Texas Miracle Roses (a blog post in only 343 words — and 5 photos!)

See that picture directly above these words? I took it, and the picture directly below these words this past late Tuesday afternoon.
Posed Kelly. Poor thing, camera always stuck in her face. Such is the life of a model.
Here she graces the shed attached to our garage addition — all built by my amazing Jim, of course. He even made the shutters with his own two hands. And a power saw, or something.
That circle-top window shines from our new living room here, in all its not-quite-yet-finished glory. Christmas tree in there this year!??
Oh, Peeps! I haven’t mentioned lately – but our front entry has progressed beautifully-much in the past couple of months!! Yes, indeed. I’m dying to show you the updates, but want the gorgeousness to be just a smidge further along first. Remember our TWO front doors? Well, there is now A WINDOW where the old door was!!! Seriously! So keep your dial tuned to the funsterment, okay?
Anyhoo, back to the roses and such… 5 years ago Kelly and I planted those and the other shrubs you see.
Was my first attempt at roses. I fully expected them to die of the dreaded black spot within the first year. But I got lucky!
Don’t even remember what kind of rosebush it is. The really good kind, I guess. Blooms 8 months of the year with zero maintenance.
Next, a photo I took this past Monday afternoon…
(Poor trellis. I should just take it down. All the vines I’ve ever planted for it have ended up deer-munched. Yet, I like the trellis. It looks so… hopeful!)
Notice more blooms in the Tuesday photos than the Monday?!
Aren’t flowers amazing!?!
Here’s a photo I took 5 years ago, when all was freshly new.
I’m the worst mom in the world for not getting a photo of Kelly beside the new plantings when she was three.
Oh well, I’m sure all moms miss a photo or two along the way, right? Anybody?
But… I think I redeemed myself a bit by snapping this of her and her pal Erika in November, 2008.

Have you ever planted anything that grew more wild, strong and beautiful than you had ever hoped??
Have deer ever munched your plants?
Have plants ever munched your deer?

Thanks for the remodeling update- Have a good week-end!

Jannie,
You are a rose maven!!! We have this joke about rhubarb here. My dad used to say that it can grow anywhere…that is, until he gave us some (several times!) and we managed to prove that wrong! Yikes!!
And we have some of those munchers called deer (and rabbits!) around here too! They get around, don’t they (I wonder if they fly first class from TX to WI??).
On 16 April 2010 at 5:51 am Betsy Wuebker said,
Hi Jannie – Fabulous roses! Mine is just leafing out from winter (a month early this year) and I can’t wait for it to bloom!
I used to joke (not really a joke) that in the last house, my magnificent garden was treated by the deer as their personal buffet. They loved it all – tulips, hosta, tree trunks, whatever. It wasn’t uncommon to see two or three right outside the window munching away. Now we have fewer deer because we are closer in, but still we’ll surprise one every now and then raiding the bird feeders of seed. Their hooves sound like horses on the street pavement as they run, and there is quite a gaggle across the road in a wetlands area.
Deer. I suppose we won’t get rid of them until the wolves come down from the north, eh?

And of course, we Funsters luv yoose azwell BB. Growing roses is the stuff of poetry, but pic #3 is worth several thousand words. Kelly’s poses are to die for, and some day she will laugh herself senseless when she slogs through the “kizillion” photos commemorating her childhood. Or she will be embarresed passing through puberty, enit? Rhubarb, tomatoes, and roses are the most hardy of plant buddies around our digs; no deer though. We live in the center of the small town of Sumner, and there’s no green belt or clump of woods close enough to us to harbor those herbivores. Years ago I lived nearer a green belt and deer lived there, in the middle of many homes, and herds of raccoon, and one coyote, or maybe two who looked very similar to each other. So here’s sending a big rosy smooch to the Funster family, trainloads of karrits, and truckloads of love.

Well, I have a dear who munches on vegetable matter. She makes me do it too. It’s good for one’s constitution apparently. Makes it betterer… er. Drat, too many ers.
Am breathlessly awaiting your response to this comment. I’m hoping for some dashes to add to the dots from my previous one. If I put them together, I ought to be able to fashion a message in morse code! How cool would that be?
Actually, not that cool because I don’t even know morse code. Drat again.
PS: Your house is lovely but you need more gnomes to fill the garden.

Give Kelly a break from the modeling — she’s obviously not enjoying it here.

Snag!! I thoguht I’d post an eary mornig one to give you a chance to get up top too!
Yep, big beautiful FRAGRANT roses I wanted to take anohter pic yesterday to show more blooms out on it, but it was raining — not a good mix wtih the iPhonem, water voids contract — phone actually come wht 4 water sensors. your potted jungle on deck sounds MARVELOUS!! i’veseen shots here and there of the indivual ones. Will you show us a bunch at once, if we get lucky smoe time.
Lynn!! tHANKS, whoops. there! I guess my photo presence is alwyas felt, if not seen. Always the bridesmaid — never the bride, so to speak.
I likes woses! and you!!
Lance!! a rose maven. but not an eyeglass-knowing-where-is maven today. Oh — i do so love a straw-berry rhubarb pie. do you? With vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and a cup of orange pekoe tea, King Cole brand if possible. I hear those rose munching wabbits cahrter their own privae plane form TX to WI for garden munching!!
Betsy!! Don’t ya just LOVE spring, the many -slendored thing, the April rose that only grows in the early spring. Ah, now I’m all verklmmpt at teh Frank tune,, tho more have sung it I’ve only his version. We have gaggles of deer here too!! And flocks of wild coyotes!
And maybe even a herd or two of crawfish in the lake now. Oh, I do LOVE wolves. Did you see teh documentary of teh young couple who LIVED wtht them? So sad when the one sister wolf died. All her family cried, and so did I. HTey mourned her a long time.
Glenn!! Picture number 3, picture number 3? Oh yeah! Yo umade me scroll. SHe is a funny poser soemtimes indeed – -so much character and vitalityl Ahh, you are in a townish realm If I GOogle earth you will I see you out back flapping some jacks on the grill??

Tony, Tony, Tony — yoo makes me laff!! Your Dear sounds liek a real Dear. I know you’ve been here twice already, and I’ve not yet been to your blog, but I’ve been thinking of it. Suzen!! I love you rmetaphors for their growth. A coule years ago I tucked them back in behind the shutter because they wre always waacking into us, as we were carrying wood and supplies for the treehouse to tehback yard. And I’ve never set themfree from teh shutter, but they seem quite Thrivingly happy.
Hugs to YOU, Sugarpie!!
Jingle!! A PERFECT poet — yep that’s me. I never get cranky, say cuss words, put off hosuework, avoid stomach crunches, buttock exercise or fling the cat up a tree. I Am PERFECT!!! (And thaks for noticing!! )
And for the award.
Jaymie!! Thanks, dear lady. I think the hosue is coming along quite loverly, yes. But it had better after 17 years of wroking on it!!! Poppes are soooo lovely. Are they red? I guess ALL poppes are red tho, arent they?? Oh, and what’s your house plant? Boy do I have a story to tel you on a houseplant I have not wateredd in 6 years — but it is still doing great.
Talon!! So you have roses palnted that just havent’ come out yet? Or are yo alergic so neer planted any? And I do lvoe your life analogy, as you are so good at. Kelly liek the roses, growing up and out. And amazing. Oh athat Charlie!! NO She does NOT run through and ruin and / or munch your beautiful garden, does she?? Charlie!!! Are they tiger lilies? Those are lovely but do stain — I guess you could see the cuplrit by their muzzle, of your 4 animals!

Vered!! MIRACLE roses. I stil can’t believe it either!! Sadly tho, I have pretty much been responsibel for teh demise of every bouganvillea, geranium, boston fren and african violet I’ve ever brought into our house.
William!! Ahhh, thaks os much. i so appreciate your wonderful words. Next post I aim for 7 pics and 222 words!!
Brian!! Thanks a bunch. And a bushel — and a peck, whatever bushels and pecks are. Dad speaks of those sometimes. And I promise I’ll never hide these, or any, roses under a bushel.

Well, THANKS! A nice surprise for me today.
Dear Kim, I recognize that expression on you! From the pictures of your hippie days. I call it “timeless nonchalance”
Dear Mama Zen, Thank you for another lovely visit. She was thinking “Do you think my hair looks messy?” That’s what she told me just now when I asked her.
Dear Caity, Plant a tree and you plant love. Plant a rosebush and you takes your chances?
Dear Dustus, Yes, that and the child is quite petite. But they are quite big yes! I should measure them.
Dear Lane Savant, that is so sad. I think that’s what happened to Kelly’s second bunny, maybe a hawk. One minute he was in the back yard, 5 minutes later he was gone.
Dear Jingle, I hope you are not too bored now? Where IS everyone? Out walking in springtime. Planting gardens? Turning their fancy to love? I am soooo TIRED today! I need a nap.

Jingle, my dear Jingle, so Wednesday morning brings more traffic. That makes sense. Not sure if I shall be posting a poem this week. I have some tricks up my sleeve.
I enjoy your precious company in comments too. Thank you!!
Vikum, my dear Vikum, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh to the millionth power. Roses, roses, children, love and joy, all rolled into one big bundle called life. I think that whatever i plant from now on I will take pix of immediately — who knows where they will be years down the road?
Farnoosh, my dear Farnoosh, so in love with nature –I can relate to that from the top of my hat to the tip of my soul. I have seen some images of beautiful Iran, I remember photos of the Tehran flower market — ahh, so stunning, a gift for the eyes and the soul. What kind of herbs have you planted? Our property is almost downtown and we are backed up to the Park of the Capital building and Capital Lake….which is the mud flats emptying into Puget Sound…and if you go upstream you end up starting at a Glacier on Mt. Rainier.
We are right on the path to the ocean for all the animals…we are missing our eagles and birds of prey for the balancing act….so it is truly our fault for being in the path of the critters.
The roses started way to early with our dry warm winter and now it is winter weather – too wet and too cold…roses should not be this far alone…thus the mildew…
