Portrait Of The Artist At Age Four
The Pea | Posted by Jannie on 23 February 2010 @ 6:49 AM 52 Comments

Kids are such wonderful natural artists! And can be pretty prolific when given full reign to create whatever, whenever.
But if you save all their masterpieces, how do you organize them?
Anybody have any ideas for sorting / storing and / or displaying kids’ art?? And school papers? Oh, so very many school work papers since our little angel first entered the halls of academia at age 2. So much stuff collected over the years, I’m not sure what to do with it.

About the 3 pix in this post… For Mothers’ Day when Kelly was four, her pre-school teachers gave each of us a little album of our darlings at work and play. Sweet, eh!?

What does your “luckie” hat look like? I guess you must have a thousand pics of Kelly already, enough to fill a dozen albums. With our three daughters, the first one was photographed every ten minutes, the second one twice a day, and the third one felt left out cuz we just got tired of clicking; just another child, ho-hum. What you might do with the Artwork and special stuff that Kelly has, and will continue to create is to put it in scrapbooks, not for yourself, but to give to your grandchildren when Kelly gets around to presenting them to you. That might be fun. What was the latest award given to the mayor of Funsterville, the queen of Funsterland, our diva of dingaling, our very own and special Miss Jannie? By the way loved the wedding pic
you included last posting, even though it was too personal to let we Funsters gush over. Melva and I have been married 17 years this April.

Did you buy that new wallpaper yet?!? Take the best 10 from each year and let the rest go. I know it’s like taking off a right arm…but hey you may need to put on another addition if you don’t;)
FYI We took a zillion photos of our first…a couple each year of our second and every second with our twins;)

Once the kids were old enough, I let them go through the stuff I saved and see if they were interested in keeping any of it. Nope. (though they did enjoy the trip down memory lane). So I was ruthless and kept just a few things that brought up great memories for me and put them in a scrapbook. A few masterpieces are framed on the family photo wall and makes me smile ever time I see them.
Kelly is just the sweetest!!

I think you’re off to a good start Jannie. Take photos of it. Then store it in an artist’s portfolio case. That’s what I’d do. You could even frame them and hang them on the wall. That first one is a nice abstract.

Oh my goodness, Shakira, I thank you so much for an award. I look forward to honoring it, and the Kreativ Blogger from Jingle in future posts. Honest Scrap! You got it. Or, will have it, I mean!
Glenn!! Those scrapbooks sound like a lot of love. I’d like to try my hand at those one fine day. My lucky hat!! It’s blue felt, a bit of a cloche design. Has your hat ever been felt? Or do people mostly keep their hands off it? Happy upcoming anniversary!
Tess! No, on the wallpaper. Yes, on you’re awesome. The best 10 from each year, eh? And maybe roast spidie dogs over the open flames of the ones to sacrifice?
I guess with 4 kids one probably can’t save everything.
Lynn!! That does sound lovely. What a super- sweet mom, like her daughter. Was it artwork from one particular age, or spread out over your childhood? Will you perhaps share a bit of it on your blog?
Teahouseblossom !! Isn’t she so so cute? I must say with humble adoration. Thank you, Sweetie. And always great to see you!
Anne!! I love your story about the letter you wrote at age 10, then finding the book. What book was it? I have this vision of me one day sitting on the carpet, wine in hand, going through boxes and boxes of this stuff and wailing my eyes out. You know what I mean?
Talon!! That is so interesting that once they were older they had no desire to keep anything. I love your idea of the family photo wall with some of the masterpieces displayed there too. I have our hallway wall covered with her poster-size stuff, stuck up with pushpins. I have a feeling I’ll keep it all somewhere, somehow. Just one kid, eh. I probably will, knowing me.
Davina!! Yes, that first one is my favorite too. It’s here somewhere in a box or a bin. An artist’s portfolio case– ooo sounds fancy! And within the magical realm of true artistes, like yourself. You know what would be cool?! A whole wall of her stuff framed. Hmmnnn, is there enough wall space?
Dear Kelly daughter fan! Yep, that was indeed you. At age 4. And yes, you were absolutely, completely the cutest baby, and toddler !!! EVER!!!!!! Love your comments. And you!

We are struggling with the same dilemma. I have an attic full of artwork and crafts from my daughter. As the years go by, I notice some hold up better than others, so that helps with the weeding process, but I think as she gets older, she will have to start picking through them to find which ones to keep.

Hey Jannie. Those pics are adorable.
My Mum put together a folder for each of us containing all our best pieces of art over the years from when we were really little to right through high school. She then gave us our folders for Christmas. It was such a great gift to receive. We spent ages going through all the little drawings and paintings we’d done and much laughter ensued! My folder was 99% full of artwork pertaining to horses. Apparently I was obsessed.

Awesome, can’t wait for that post.
Jingle!! I have dropped my MWF schedule, so you’ll have to be on your toes to see when I post next.
I am feeling in a particularly creative phase lately so I’ll be blasting some posts out. If I’ve commented on someone’s post, it’s because I’ve read ALL the words in it. You betcha!!
Momisodes!! Does your attic get very very hot in the summer? That may cause some degradation in art quality. Our attic gets to about 140 degrees I imagine. We really don’t store much up there at all. Just some broken furniture we will probably never fix.
Kelly!! You commented last night from my iPhone in the car, and you did comment on this post earlier, but yes, prior to those 2 comments it had been a long long time in deed since I saw your gravatar here. But I’ll take any blog visits I can from you, and always very very appreciated!
Sami!! That was a super-wonderful Mum thing yours did. I am getting such amazing ideas from you guys on this. I just knew 200 heads were better than 1! Horses, eh? Are you still a horse woman?

With some kids you would run outta room to keep all their works of art. I have a suggestion:
Be picky about which ones you keep, for instance pick you favorite and let the artist pick their favorite. Rotate the art on the fridge.
And Never EVER let the artist see the discarded bin.
Be sure the work is signed and dated; heck why not write on the back why the artist likes this piece the best.
Store them just like photos in an album; or in your case an old broken laundry basket.
Oh and don’t forget bb, likes art too, you can decorate his/her borrow with some.

Hey Jannie,
I would make them into super fancy colorful paper airplanes! And you might think that would ruin this fine artwork? (and it is super fine! Kelly is an amazing artist!) No – it won’t ruin it! And think of all the fun you could have playing with that artwork. In fact, you would have a big enough fleet to rival that which Southwest Airlines has (of the big planes)! That’s it!! The artwork could be used to decorate the interior of the planes used by Southwest. The first one decorated would be called the Kelly-Flyer!
It’s brilliant, isn’t it!!!!

Aww, she’s so cute for the teacher too! Fun pics.
I saved the cream of the fingerpaint crop in with the school pics, n am down to only a few of their school things in boxes.
The suit-case like portfolio is a good idea for long-term storage, because light, age, insects, mice, ect. will ruin the artwork before long if not protected.
Most paper used is not “acid-free” n can only be expected to last in good condition from 10 to 20 years- so take good cam pics of them too at some point.

I do not have kids, so I’ve not yet had to find a way to do all of this. My Mom, however, is a master organizer so I will tell you her secret. She has a tote for each of us in the attic full of all of our creations. She’s got ones that are like file boxes, but a lot longer. She has folders hanging in them with grade numbers/preschool/what have you and in each folder are masterpieces (both artistic and literary, hehe) that we created that year. Hope it helps!

We used lots of the art work for wrapping paper. Some really lovely things we took pictures of and cut down to traditional notebook size and then put it into a notebook.
As each of the girls gets their own home, we will give them the plastic tubs of their school day treasures. I really only saved about 20% of their work. I am also working on getting their health records on computer, because they all seem to need their own lifetime records everywhere they go….more important than the artwork.
I was the third child and my parents did not have a camera when I was born. I have almost 0 childhood pictures and no artwork or baby book…I did not want my kids to not have something

That Kelly, she’s got those artistic talents, just like you. I don’t know if I’d save every piece she makes, but definitely keep some so you can pass them onto her when she gets older. How fun will it be to show them to her kids someday, too.
P.S. My first thought when I saw the photos was, “I can’t believe she didn’t get any paint on that beautiful dress.”.

Wow, did we ever have fun in The Woods yesterday, setting up Kalyani’s fuzzy pants tent for the Renaissance Fair!
Paige!! I have a feeling I may cull a lot. This… “Never EVER let the artist see the discarded bin.” THAT is possibly the soundest parenting advice I’ve seen in a while. I’d say instead of a broken-down laundry hamper, maybe binders with those plastic pockets for the 8.5 x 11 stuff would work great! Thanks a bunch for your suggestions!
Vered!! You and the others are giving me strength to throw away in this, thanks! I appreciate the parent input.
Lance!! What you say is so funny and reminds of of Kelly in the library a couple weeks ago, shooting me little airplanes with notes on them from her computer across the table. She (AND YOU!!) CRACK me up to no end. How’d I get so lucky??
Audra!! Ahhh, I love the sentiment in your first sentence. I am trying to keep it (get it?) artsy around here. I do like looking at pretty photographs too. Thanks for your input! I will totally check out Hobby Lobby and ask what they have for art storage. Any excuse to be in that store works for me! Tho, I’ve been a Good Jannie and have not darkened their doors since Dec 31st with my 50% off coupon!
J.D.!! Thanks, Kind Sir! “Rustic” was totally my goal – so glad you noticed, it’s in the warm lighting, I think? Funny, I have noticed lately a lot of my pix to kind of go with my blog’s colors — am I nuts, or what!? (Don’t answer that!)
Lorie!! Happy 33 years ago yesterday. how wonderful!! I bet you remember your wedding day like it was just yesterday. Thanks YOU for dropping by HERE. I just love meeting and getting to know new blogging buddies.
Cinderkeys!! Hey! If you have any of your childhood art left, you could either scan or photograph it and post it on your blog!! This is an amazing technology we have at our fingertips these days to share. I feel so lucky to blog.
Jannie!!
Hilary!! Kelly is very creative in many ways, as kids are. She paints, writes songs, writes funny creative stories, some of the latter which I will scan and post here. Yes, with all the amazing suggestions here, i too am sure I have hit many pots of gold as to storing her precious art. Ahhhh, how sweet an idea to present your godchildren with all those cards – now that’s sweet love!! Yeah, how about Kelly’s avatar! She drew it on a piece of note paper at the library, I scanned it, e-mailed it to me and at home she painted in the red with MS Paint. She’d been after me for WEEKS to get her own gravatar. What a funny sweet girl – always with her own ideas on things!! NA yes, commenting on her own life — ain’t she something else!!
Gotta take a little break to powder my nose!

I love your edited pictures. How are you doing that?

Snaggle!! The teacher who devised that Mothers Day plan, Miss Becky, was so sweet and loving, really a great teacher. Very artistic too. ‘Cream Of The Crop” sounds like the way I’ll veer towards too. I am grateful for y’all’s input, I will for sure be looking into some sort of storage “suitcase” or folio, or something. Scanning and saving on disk might be good too. Yeah, I doubt much of her paper is acid free, except the little 6×6 ones they do watercolor on at school. Thanks, Sweet Snaggle!
Natalia!! “A big box-like picture frame? Like one of those, oh what do they call those… shadow boxes?? Is that what you mean? That dos sound very very nice. Yes, it is crazy how much artwork piles up. But that is for sure a sing of a happy child. Creating comes from soul deep. And we should never stop creating!!!
Mama Z!! I LOVE the idea of laminating!! A nice matte or semi-matte lamination would be great. “And tearfully pitch the rest.” You are so so so so so so funny, Mama Z! And I bet you’ve always been this way — thankfully.
Julie!! LOVE your pretty-pretty gravatar! I really like the idea of your mom’s filing system — grade level, preschool, what have you. That makes me feel much less guilty for not having noted the date on each and every piece of Kelly’s art, but surely I can figure out basically what year she created each in — or give a good guess. (after all, she’s only 8 yet, I think I can piece it all together, somewhat.)
ulie — that helps WAY MORE than you know, thanks so very extra much!! THANKS!!!!
Patricia!! Why does it not surprise me that you have wonderful ideas I will for sure use! Wow, save the best, and use the rest for wrapping paper, and for larger presents maybe tape 2 or 4 sheets together. LOVE the idea of reducing some to notebook size also! Hmmn, and so practical about the health records, I have not thought about making a copy of Kelly’s– even tho her doctor has it on file too, it might not be a bad idea to scan her record and save it. Cool!! You are such a great mom!!!!!
Sheila!! Ahhhh, how sweet about framing their first finger paintings — what a super mom!! Yes, I was about 110 lbs when we got married, now I range from 120 to 125 lbs! I loved being skinny but it was so much freaking work, and time has raised my set point (And of course I always look slimmer from the side – seriously! That’s just the way God made me!)
Caity!! Thanks, I love the 3 pix too. And her art here. As to your comment… But we CAN make life that simple, can’t we!?! Finger painting. Macaroni sculptures. Snow men. Sand angels.
Funny how our minds grow away from that.
Hi Dear Kimmi!! From all your wonderful comments I am thinking save the favorites stored from something I get at Hobby Lobby (with a deep coupon, of course!) frame some, reduce some for scrapbooks, use some for gift wrap and “tearfully toss the rest.”
Hi Barbara!! I think all kids really do have artistic talents, then some do not keep up with them as much they get older. See, my comment directly above this one as to how i plan on saving her art. And yes, how in the world did she not end up with paint on that sweet little dress??? I have no idea. But today most of her school clothes have paint stains on them. She likes the “artist feel” of them!!
Jannie!!
Karyn!! Wonderful suggestions!!! Sounds like our family is going to have so much fun going through her papers — I especially like the idea of my husband being involved in the plan, a wonderful family sharing experience. (I’m all teary-eyed now.) Oh, the Paint edited pictures?? The ones in the post of Kelly in the Beauty Shop? Is that what you mean? If so, you just use the “color picker” to take a sample of the area next to whatever you want to paint out, then use the little pencil for each pixel, or the paintbrush for a larger swath. it is something you just have to keep experimenting with and see what works — and you get better at it as you go! Oh, and thanks, I’ll be sure to tell Kelly you love her gravatar!! She drew it herself.

K!! Coffee table books — THAT sounds amazing!! When one of the teachers at Kelly’s school left last year they presented her with one such book, made from all digital photos. I bet it’s the same idea. Cool!!
Jingle!! Fire! River!! Of course — so simple now that I know the answers!!
Yep, see you soon!
Tammy!! So sweet of you to pop in and greet me and my bloging manigir!! I completely understand your circus — hope your studies are going well, which I am sure they are because you are committed to it!
Hey, Cookie!! Yes, as I delve deeper into online and Real Life (now seriously putting my nose to the olde songwriting grindstone for my next 12 tunes,)I feel that if I put up a photo once in a while with comments closed, none of us will die over it!
I hope we all will survive, anyway! I have a more-or-less systematic way of getting over to enjoy reading your blogs (in the order that comments come in here) so occasionally closing comments frees up my heart, soul and mind to keep up with blogging in a very joyful way for me. I’ll see how it goes, anyway.
Snaggle!! Your bubble answer is uncannily similar to the one I gave, which was “A fragile balloon” What the heck was I thinking with that silly guess!? Yep, I anticipate closing comments only once a week on average — I hope we will all survive it!?!?
It really helps me keep up better with all things, with a smile in my heart. And I like keeping a smile in my heart whenever I can!!
Chris!! A “Cyber-Neo-Post-Impressionist.” You are one of my favorite souls on the Net! You make me laugh so much. And to think that humor and wit is bundled in with all your other good stuff, the people helping stuff, makes me happy to be on this planet. Even more happy than I already am to be here, I mean!
Thomma Lynn!! Yes, I love how the colors Kelly chose work so well together, I would’ve never thought to combine those. My fave is the first one in this post. I guess that’s why she is the visual artist and I the beer swilling donut muncher!
Ching Ya!! Yes, but since Kelly says she will never leave us or get married – I guess I will have her here forever to take and post pictures of until I am too old to hold the camera!!
Just kidding, of course! I know she will fly one day. As she must. And I just LOVE your impression of her first photo!!! I see it now, just as you describe it! The curtain blowing in the breeze, a tall vase – wow! That’s what’s so cool about modern art, one can interpret in one’s own way. Oh, and thanks for the wedding day comment — so sweet of you!
Hey BK!! I wonder if Kelly would even remember what she was painting, or even if in fact, she was meaning for things to be actual objects — or just having fun with the joy and beauty of color? It was over half her life ago!!
With love to all.

The best tip for savings kids’ artwork that I’ve heard is from an organizing show on TV, and that is to save the originals of the best ones, and scan or photograph the rest so that you “have” them, but don’t have to save the whole thing.
