at your age, it is right?
“In my youth,” father William replied to his son,
“I feared it might injure the brain;
But, now that I’m perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again.”
“You are old,” said the youth, “as I mentioned before,
And you have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door –
Pray what is the reason for that?”
“In my youth,” said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
“I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment — one shilling a box –
Allow me to sell you a couple?”
“You are old,” said the youth, “and your jaws are too weak
For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak –
Pray, how did you manage to do it?”
“In my youth,” said his fater, “I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life.”
“You are old,” said the youth, “one would hardly suppose
That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose –
What made you so awfully clever?”
“I have answered three questions, and that is enough,”
Said his father. “Don’t give yourself airs!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
Be off, or I’ll kick you down stairs.”
pffffttttt, for 39 ! and any number with 9 at the end.

Heather: Thank you. Again, happy birthday, you young ‘un!
Robbi: Who wrote that?? Sounds like the father is a yogi. Or yoda.
Lance: I get it now. Duh, Jannie! West-ERN. Good one!! Viroqua, Wi, population 4500, home to “The Driftless Region of Southwest Wisconsin” And the 3-chimney rock formation. Stellar! I love learning new stuff like that. Looks like a super-great place to call home.
Snag: You a December baby, I take it??
Trey: Hey, no kissing up required — you’re already ‘waaay on my inside track! Broadway? Who the heck knows? I’m trying to keep this kinda small, the show. That’s what a buddy who does this kind of stuff here in Austin suggests. Keep it small to start with, the fewer characters the better.
Karl: Hey, great to see you again!! Yes, the PLOT — there’s the challenge for me. And who are the characters? Moreover — what happens to them? Where are the surprises? What makes us fall for them? Or hate them? I’m thinking 3 gals and either 1 or 2 guys, and a fictional guy who hangs on the wall. Yep, initially I’ll probably play the protagonist, or 1 of them if there is no main player.
toodles.
