A Beautiful Jumble
Just Good Stuff | Posted by Jannie on 15 January 2010 @ 6:40 AM 66 Comments
Our beautiful jumble of loose photos could no longer be denied.
The pictures called ever louder and more insistently each time I approached their general vicinity, “Jannie, Jannie, help us. Sort us. LOVE us. Please, Jannie. Pleeeeease.”
Photos, photos, photos. All those pre-digital photos.
Something had to be done! But what?
And how?
Think, Jannie, think!!
Baskets? I had those 3 baskets full of CDs I used to keep in my car. Could they be the right size for photos?
Yes! Even 5 x 7s fit perfectly into each of the 6 compartments. Excellent. I ousted the CDs to a cardboard box and got busy.
I brewed more green tea.
I cranked the Bach to 11.
So many loose photos. But luckily quite a bit of time — I was taking a break from the child’s room re-do. I was a woman relatively in control of my own domestic destiny.
I labeled each basket compartment as thus,
1. Family
2. Friends
3. Kelly (ones of her alone)
4. Texas House (remodel)
5. Trips
6. Misc.
I was kicking organizational buttock!! I was singing. I was dancing as I sorted.
The Child arrived on the scene and was intrigued. She poured over photos that hadn’t been seen in years. She was a good help at sorting. (And a good sort at helping!)
From the depths of the broken-down laundry hamper she excavated the stack of greeting cards from her First Birthday! She read them bemusedly, nostalgic for and “missing the good old days.” Seriously — that’s what she said!
Little-by-little, with joyous fury, the photos found their way into the correct basket categories, as the broken-down laundry hamper was emptied, then lovingly stomped on and tossed to the curb.
As I post this today, my photo-organizing is far from finished, but the lion’s share is well on its way towards something mysteriously beautiful, unfolding like life itself with incredible lightness of being.
Ironically, the photo I was searching for in the first place — one of Dad helping Jim cut out the wall between the old living room and the old master bedroom 12 years ago — has not turned up yet! Where, oh where, can it be? Maybe in one of the albums in the bedroom closet, but I doubt it.
And all the photos of Jim and me in the snow in Canada 18 years ago? Hmmn. There must be another box of pictures somewhere.
Somewhere, yes.
All to be revealed in the great fullness of time.
Meantime… please sample below one of the Family photos unearthed during this organizing frenzy – a shot from Kelly’s Christening day I didn’t even know we had!

How ’bout you and your photo organization? Anything to tell?

You touched on something here that everyone can relate to. Now that our daughters are grown and living on their now, now that iphones take tons of pics and digital cameras create thousands of images so that you never have to accept a poor snapshot again, we have very little photos to sort. When Melva and I got married I was a very organized sort who had 10 albums from the past. She had a huge box full of loose photos going back 10 years. I took a few weeks, sorted it all, bought new albums, and mounted everything. The girls went through the albums pulling out photos for whatever reasons, and throwing back into the original box, or in divers piles under their dirty panties and bras in their trashed out rooms. So I back off and let go of the need to organize memories. That is my sad tale. Now we just skype the grandchildren several times a week and are happy to see their faces as we talk; video phones, what a world.

A lovely family photo and a lovely cherished baby! I set out to put all my photos sequentially into photo albums once – a sitting on the floor project with music going and curious cats. Abandoned after a while and now there is a big basket of photos shoved in a corner of my closet. You inspire me for a future project. Now about organizing those recipes…

Hi Jannie! Oh Lordie, I can relate to this! Shame on mom here – I think the last update I did putting photo albums together was twenty years ago – egads! With the exception of the photos from 2001-07 of my son in the army, the rest could fill several laundry tubs IF and when I ever dig them all out of closets and their hiding places! I’m relieved the last year or so they all get put on the computer – now if I just knew how to GET to them, haha !

Sheila!! Well, I’m “getting there” and having such a blast finding pictures I didn’t even know we had. And YESS!!! You are so glorious in your commenting firstness here today. Congrats.
Scanning, yes. I do not have a scanner but luckily the library is close. Now… if I can just find out how to scan to get max res. The one of Jim I did in the “nursery corner” the other day is fuzzier than what I actually scanned. Any scanning advice?
Teahouseblossom! I would love to come and pore over your pix and sort them! Could there be green tea and donuts involved? And maybe wine at 5:00 p.m. ?
yes, that photo is so sweet. I do have others of the day, of course, but this sweet shot was a nice surprise to see. I just love my satin shoes, don’t you?? I got them on sale.
Glenn! “went through the albums pulling out photos for whatever reasons, and throwing back into the original box” I can relate to that. in our albums I have many blank spots, from photos being removed. And digital is incredible, as you say never a reason for a bad shot — just preview, delete and try again. Isn’t it just so great to be alive in these technological times??! i do not Skype. Have you any tips for me, in case I do start Skyping?
Lynn!! That sounds like a wonderful way to sort — with wine and music. it reminds me of a scene in a Shirley MacLaine movie where she was sitting on floor amidst all her old photos too. Can’t remember which movie. Maybe you’ve seen it? I just love Shirley MacLaine, do you? What a great actress. Recipes, huh! Good luck. Do you have a box of loose recipes too?
Dot!! You know, your living room post has inspired me to do be brave and do these Before and Afters, thank you. What kind of events are your albums of? The running of the bulls in Spain? You went to that a few times, did you not?
‘m not sure if our photos will go into albums, or what. It is still evolving. And I still have to find those missing ones — that’s the thing about enlarging our house from 1400 sq feet to about 2700 ft — more space, nooks and crannies to put stuff.
Thanks, Hilary!! Kelly will love the UK when we finally get her over there. Of course, she’s always had a traveler’s spirit and fancies herself quite underprivileged to not have seen Europe and other places yet. old slides can be a lot of fun! What is a box camera? Is that one you made yourself? yes, little crinkly wrinkly Kelly those first couple days. tjhat’s one great thing about C-Section babies, they come out all plump and peachy. Enjoy your weekend too, Hilary — and yes more sorting for me today! On Wednesdays and Fridays this year Kelly stays to play with her school chums at “after-care” until 5:00, so Jannie gets nice long free days to herself then.
Suzen!! yes, “Getting to” the photos is the thing. 3 tubs, what a wonderful mom you are to have taken all those pictures! I remember my brother slightly chastising shutter-bug me when I was a teen for “wasting so many pictures,” but I’m glad I didn’t listen to him — it is so fun to look back and remember life via all the shots. And I bet someday you’ll pull out all those tubs and have a lot of good laughs, and perhaps shed a tear or two too!
xoxoxo
Talon!! At least you have things neatly labeled, mine are just a jumble i bet you have so many great shots, you with your artist eye. As i was writing up this post I did think of you and the loss of your recent digital photos, I know that is a heartbreak. It is lovely to look back tho, and I can certainly relate to the “getting lost” feeling. And you with four children — you must have a lot of pictures. Oh, yes, that dress — my best dressy dress, thank you, I’ve had for maybe 17 years! I do like it a lot too. I feel like a 40s movie star in it! And did you notice Kelly’s little foot sticking out? She was 10 months old then, and not a fan of anything on her feet, the gorgeous lace booties off as soon as they went on.
Jacqui!! I could never part with any of these pictures either. And I think that as soon as i post this i will get busy and try to find that other box — maybe even more than one box! funny how things accumulate over the years, and you find stuff you didn’t even remember you had! Do you have a scanner? Do you think you might post some of your favorite old shots on your blog?

And talking pictures – I am so impressed (well, except for that beer miss…I am having a hard time with that one). Jannie, you have all the cool toys. I want a camera like that – the one that takes the talking pictures. And then you have that other camera too – the one that takes pictures that play hide and seek with you (seems the pictures are winning…being well-hidden and all).
And you tossed a perfectly good laundry basket?? You do realize, don’t you, that would have been perfect for those mismatched socks. I’ll probably shed a tear in my *ahem* tea…

Cookie!! I guess I should do a separate post on her 4 (maybe 5) baby books not anywhere finished. (I bought 1 and was given 4 as presents.) Those could be up on my priority list for sure. It would be interesting to learn how many other readers are behind in that department too. Yet, that is a life “Should” and I have kicked “Should” from my midst. Do you catch yourself saying “Should” sometimes too??
Lynn!! I have a few tried and true recipes and my bestest cookbook is called “No Time To Cook.” Just amazing what great quality meals can be prepared in less than 30 minutes. And of course I’m so good with Stouffers’ microwave dinners!
And tossing a salad.
Paige!! Yay!! I’m proud of me too!! And where are those other photos?? Will be so much fun to get into those whenst they appear. Well, Paige I am afraid that laundry hamper, even if it had not gotten a big crack in the bottom, would only have held maybe a half inch of water for you to fetch from the creek. Tiled — oooo!! That is much excitement indeed. Looking forward to teh photo updates. Nonetheless, I have always liked that biga$$ed word too. And insofarasmuch. And spareribewithextrasauce.
Avani!! That trunk sounds like a true treasure fest. Mom has a trunk of ancient photos too. In the attic, I believe. Someday it will be a joy to pore over those with her and get them all labeled, not that the loved ones in the photos who have passed on will care, photos are always for the living and to pass on to the future generations, aren’t they? And I want you to know, Avani — “not that the loved ones in the photos who have passed on will care” may well be the dumbest thing I’ve ever written on this site — so why am I laughing so at that?? And I too want to print out my favorite digital ones for display, so far they are only on my blog.
Carla!! The hardest part was getting started. And I was looking for that one particular photo for a series of before and after shots I’ll be posting of our hose remodel here. Then realizing the baskets would work, made a super-fun way to begin! It’s working well for me. Good luck on YOUR photos project and have fun!!
Vered!! Well, it’s coming together quite nicely, and the baskets are so pretty, of course. I am not exactly sure where I will veer next in the organizing, but I’ll get it figured out. I do love the convenience of online storage too.
Jingle!! Thanks! It is all so magical, yes, I am dancing and tripping lightly on air having found old photos and cavorted down memory lane. And OF COURSE, Kelly First, tied for first with Jim, actually.
But given the 5 choices on your lovely post, fame was it for me. Whoo — majestic, I like that. Blogging is indeed majestic, with all the love and fun to share. Did I ever mention I really really like blogging???
Lance!! I only recently started drinking green tea, supposed to be all good for me and stuff, and even if it’s not — the mere thought that it could be good makes me happy. So was it a chicken or the egg of green tea that come first? Now Lance, this was a project I was working on mostly in the daytime. Even I have my standards for beer-drinking hours. And I don’t think I ever told you, but beer really messed me up allergy-wise for some years, so I stopped drinking it. Then a couple years ago in Canada at some beering event or other (at Church perhaps,) one was foisted upon me. So I drank it. And it was good. And my allergies had left me. I have also lost my allergies to cats and Mountain Cedar. But sadly, not to doing dishes. Oh Lance, that laundry hamper was cracked in several places (notice any tape in the pictures?) I’d go retrieve it but the men in the big truck came and took it today. I do have a smashed plastic bucket you might like, tho? It’s blue with a yellow handle.
K! Once I got the categories narrowed down it was Smooth Photo Sailing for me!! Sounds like you are doing beautifully with your photo organizing. I don’t scrapbook either, but some people do such beautiful work with that. Wow, a Uhaul box!! Must be some pile of photos. Well, if intimidating get some baskets — or shoe boxes. Or a big glass of wine and don’t even worry about it.
xoxo

Dear Standards Woman,
Well…I have to admit, I drink green tea, too…from time to time. Started that to help the environment…it being “green” and all. Oh…and I’ve went to green beer too. I’m all about helping the environment. And…I’ve started to eat my pears green, before they turn yellow (it really does help the environment I’ve been told). So, you were allergic to beer? That happened to me once too. Weird, huh! I cured myself of that beer allergy by going back to mother earth. “Root” beer. Made it myself, from the tree root of a sugar maple tree. Sweet and yummy…although I did get some dirt mixed in there. Been cured of allergies ever since.
Oh…and the egg came first. Dr. Seuss helped us with that one. Green (tea) eggs and ham. And…there’s one more way for me to help the environment. Thanks Doc Seuss!!!
The bucket!! Can I have the beat up old bucket?? That would be so cool! You know, our school color are blue and yellow. My kids would think I was the coolest dad around (umm…okay maybe that’s a stretch…). I could wear it to all the sporting events – I see a new career! School mascot – with that bucket on my head! Hi Jannie – I love the wonderful feeling that organization can bring. It makes me wonder why I let things get cluttered or disorganized to begin with. Isn’t January the best time of year to get into an organized frame of mind? Resolutions kind of go with that. I love your system. It keeps the printed photos accessible so they can be handled and exclaimed over – something an album or digital storage kind of suppresses. Love Kelly’s remark about the good old days, too!

Well, Betsy!! The bin that filled up the highest is the Family one, next highest Friends, Texas House! Then Kelly — I do have a lot of duplicate photos tho, so I’ll sort them out and give them away (in IRL letters, eventually.) And now that I’ve begun Wednesday “photos-only” posts (with a little commentary) it’s so wonderful to have all these older ones to dip into. The organizing itself is still an evolution, but it is fun.
And Betsy, I’d say the dancing swirl of our days gets things all unorganized in the first place?

Most of ours growing up dissappeared to be cut out n used for collages which were gifts for my parents- Sometimes I make them for my girls now using colorcopies so don’t have to cut the originals.
You need a good place to store negatives. I have binder sheets for some, but most I keep with the prints or contact sheets (thumbnails) n CD if came with it in those ugly yellow envelopes. But I write on the outside what’s inside the envlp.

Tammy!! Yep, she will look through the baby picture albums and say everso reminicently “Good times… good times.” Ahhhhh, full of nuggets indeed that one. I make exceedingly wonderful pancakes, in all their various shapes and sizes! Do you like pancakes??
Ari!! Is that gravatar new? Great one! Pictures, picture, pictures. I know the real memories are in the heart, but I like having all these pictures. “rewinding the present to relive the past,” now that is a deeply poetic way to put that!! Love that! So glad you popped by, thanks!
Mama Z!! Well, it was actually more of an accident how I ended up using the baskets. Stepping stones along this organizational trail I’ve been skipping down of late.
Cordie!! I notice Talon above mentioned acid-free boxes, that bears looking into. I suppose the sun is the worse photo deteriorator? Luckily the unearthed ones have all been away from UV rays, but your advice on preserving is very well taken — thanks!!
Topsy Tweeter! Hello!!
Cinderkeys!! I love digital because, well obviously, you can keep shooting until you get the photo you like. Saves money! And it’s neat to be able to crop and resize pix, even add light and contrast, paint out zits,
and upload to sites! And you can get a fairly decent camera for a little over a hundred bucks! Ha — you were a precocious one, weren’t you!? Funny.
Sorry, guys!! I’ll have to respond to the rest of these comments later, have to get Kelly off to King Fu now!
xoxo

Wow — you’re amazing! I’m still trying to organize my clothes closets. (Someone on “Oprah” said we should toss things we haven’t worn in a year … I am so behind!) But you’ve inspired me to start thinking about those boxes of old photos I’ve got scattered all over, not to mention the disorganized albums. Cheers!

Hi Snaggle!! Funny little ’spression on her, yes, getting pretty bored with all the picture taking, I do think. I bet you have boxes and boxes of stuff. I did uncover one more storage box of pictures today, haven’t peered into it too much, I have to do this in stages, does drain the brain as the hours go on. Still more pix somewhere. I swear the basket fairies are looking out for me, put more baskets to use today. I’ve got some 8×10s too , but I found something great for those. Not too many over-sized stuff as you the artiste would have. And I know I have a thickish envelope of old family pix I pilfered, make that ” borrowed from Mom, maybe 10 years ago, as I copied them and made albums for both my brothers. Sadly, Harry’s house burned 7 or 8 years ago and he lost everything. Been meaning to do him up a new album when those pix turn up. And they will!! Anyhoo, I plan on scanning all my favs, or taking pix of the pix, and backing them up, so I may not be as good with my negatives as I should. You are right!! So msny pix, so little time.
Winson, are you the famous mop and bucket Winson?? I’d recognize you anywhere!!
Jewel!! Sounds like you’ve got a wonderfully creative man there! I remember Jim and I shared our dinner table on our Caribbean cruise with a guy who did crochet and needlepoint. And his wife was a lumberjack ( but that was okay– she worked all night and slept all day .) Silly Jannie. I must say, it’s a hoot dredging up all the photos for future posts!!
Fatibony!! You came back, yay!! Kelly was funny, she double- checked with me on every picture before placing it in the proper bin. And was amazed at how young her Mz and Pa had looked. What I’m doing is uploading my favs, and the rest, well , will more than likely go back into boxes, but covered, and perhaps even acid free.
Zeenat!! Yes cheeky Jsnnie, throwing people from trains, wasn’t that a nutty comment over at your place yesterday. I swear I don’t know what’ll I do with me as I get nuttier and older.
can your mom come and help me with mine.?? Facebook, funny you should mention- I do have a FB under my legal last name but I am going to be starting a new one under Jannie Funster. I would LOVE to see all your pix!! So I will search you out on that!! Whoo-hoo. Jannie Minx will see more of Zeenat’s world! Much love to you too.
Jingle!! Currently relaxed and smiling. Will be smiling even bigger with satisfaction when I hit post on this and head to dreamland. Did you know how super-famous my blog is getting in China??!!
Just kidding. But that would be a great market to tap into, they just love photos of fling bras. That’s wonderful about basketball do both your boys play? I’m not much of a basketballer at all. But I do like eating big sugary gumballs and storing things in baskets!! Beautiful philosophy. What we learn from the game and take to better our lives is always what matters. Bravo!! And I wonder what you did on your blog today?? I was off computer all day until now.
Friends, I know there are still two wonderful comments to answer, but I am barely able to keep my eyes open, so I’ll post this and seen you when I get back.
xoxo

That’s awesome you’re organizing photos and renovating rooms. Are you sure you don’t want to take a crack at getting my place so nicely organized???
Trust me. It could use the help!
Bringing along a firewood shipment would NOT be required. (Your mere presence would be a huge gift all by itself, of course)!

Hi Jannie,
Isn’t it amazing how taking pictures has changed? I remember having to buy film and being careful not to expose it to light or else the pictures would be ruined. Times sure have changed!
Cool on organizing the pictures in such a manner. That is a great idea. I loved how Kelly looked back at the birthday cards and referred to that time as “the good old days”. That is so cute!
Thank you for answering my question about the green tea. I have not heard of Verana before…maybe I have seen it but don’t remember it. There are so many teas now…I lose track of all the companies. I will check it out and let you know!

Jannie, that is so funny, the quote that you used! I was expecting it to be all motivational, silly really since I hadn’t posted any comment on your blog that was motivational…ha ha. I laughed at loud when I saw the quote you posted! LOVE IT!

I love a good dark beer, but it has to be on tap. If not on tap then bottle beer and I prefer a lighter beer, that is in color, not calories! Cuz if I’m gonna drink beer, I’m gonna DRINK beer!
There used to be a bar in Orlando called Hubs and they had 250 beers on tap. We used to go there once a week and try a different beer each time. I fell in love with the tucher hefe vice I guess that is a german beer, uh, maybe, I was drinking at the time. I just loved to say it over and over again, and drinking it over and over again was fun too! he he

Jim, THE Jim Gaudet!! howdy pardner. How’s the Costa Rica treating you today? Thinking I’ll scan just the ones I want to unleash on the world so sweetly unsuspecting. Any scanning advice as to dpi and best size?
Cindy L !! Amazing? I AM AMAZING??? For more than just my stunning prose and scintillating dinner conversation? I must admit there is bunch of clothes in the back of my closet that haven’t seen the light of day or cloak of night for maybe 123 years. I mean 12 years, oy!
Cheers to you Cindy LaFerle!
deere brudder..hi blue bunny speeking to yoo. mummy said we are not teh best at organie, organize, sorting out our tings. so dont be sadd about that. i not hellping my jannie wit tteh fotos at all. i luvs yoo brudder!! wen you koming to visit up wit mee??
Jeanne!! How cool that your lovely comment arrives swift on the heels of BBB!! My Dear, I’ll be there tomorrow, taking the double-red-eye, will meet you at the Starbucks in the Statue of liberty at 10:00. a.m. I’ll be the one in orange spandex and my powder blue MLK leg warmers. Be happy to help you organize all what needs it!! But I gotta fly out at 2:30 p.m. from JFK, okay??
Jingle!! I am living in the United States since 1009! I mean 1990!!! I am still an alien, but somewhat legally so. My spaceship is buried in the backyard (our little secret, okay??) I am not much of a sports fan either, but I do like the Jamaican bobsled team. And turtle races. Yes, I am often told I am a true thrill to behold in all my 128 facets of amazing-dom.
Happy Nadia!! I think I must’ve done another famous typo. That should have read Versana tea. I put in another 2 hours today on pictures, until Fred and Martha showed up with their margarita machine. The Margarita machine was empty, but still, when Fred and Martha show up it’s hard to get a word in edgewise, but a great education on how to fix lawnmowers and grow papayas. Anyway… on the green tea.. which one do you like? — and that will be my brand too.
Natalia!! You ARE a star, not only today, but every time you pop in here!! And… tucher hefe vice, when translated does that mean “touch the boss’ vice?” As I said to Lance above, I was allergic to beer for some years, perhaps from 1995 to 2005 – yikes! Thankfully that hell is a thing of the past, and I am able to tiptoe through the hops patch in any way I see fit. I like that Heinekin stuff and Sierra Nevada pale ale. Enjoy your reign as Quote Queen — you are IT!!
Yaya, dear OCD Yaya..
I thought one as organized as you would be touched deeply by this post offering. I am so kicking buttocks on organizing lately. Whoo-hoo.

Davina!! I have found a couple more small boxes of them. And did a lot more organizing over the weekend. I had to buck up and get it done, will do the reminiscing in the future.
J.D. You so funny!! And guess what ?? I have my 12 new song ideas now, gonna do a post of me singing all 12 on video, just the chorus snippet of each of them. Sooner, than later.
