(Amber, Suzie, Me, Kelly: Kelly’s 5th birthday.)
Hey, guess were I’m off to this week??
To Deep Songwriting Zone! Well, starting tomorrow — ’cause today I’ll be hanging out with the 3 beautiful people above, plus little Emily.
Songs – time to focus on my next 12!
Give or take a title or two, the next ones are…
1. Will You Come See Me In Nova Scotia?
2. Everybody Cries Sometime
3. Goin’ Down To The River
4. Love To Spare
5. Are You Ready For Love?
6. Love Will Be The Answer
7. You Could Love Me Good
8. Keepin’ It Simple
9. Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself (Save That Job For Somebody Else!) ![]()
10. Let’s Drink Up The Stars
11. Sadder Than The Ocean
12. Will You Miss Me?
Alas, in deep quiet songwriting mode from Tuesday to Friday (Kelly will be packed off to gymnastics day-camp) I probably won’t be getting around to your blogs as much as I’d like to – the thought of which pains me. I am not a fan of missing a single word of your posts. And if I’m not answering your comments here in writing this week, please know I’ll be answering each of you in my heart. And smiling in your general direction.
All that being said…
It’s Give-Away Week here!!! Four gifts each day — including one of my cds daily! And on Friday – THREE of my cds, plus 3 other gifts.
(For a complete list of all the prizes this week, please see the end of this post.)
How will I be picking winners? Funny you should ask!
Each night, before I lay me down to sleep, (about 10:00 Texas Time,) I’ll read the comments and pick the daily winners based on whoever leaves a comment that touches me deepest as to why they would like a particular item. And I’ll leave a comment saying who won what. Sound fair? (Subjectively fair??)
Are ya excited??
Really excited??
Let’s go!!
Today we have on offer…
1. “The Apple That Astonished Paris,” Billy Collins “first real book of poetry” after 2 chapbooks and numerous publications of his work in well-known reviews. (I actually will be giving away all 7 of my remaining Billy Collins this week. What good is his brilliance to me, gathering dust on my shelves?) (This book is in excellent condition.)
(Sorry ’bout the fuzziness of this next photo, back cover of the book. The fuzziness it’s a long story, one I might tell you when the moon is in just the right phase.)
2. “Blogging For Dummies.” Released 2008. A goodie! (Book in good condition.)
3. Marilyn Monroe notecards with envelopes (one envelope minisculey larger than the other 3, but still highly serviceable.)
2 each of 2 poses. (Cards practically new!)
4. One of my “I Need A Man” cds. (Brand-new in shrink wrap.)
So, anything sound enticing? And why?
Please note: You are ALL welcome to comment on any and all item(s) !
Have fun, and I’ll see you in a comment here tonight!! Whoo-hoo!!
xoxo

You’re forgiven about leaving us in the lurch this week, if you promise to write a song that includes everyone who reads/comments on your blog. Ha! Can you imagine what such a song would sound like? Oh boy… It might be rather dramatic in some ways. Hmm, maybe that’s better saved for a future blogging conference. Good luck and have fun!
You’ll be missed, but never far from our thoughts!

Weelll, and the incredible Jannie Funster Giveaway Week is upon us, heavily upon us, and we are so dazzled it is hard to keyboard, think, or pee. The titles are off the hook for your songwriting week adventure. Looking at the prizes gleefully, I would set my elderly sights on the BILLY COLLINS poetry book. I keep a list of poets who I haven’t read yet, or featured on my site, and Billy Collins is on my list. So to get a book of his stuff right out of the gate would both enhance my book shelf poetry section and kick start my interest in him. The book jacket comments seem to portray him as a cross between Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and Robert Bly. As you know I have picked up the poetry gauntlet over on
APPLEHOUSE, and it is pretty frustrating to submit
my bleeding heart yet muscular poetics to Lynne’s hot red pencil of correction. Too bad our written words are like our children, that we personalize other’s responses to them. Anyway, I have two I NEED A MAN CD’s, so perhaps if I touch you deeply, or irritate you enough, ole Billy C can find his way to the north woods. It must be strange when Kelly goes off to camp. Is this her spring break too?

I would really love to have that Billy Collins book for several reasons. One is, you have consistently recommended him, to the point that I checked him out and he is indeed that rarest of birds, a truly original poet. Also, while I read it, I can mutter to myself and to Bosco the Wonder Dog, “I write better than this guy…I write better than this…”. Thirdly, it would always make me think of Jannie Funster, and that is a good thing. Lastly, fork over the book or the bunny gets it. Wait, strike that. Nice bunny. I don’t know what came over me. Okay, here is the final and most compelling reason. I will take the book with me to Danny’s Coffee Shop and also mention said book in a future poem in which one of the characters will be reading it. Uh huh, how ya like me now?

I recently read a book about Marilyn Monroe behind the scenes. It almost haunts me how similar I am to her, except my life is much more ordinary, and definetly less tragic. There was one bit of trivia in the book I found terribly ironic however: Did you know that the woman who singly sums up sexiness for most of America was unable to truly enjoy sex because of her mental and emotional torment? She couldn’t climax, no matter who she was with. And she died alone, all by herself, of a drug overdose. Truly tragic. (Marilyn Monroe postcards)

that book of poetry, yep. I need a new book of poetry as I just finished one and I hate to choose new poets on my own (on Amazon) ’cause usually they suck… but when someone recommends a poet or it is one that I already know I am rarely disappointed. So as I already ‘know’ Collins and you are recommending him too I know it will be a sure fire winner!
thanks for the chance

WINNERS FOR THIS POST ARE ANOUNCED BELOW!! And MOON!!! I don’t care if you are on another planet, please comment!!
LOVED all your comments, have devoured each tasty word you wrote, of course. THANK YOU for all, each thought from you noted in my heart.
I will respond to the ones with questions… then tell you who won these Fabulous Prizes today!
Cinderkeys!! Well, I feel I had not thought out the titles of 2 of my first 12 tunes as well as I could have, so I wanted to be very sure each song this time could really say something I mean to. But usually I get the melodies first, or melody with lyric together. I do already have all the melodies / general concepts for the new 12, but not the whole stories and twists worked out. that’s where my Real Work begins.
Glenn!! Yes, it’s actually Kelly’s Spring Break, and I’m following along…
Now, friends, please realize I still have 6 more of my CDs to give away this week, and 6 more Billy Collins books too, so if I have not chosen you, keep commenting on the remaining posts this week!!
Oh, I loved so many of your comments on why you would like the Billy Collins — so close, so close, so touching, but this Billy Collins book will go to… SHAY — Fireblossom!!! For this sentiment of hers, “I will take the book with me to Danny’s Coffee Shop and also mention said book in a future poem in which one of the characters will be reading it.” Folks, that’s a pretty freaking brilliant plan, by Shay — a freaking brilliant poet in her own right. And Shay, I will love hearing that poem. Can’t wait!!!
Next, my cd, and again, please realize there were comments that did touch me deeply, Robin with her poem, Daisy with her sweet words, Brian’s sweet words, and others, but the cd will go to SUZEN!! For her thought, “Let’s see what YOUR art does to MINE!” I love the thought of art being created, so inspiring to ME. And friends, tho this comment of Suzen’s stands on its own today, what Suzen said the other day, when I announced there would be give-aways here this week, is extremely touching to me too, “Your give away is AWEsome! I would love to have one of your CD’s – it would be a great way to “feel” your soul thru your music and that would be amazing – a whole new dimension of knowing you! There is a part of an artist that really shines in their art.” Even if Suzen had not told me that the other day, her comment here on this post would still have garnered her this cd win, but I just wanted to highlight her idea of an artist’s soul shining. Love it!! And so true.
Marilyn Monroe notecards go to… Toni Cross!! Toni, I read that about Marilyn too. So sad to seem to have everything, but inner peace And I remmber Joe Dimaggio saying it was hard to live with a lightbulb, meaning she blinked from bright to dark, so easily. God bless her soul, I hope she is in peace now.
And finally, Blogging For Dummies goes to… Gina!! Yes, imaGINAtions…For making me laugh when she said about the comment she was about to post… “p.s. I hope this goes through – maybe I need the dummies guide to blogging lol.” Anyone who is not sure if she’s done her comment right to post it — surely needs Blogging For Dummies. Sweet.
SWEET!!! ALL of you!!!
See you tomorrow for 4 more of the prizes. Now, what can they be tomorrow???

Interesting …
After seeing your song list again, your mix of past and future, chilling and fun, deep and playful … strikes a chord … in a folk songy sort of “dust in the wind” kind of way.
It’s an intriguing mix of zany + haunting + thoughtful + tender … it’s like biting into the last strawberry of your life and tasting a wider range of possibility.

Jannie,
I have been a little lacking in the “making blog comments” department. Endometriosis Awareness Month has sucked me up like a powerful Hoover vacuum on steroids.
That poetry book look interesting! I can certainly see why it would appeal to you (an accomplished poet who has a funny bone and who writes poems that are more serious than they might appear behind that disarming humor). It sounds like something you could relate to!
I won’t throw my name in the hat for the Blogging for Dummies. I spend so much time on blogging and blog-related activities that I don’t have the energy to read about blogging… at least not anytime soon. You can skip me for Marilyn too.
Please consider it duly noted that I would love it dearly if you’d consider me for a Jannie Funster CD. As you know, I already have a copy. However, if I won another one then maybe I could give it away on my blog and ask you to (pretty please) ship it directly to my winner, with moonbeams enclosed in the package of course? (Not the lemon verbena ones… Remember we talked about how the fragrance could induce illness?) I would look at turning your CD giveaway into turning it into a giveaway on my blog as a type of recycling.
Who can argue against the value of recycling, right? Besides, it would give me greatly pleasure to share your crystalline voice with one of my blog readers. (Pssst: How am I doing? Am I hitting all the right NOTES in my plea to be the CD winner? Get it? NOTES… as in musical notes? Oh, I crack myself up)!!
Finally, I think Blue Bunny’s avatar looks totally groovy! If Blue Bunny’s Brother (BBB) were awake, I’d be sure to show it to him. It is looking downright funky. It looks like Blue Bunny could kick ass any day. Man, what are you feeding him besides lettuce, beets, and carrots? He’s looking powerful! Is he drinking Harry Potter’s butter beer? Has he been apparating to Hogsmeade again?
Jeanne (aka… “The Winner”)
P.S. “Morning has broken, like the first morning…” Jannie, please tell me who sings that. You’re killing me here. Please don’t make me resort to those lyrics websites to try to figure it out. That is gonna make me more bonkers than the Neil Diamond “I Am I Said” post. (I still hear a rousing rendition from K. on that song occasionally, thanks to you). Please spill.
