Oops, She Did It Again
I’d never ridden in an ambulance until today! (I mean yesterday.) It was kinda fun. A bit. Except my daughter had just broken her arm. Again.
Her second broken arm happened last fall.
Her first broken arm happened when she was 18 months old. (No post on that yet.)
But I digress.
Already.
Getting back to this afternoon… (I mean yesterday afternoon,) I was at a coffeeshop slogging away having fun writing a song when I got the call that Kelly had just bounced clear off the birthday party bouncy house onto her arm. Poor baby.
Ten minutes and one morphine shot later, Kelly and I were running all kinds of red lights in a cute little bus with sirens and flashing lights.
Morphine for ME? I wish.
She took the attendant’s cue and smiled along for a parting shot as we landed at the wonderful wonderful Dell Childrens’ Hospital.
A flurry of loving attendants swooped upon us.
“You’ll need an i.v., honey. And more morphine.” Why not?
Morphine for Mom? Not a freakin’ chance!
Next photo — NOT for the faint of heart. So rush on past, if you must.
Nope — NOT good. Both the ulna and that other bone – what the heck is it called? Tibia? Fibia? Patella? Rotini? Fuselli? Funnybone? Nope. Oh, what IS it?? Oh, yeah, the RADIUS! Funny name for a bone that’s actually not round. I think. Maybe I missed that day in my orthopedic surgeon’s class.
But anyway.
She’d broken ‘em both real nice. But luckily, not completely off – just kind of hanging together.
Daddy’s here!!
And so is iCarly.
(The tv show.)
(You know — with Miranda Cosgrove?)
Kelly wants to BE Miranda Cosgrove.
Hey, what’s that lady doing???
Ahhhh, dripping a little versad into that girl.
And some sleepy meds, and off to la-la land goes Kelly.
Luckily, she didn’t have to go to O.R. — they wheeled in all kinds of fancy machines and were able to “reconstitute” (or whatever term they used) her bones right there in her little E.R. room.
Jim and I were kindly asked to “step outside” for said reconstitution.
But we came back to see this…
Ahh, much better! Nice straight arm again.
Then were asked to ”step outside” again when the firetruck x-ray machine came in.
I wanted the palm tree x-ray machine, but they were fresh out.
Back in we went.
Looking much MUCH better than her twisted “swan” wrist manoeuvre of above.
Then… they took a saw to my baby’s arm!!! Well, just a vibrating one. And just to the cast, to loosen it to allow for swelling. But still — I hate when they do the saw thing. I’ve been through it 3 times now, and it never gets any more pleasant.
Then… they brought out the blue swiss cheese elevation thing. I’d've preferred gorgonzola, but broken armed beggars can’t be choosers.
Wakey-wakey, Baby. And drink your blue Powerade, so you we all can go home.
Wake up, Sweetie!
Oh well. At least there’s Fox News to help bide the time.
Her feet are getting HUMONGOUS!! When did that happen!?
Then there was puking. (I was a little tied-up to catch those action shots, sorry.)
She woke, drank the blue Powerade, rested 10 minutes and puked. A lot of blue Powerade puking. All over. And on my jeans, socks and shoes.
But – into each life a little puke must volatiley project. Shakespeare said that, right?
Bedding changed, floor mopped, the Kelly snoozed a bit more.
Hey, that blue thing makes a great pillow!! She only has to have it on 2 days, then can sling it.
*********************************************************
It’s ’way after midnight as I post this. Heck! It’s way after 1:00 a.m.!
She’s sleeping here beside me, yes in the blue cheese thing.. And she’s okay. My baby is fine. No Kung Fu or gymnastics for 6 weeks or so. But plenty of cuddles, movies, books, who knows what else and such, will transpire.
I have drunk 2 glasses of wine as I uploaded these pics and wrote this. And eaten popcorn. Nice dinner!
And my baby is whole and healing.
All is well.
But should we give serious thought to – as Jim points out in the short video below — “take out a membership in the hospital” as in a Frequent Arm Breaker Program??
God, I hope not!
Good-night!!

Did you know bones on younger kids are “green” n bend more easily without breaking? now over age 7, the bones get more brittle, so will break easier- This is natures way to say don’t try to fly without a plane, ok?

Awh poor Kelly. She just got a cast off not all that long ago and now again?!! You warned the ‘faint of heart’ about that picture and like a dummy I HAD to look. Gave me the shivers. She’s a good sport, posing for those pictures. I guess it helped take her mind off what was going on, if that was possible. I can’t imagine how painful it is to break your arm.

Oh oh poor little soul – let alone Mum – two glasses of vino .. shock set in! Is she right-handed!?
You could have kept the arm like that .. so she could be used as a coat hanger? Oh dear – cruella hilla from over the pond!
Nice looking ambulance man – very smiley .. and they obviously looked after you all so well – thank goodness for all concerned – & at least it wasn’t worse I guess. A different life for a few weeks – and it’s hot and the arm will get sweaty and itchy .. oh oh .. poor soul.
Hate those kind of weekends or days .. haven’t done it with children as none as conjured themselves up here – but the elderly recently .. had a few trips ..
Send the ‘young fruit’ lots of hugs from her aunt across the water .. and to you both – today will be a quiet Sunday I guess, getting over the shockeroos & sleeping with blue cheese?! Thinking of you – and I’m sure all will be well .. gosh it looked kinda nasty! … hugs galore, I think you need those, Hils

Hi Snaggle, thanks so much for your well wishes! She is resting comfortably today, watching t.v.
Hi Davina, so sorry about that picture, but it does help paint the picture of how bad the break was, right? Yikes.
Hi Hilary, Cute Daddy eh!? A coat hanger! darn — wish I’d thought of that before we had it set. Yes, she IS right-handed.
Hi Lynn. Really? Your niece did this numerous times too? Now I don’t feel so bad. How’d she get the breaks?
Hi G. Yep, just last October. Same arm. Different spot. Cast must stay on longer this time. But we’ll find lots to do inside, I guess.
Hi Dustus, thanks! She’s doing fine today. In no pain, and watching t.v. Thanks so much for your well wishes.
Hi Daisy, thanks so much. I know — my baby. My poor sweet baby. She will heal even faster with all these kind wishes.
Hi Jingle, what rotten luck, eh? Three times now, and she is only 8. We will have to cope and get through somehow. Lots of work for Mom ahead with schoolwork.
Thanks so much you guys!

I imagine that was a frightening experience, although I guess the fright was probably tempered by the fact that Kelly is a repeat player in the game of, er, arm reassembly. Blue Bunny sure is lucky to be an invertebrate with no breakable arms!

hey Sweeties!!
Dear Chris! Yep, it was surreal again, but once we got the cast on it seemed like familiar stomping ground. We’re pros at this — yikes.
Wait– BB has a spine! Doesn’t he? he is a mammal. Kind of.
Dear Laura! Yes, freakish, freakish arm. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m not sqeamish much either, but Kelly’s dad — majorly!
Did your girls break bones too? Oh, and I totally forgot to tell you I linked to you in my previous post. I meant to — then bones got broken. She’s had a great day today, barely any pain.
Dear Cindy. I am sorry for the picture, I ought perhaps not to have showed it, but it did seem part of the story. Please forgive me. Pretty yucky-looking, eh? I do hope you guys never end up at the E.R. But if you have to, Dell is such a great place. Kelly’s actually had a great day today, almost no pain.
Dear Cinderkeys! Yep that was a great way to get around town, made a trip that would most likely have taken 25 mins, just 10 — even with the construction that was going on. Yeah, she was in a lot of pain after the 20-second shock wore off, so I let them administer the pain stuff. And they had a bunch of monitors on her in the ambulance. Have you ever “gotten to” ride in an ambulance?
Dear William!! You are so good to visit here so faithfully. I am afraid my blog reading has fallen behind again, but I hope to get out and about in the blogosphere soon. I miss you guys so much! Thanks — she is much better today, and will heal very well, I’m sure. It will be inconvenient having that big cast on, but she’ll get through.
Dear Adrenalynn! Brave — you hit the nail on the head with her, yes! even when she was ingreat pain before she got the morphine she did NOT cry. She is amazing. I sure hope you never have that happen to either of your sweeties. But it can. And does. The hospital staff were saying the broken bone season is picking up “nicely” now that it’s practically summer.
Oh, and yes — she is expected to have it heal better than new!
Dear Talon!! Yes, — one broken bone max per child should be for sure lobbied for and passed through Congress. I guess some kids are taking up the slack for others!
She fell back to sleep when we left the hospital at about 8:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m. when she popped up for a pee, and watch t.v. Ate a lot today. Jiom slept from about 11:00 to 11:00! And me — um, maybe about 2:00 I finally shut the computer off, and was up with her at 7:30. lotsa sleep!!
And NO headache today from the wine — whoo-hoo!!!

Hey Becca!! Welcome to Fusntertown, thaks for popping in. Yep, that thing is pretty cool, keeps the kid’s arem up day and night to help prevent swelling. yeah — totally INSANE, eh, the angle it was in prior to the cast.
Hey Jeanne!! Yeah, poor Kelly does it again. “Tuckered out,” I’ve always loved that expression. yep, plumb tuckered out she was, took quite a while to get her fully awake for discharge, then she slept all the way home and didn’t wake until morning. Will you show your child these photos? And tell her not to try to jump from one side of an open-air bouncy house to the other? Stitches — what?? what didi you do to yourself, Girl? You were an an active kid too, eh? Geez. In the Frequent stitchers program?

But perhaps it can be a lesson to you to go easy on those bouncy houses (castles, you call them, right?) Consider that blue swiss-cheese thing YOURS! Brian, thanks so much. Yep, she’s over reading a comic book and humming away at the moment. Just so glad it was only a broken arm. Spared again.
Dot, yes she is going to heal great I’m sure. 3 fluke accidents so far in her very young life, let’s hope this was the LAST one. And I suspect we have probably prevented other falls by stopping her from climbing things she should’t. She’s promised us she’ll never rock climb, sure hope she will honor that, as she is the type I can picture wanting to do that. Ahh, nightmares.
Tess, thanks. Look for your interview answers at the G-Mail address you gave, by the end of tomorrow. And Alexa (and other) numbers go up and down, even on the top blogs — natural fluctuations. You are on the right track — growing all the time, making connections, gathering friends and links like boquets of wold-flowers. Dear, Dear Chris, so sorry to make you worry. But she is doing fine!! Really. It was painful yes, but only until EMS got there and she had the morphine, so only 10 minutes of pain. She hasn’t even needed any Motrin today. Youa re so sweet! Um, house-cleaning I would very very much take you up on.
But your sweet visit and words are about as good a gift as it gets. And I know you have had your share of hospital time with one boy with diabetes. I should be mowing YOUR lawn, and baking YOU oatmeal cookies.
Hey Mama Z. She’s doing very well now, as I mentioned above doesn’t even need any Motrin today. Well, what ya gonna do? Most bouncy house fun is just that — fun for all. Poor Kelly, tho. Not fun for her to go through this again.

Thinking of Kelly!!!!
My “gloomy face” issue was a typo on my part.
I did show my child this post. She immediately shrieked, covered her face, and cringed when she saw Kelly’s pre-cast arm. (Whoever made the Harry Potter reference in a comment above, by the way, was referring to an unfortunate incident Harry had during a game called Quidditch. I know you haven’t read Harry Potter yet, Jannie).
Yes, Kelly looked “plumb tuckered out” alright. I would imagine the morphine knocked her out.
So, to clarify… Kelly jumped within the Bouncy House and managed to break her arm so badly IN IT?
Oh, my stitches stories are too graphic to share here. Let’s just say that I look back and feel badly for my poor parents.
Jannie, give Kelly an Elton John inspired message for me, will you?

Good Gravy, missy Kelly!! Like others the first pic put me in a panic. Did the child get run over by an ice cream truck, or fell down running from a rabid dog? Bryan is correct, though. I broke my arm in gym class in 7th grade, healed up in just a few weeks, and the bone heals much stronger than before. So in reality, Kelly will now be three times stronger than the average girly her age. Posting the pics as you did is almost like seeing a video, or using an old fashioned flip book; incredible. Next time have BB do the bouncing and jumping to safety check the thing before you launch yourself into thin air, and then come down a few points off perfect.

Hey Dr J! What a wonderful surprise to see your shining countenance here again today!! Yep, NO diagnosis need on that, for sure. And I guess it looked like that as soon as she stood up and saw it. Ahh, but on the mend now, for sure, my little Too much FUNster.
Hey Vered. I wasn’t laughing too much for a while there, that’s for sure. But exactly — the worst is behind us. Well, except for the stack of bills that will roll in.
Hey again, Bryan!! Well, how nice of you to add those links on your site, thanks. You alaso have a Do-Follow blog? Did you visit Jingle? She will hook you up with so many new poet reader friends — she really will. So, you broke some bones too, eh? I don’t feel so bad now hearing all of your guys fracture, breaks and stitches stories.
Hey, Jeanne! So you could get the sense of Harry Potter’s twisted broken arm from a book? That sounds like some GOOD writing. Nope, she jumped right from one side to the other of a bouncy house. Here… let me find a link to the kind I’m talking about…
http://inflatablecombos.com/images/lgimages/2009/ModularCombo_lg.jpg
It was kind of like that one — on the open part. She apparently tried to bounce from one side to the other and ended up on the lawn. I’m sure she will never try that manoeuvre again. She better not. “…Ooo-ooo, nobody knows it but right from the start, I gave you my heart. Ooo-ooo” (BB told me to tell you that.
P.S. How many times were you in for stitches?
Hey Mia, well, she’s back at school and was smiling when I last saw her. I guess she was the talk of the school yesterday, and she wasn’t even there. (Small school, maybe only 120 kids.)The kids who had been at the party were describing how her arm looked. You like taht firetruck x-ray machine eh? I think I was about ready for the Budweiser truck!
But the wine was mighty fine.
Hey Vikum, yep same arm — and her writing one. But Mom will help here with homework she can dictate to me. Actually, she’s pretty used to the broken right arm thing and is coping fine. (alto when she fell off the sofa at 18 months old, it was the left elbow she fractured — but of course she wasn’t writing then!) Ahhhh, strange life sometiems. And hey, I wonder why your comments do into my Spam folder — that’s just not right!! My wonderful Vikum of Thinking park is so NOT a spammer.
Has anybody else mentioned your comments going into spam??
Hey Glenn! Yep, Kelly will have bionic bones if she keeps this up. But she netter NOT keep this up. I’m gonna lock her in a rubber room from now on.
21 pix eh? Or is it 22? I lost track. Hey, kelly’s back smiling at school today and when I pick her up at 3:00 we’re going to see a new 3-D movie. And eat burgers and fries right in the theater — they’ll take your order and bring them right to you. And Jannie will order a beer!! Cool, eh? At our Alamo Draft House.
Hey Jingle!! Is it really Tuesday again?? Wow! Time has got away from me ever since Kelly broke her arm on Saturday. Darn! I’m all mixed up. I sure hope you are enjoying your day. And thanks for the award! Friendship seeds are always great to sow!!

OH
MY
GOD
JANNIE
I actually let out an audible gasp with the pic of her break. OMG OMG OMG. Poor baby!!!!!!!!!! Loved the tumbling video, but good Lord. Funny, she does all those back flips and breaks it in a bouncy house. Crazy. Poor little one.
Please send her my well wishes will you? I will not get that image out of my head all day.

Sheila!! Yes, you and everyone letting out audible gasps on that pic. She printed it out and took it for show and tell yesterday. Yeah how about that — no accident with all those flips, then flukes a break in the jumping house. Dear Lord above, I know there is a lesson in all this. Perhaps even a gift? But what? And where?? Oh yes — a nice collection of colorful casts for coffee table decorations! And stories for the grand-kids.

Aw, the poor thing. That swan-arm thing… gah! And she was doing so well in gymnastics too.

Yeah, Alice Audrey, the tilt of the arm break was surreal. But thankfully — all behind us now. Cast on arm for another 7-8 weeks, that will be the hardest — no swimming, playscapes, or anything much physical.

Poor little thing. Man, that must have been some jump that threw her out of that castle? Say, did you get that blond nurses number by any chance? No? Never mind, I just remembered that I’m married

Oh God Jannie!
I know what you mean by that saw thing – my father had a broken arm and needed part of the cast taken off with the saw, but he had Alzheimer’s so couldn’t understand what was going on, and it wasn’t much fun getting it done.
Hope you are all coping – I see it was only a few days ago.
love – R

Sire!! Robin!!
Sire!! Tha beautiful blonde is married to a youth Pastor!! You wascal you!!
Well, as you may know, it’s the way kids land that end those bones up broken. When she fell she tried to break the with her arms, but the fall broke her.
ROBIN! ROBIN!! ROBIN!!! What a thrill to see you here again. I was thinking about you just yesterday!!! How are you????? I’ve missed you so much. What have you been doing? Music? Fun? Seen the wrasse lately??
I love you too! Hope you and Frank are happy, healthy and doing the highland fling?
Yep, our poor baby. Funny — at this very moment she is in singing and playing away on computer. Since it was the right elbow she broke last fall, this thing is very old hat to her now!
But this cast will be on 7 weeks, or so, as opposed to only 3 weeks last year.
WHOO-HOO!!

Yep, she is doing great now, Michael — has had her cast off for 10 days. No Kung Fu or gymnastics yet, but she’s swimming, and having a fun fun summer.
Thanks for popping in!!
