Oh, My Wonderful Heck (Part 2)
House Style | Posted by Jannie on 23 May 2010 @ 4:49 PM 57 Comments

I took the above yesterday.
And the below a few months ago… (how our front entry had basically looked for, um, maybe 5 years!)

The green door marks our original entrance.
And the new door opens into a breezeway leading to a garage / Final Living Room addition my Jim built with his own two hands, starting about 7 years ago. The interior is abut 80% finished. Christmas tree in there this year? Maybe!
Did I mention Jim also works over 50 hours a week in his Real Job? And that he’s sweet, funny, nice, and a great disco dancer??
You saw the tree house he built, right?
We all agree – Jim is AMAZING!!!!
And wow, our house is finally coming together in many areas, after 17 years of working on it!
Then there’s the falling-down Canada house that waits for us…
(But I digress.)
So I’ll move right along, to our front entry in 1994.
(Yes, I posted the below picture in a previous remodeling post! Good memory, Jannie veterans!)
Notice no addition then? Nope. Wasn’t even really an idea yet back then.
(This was the first addition, off the kitchen — at the back of the house.)
And yep — the tuliped door above was later painted green, then many many moons later was replaced with the window on the left in the first photo of this post.
Did you catch all this? I know it’s a lot.
Whew, I need a cup of tea. And a beer — but not necessarily in that order.
Maybe a nap first?
You can catch my Oh My Wonderful… Part One post from yesterday too, showing another after-and-before angle of the entrance.
Oh, but I just gotta re-post this next pic, me in 1994 with Chance…
If you’re new here — you might like yet another rambling remodeling post from this house. I think there will be 20 in the series on this house. At least!

Hi Jannie! How cool! There’s nothing like a renovation – love the before and after aspect. Altho we had the work done (which it ISN’T yet!) I’m at the lake for summer of painting – no, not the artistic fun kind – painting woodwork, doors, ceilings (oh please God get me out of the white paint and into color!) The changes we made are unbelieveable – I barely recognize the inside at all, happy changes! (Don’t think I’m doing photos cuz I’m not – I only have my laptop here and the photos are all at home on the computer – plus for me, well you know me, so not techy. Like I TYPE, thats it!) Anyhow – your house is just wonderful lady!

We are dashing out in between terrific down pours to work on the garden beds that after 20 years need some help…also working at pruning lots of those nifty plants that we planted 20 years ago….I am not sure that a project is ever done?
I did decide not to re do the kitchen as hopefully the market will get better and we can sell this house and find something smaller, I can keep clean and we can travel – if my partner ever took time off? or stopped bike riding
This is fun to see all the progress. Lots of work and it looks so nice…enjoy

There was a princess there in Funsterland,
and she answered to Miss Kelly,
cuter than a coffee can full of colorful buttons,
and her jester was blue bunny
who had karrots on his jingle hat,
and her mother was the queen of Funsterland,
and the mayor of Funsterville,
and the spouse of Big Daddy Jim,
who not only slaved away at the Car Barn
to bring home the bacon and bricks,
he found the time to tear down walls,
take down doors, and put windows where
they once stood, and brick work, boy howdy,
landscaping walls, raised bed planting pots,
new siding on the palace;
all that’s missing are the turrets,
and the seven flags to remind us
where Funsterville, TX really is,
a lovely suburb deep in the heart of
the capital city; full of minstrals and mirth.
Somehow Big Jim, when he wasn’t twirling
Miss jannie in some fancy disco moves,
was using carpenter’s tools, and working into
those soft Texas nights hammering, sawing,
whirring, pounding, and every once in a while
filling the air with words that BB must write
down in his harebook.

Hi, Jingle! Well, I assure you I have not always been patient over the constant upheaval on this house,
but I do feel more patient now, in these final years of the construction. Charming post of yours over there, indeed!
Lynn!! A festival of delights — I LOVE that phrase, thank you!! Oh, and tomorrow I have some auctions starting on eBay to sell sets of Kelly’s books she is ready to part with. And with the proceeds I shall invest in a fairly good camera to start putting up sharper images of all this delight-fest stuff!! And may I say a who-hoo in advance about that?? Thanks — WHOO-HOOOOO!!! Wish me lots of high bidders.
Hey, Bestsy!! Thanks a bunch. I will be sure to keep those before and afters coming, and I will relay your kind compliments to “Mister Jannie!:
And I bet Pete does wonderful things in a very Pete style too!
Hey, Paige! I do love how it turned out too! It makes me smile to see how nice these finished areas are.
And guess what?? BB has a whole bunch of flower seeds sprouting!!!
Teahouse! Hey!! Many, many time over the years I have yearned inwardly and outwardly for an apartment high in the sky — or a condo, a nice low-maintenance turn-key place. Enjoy yours!
Well, Suzen it seems I’m just gonna have to pop in on that lake house of yours to see it with my own two eyes — since I may have to wait a long, long time for photos of it!!
I bet it is just lovely and I am highly intrigued.
Hey Erin!! Congrats on your bead finalists. I was wanting to know when the voting is over, so see if it would make sense to put up a button in my sidebar here to direct my blogging buddies to your post I commented on. And did you notice the petite scale of my cute young model??
Jingle!! Thanks a bunch for checking in on me — I’m doing well except my “o” key has begun to stick here on my laptop keyboard, and makes me realize just how many words have o in them!!! I have to remember to hit the o key very hard. (Pain in the butt.)
Patricia!! But at least you’re not dashing through the snow, right??
I have a partner I need to MAKE take time off too. Part of the reason I have not planned any trip with Kelly this summer is, we’re not going anywhere without him. I bet you have some gorgeous growth after 20 years!! And down-sizing sounds like a dream! Any dates or plans to sell yet?
Vered!! Thanks! It is coming along, slowly — but actually faster now — and surely.
Hey, and just wait until I have my new butt-kicking camera in the next month!!
Talon!! When I drive up now I am so proud of our place. Sometimes I even drive around the block a couple times and pinch myself to see if I’m real. And I am! And it hurts.
Thanks so much. I just love sharing these with you all.
Dudes — I have to switch to Kelly’s laptop. This “o” key is driving me totally nuts. And slowing me down.

Or at least a tuna sandwich for lunch!
And so sorry I’ve not been over to your blog, it’s next on my list. And Liara’s moved back to Australia!! I see that from her comment below! You’ve been to Oz, right??
“date” to the Blanton Art Muesum, then for a bite to eat. Can you believe she has never been to the Blanton??? She will love it! But where was I in this comment?? Oh yes… I think Jim needs exquisite 12-course meals everyday for the rest of his days on this planet for all this work!!!!
Hey, Mama Z! Yep, that spot is one of my glories these days. Can you believe it’s actually finished!?!?!? Whoo-hoo!!
Hey, Glenn!! “Bacon & bricks” what an awesome line!! So cool. And those words, “bad werds” as BB calls them, — they come aplenty out of my building man bytimes during construction. Like Sheila above once said, “all a man needs to put up outdoor Christmas lights is a ladder and the F-word.”
Kinda like that.
Hey Trisha, living inside a dream, yes I suppose now that the nightmare stage is past.
But seriously, thanks. I guess we all can live in a dream in some way, and perhaps even shape and direct our dreams with our thoughts and deeds!
Dear Eleanor Rigby — I mean — Tess!! Ahhhh, look at all the lonely people. That song does ring a dim gong for me yes.
Jim — sorry, mold broke long ago.
My Nova Scotia boy who had an Episcopalian minister for a dad, from a long line of wood-working artistes. Those are kinda rare to come across. But similar men do exist, I’m sure.
Hey JoyChristin — you know I live on a boat in my imagination, right?? yep! And small but charming ChrisCraft from the 30s. One I stand beside on teh dock and amaze all onlookers with my once-round hula hoop manoeuvre! patience, patience, yes. All will unfold as it should when the stars are lined up just right!
Tony!! Again — have you alwasy beenso funny? I suspect so. Did I tell you I used to docorate shoe oxes for a living? Yep!! Well, only part-time of course, while I was putting out oil well fires in the Dallas area, and working nights as a security guard at a mall.
Hey Liara — always a wonderful treat to see you here!! Back to Australia, eh? How wonderful. I’ll be visiting you!! (I hope.) Thanks for your lovely words I am a huge far of YOUR blog, as you may know. See you soon!!
Hey Sweet Daisy!! Yes, he’s my keeper, whether he wants my shenannigans or not!
Oh, thanks. And do you realize that little shrub to the left of the door in the old photos is the one-same that grew into the tree in the new photos??!! Yep — I think I’ll do a whole post on just that tree one day!!
Jingle!! What are you up to over there in magical poetry-land?? I’ll have to check it out. Thanks!
Hey, Mister Lance — so great to meet you. How did you find my blog? Probably from JoyChristin, the hula-hoop boat woman?? Wait!! I DO remember YOU!! You’re the guy in the tiara!! Oh yes. Well, I had a beer, then a tea, then a beer, then another beer after I posted this.
Just kidding — I totally skipped the tea!!
Kelly was holding a purse, and we were just leaving for Staples. And after that we went somewhere else, but I forget where! Then we came and ate donuts. Ahh, thanks Lance, I do think the hosue is turning out cute too!!
Glenn!! You’re back — how super! Wisconsin — lance is in Wisconsin, I think I once mistakenly called him Minnesota Man too. And dont you just LOVE saying Minnesota out loud?? Yeah cyber woes — drat. I’m tapping this on Kelly’s laptop becaue my “o” key is sticking, darnit!! Yes, th iPhone cool for Internet. And hey — even mister Jim got an iPhone now!! Never thought I’d see the day — Kelly and I are stil lin total shock he moved into such new technology. Well, Kelly wanted blue and yellow stripes, (to match My Big Eye,) but they wre out of yellow. I think they’re changing out her cast Thursday, so maybe she’ll get her first choice this time. Maybe.
Dot!! I am soooooo loving the finished parts!! I would’ve been more than content to keep this a nice little bungalow, but now that some parts are getting finished — I think I’m good with all this remodeled stuff.

Hilary! Notice anyone from FunsterLand over on your site today??? Can you believe yours is actually the only blog I’ve read and commented on today? Well, if you didn’t you now do! But the day is young, and I feel young. I may get to more blogs yet! And please send good vibes for Kitty (or no one) to wake me until I’ve had at least 6 full hours sleep tonight, okay?) I could use some help, critters have woken me up too much lately. But… Moving right along… Wouldn’t it be GREAT if we could be in Oz together, and dance on yoru grandfather’s bridge? Let’s just see how the years unfurl. (Jim’s lucky of he gets a 1-course meal out of me.)
Decided against the Blanton until cheap day. Went to Elizabet Ney, but it’s closed today. Still it was nice just to stroll outside a bit. Had a munch at a cafe, then a quick visit to Mayfield Park — Kalyani had not been to any of the 3!!! (She tends to say in her 78704 zipcode!!!) Seriously, she does! She ventured out here to the Burbs a few times and was amazed at our vast wilderness.
And you saying
“everyone” reads my blog makes me feel all narcisstically important.
Karyn!! I wore that dress OUT, literally. I paid quite a lot for it in 1987 — maybe $70 — and it was on sale for half price then. Chambray denim, fit like a dream!! I think I finally had to set it free in 1998, having worn it clear out!!
And all the pearl snaps had
Hey J.D.!! Firstly let me day what a lift to see your gravatar over there for all 4 of my last posts. It’s INCREDIBLE you care enough to catch up with me. i knw you are busy, and efficient in life — even if you’d commented on just this post and skipped the previous 3 I’d still be beaming. Thank you for your kind support. I am very humbled. (Insert humble face here.)
yes, — a journey, a journey indeed. And it is so true — we can make whatever we dream up and execute. I’m going to shoot very very high for the house in Canada — make an overall plan, instead of slapping on additions here and there as we did with this house. Mind you, I really LIKE what we’ve done here, but Canada is really a blank canvas waiting for our brush strokes under the Nova Scotian starry skies!! Hey, I might even design some of it myself — get into that autocad thing!
Thank you ALL!!!

Your house looks just amazing and I love how the entryway turned out!
Please tell Jim that the bar has been sent very, very high in the tree house department. Very high. As much as I look forward to seeing the finished product on my end, I have some deep concerns about just how long it will take.
So, please send some “positive tree house energy” our way. I’d like for it to be built in time to actually be used… if you know what I mean. Ground has been broken now. So, it’s no longer in the “talk” phase or the “3D animation” phase but in the “action” phase. Let’s hope the “action” phase goes quickly. So many projects going here at once that I can’t help but worry.

Puddy cats are a pain – they do love canoodling don’t they .. if only they weren’t night creatures .. we get foxes calling too – that’s quite an interesting sound .. one can understand how sound travels at the various wave lengths ..
Wouldn’t it be fun to be in Oz together .. we must start saving and making a plan – a year or two away I suspect? So pleased Jim gets one meal a day from you .. that will keep him cutting and sawing more wood for the mansion that’s Funsterland! I look forward to first visiting Austin (again a year or two away) .. and seeing all these places ..the Burbs sound good .. love wildernesses! I see you are part of a giveaway! I clicked on the top right hand corner fascinated to find out what it was about, and what a beautiful website I landed on. Anything handmade is always truly priceless, and that includes soap and your cd. (handmade music)

Now this meet up .. 2 – 3 years .. & we can see Liara, Wilma and others .. – should be fun with a trip to NZ .. they’ll plan to leave by then?! Should be fun though .. bye for now .. Hils

Vikum!! I think Sheila said it very very well above about me in front of my “Hansel & Gretal” house?? You know that story??
yep, an amazing Jim!! Am I on of the the luckiest women in the whole world?? Or what?????
Hi Ana — you know — it was just a little bungalow that as you say — had much love added. And I just LOVE sharing the before and afters. I admit I have not been so crazy about all the “during” stages,
but it’s turned out very very well. And i am SO glad you clicked over to Sheila’s! She makes WONDERFUL stuff in her Aventine Hill — and her blog is WONDERFUL. She is so funny. And your blog is so WONDERFUL– and full of love and light!!
Hey Hils — yep the piano duet is behind us now. I’ll have to look at the video to see how it went.
Kelly kept me on my toes!! SHE is the pianist in the family — only into lessons 18 months now, but doing so well. We are on Central time — so I guess that puts you 7 hours ahead of us?Nope not a new kitten, but he’s going through a little phase lately.
He is so WONDERFUL, tho. I love him so much!!! A gravelly resounding bark — got it!
Oooo Australia…. I’ve got 2 good pals in Brisbane I’ve never met.

The changes look really good. I thought the 2 photos were like “Spot The Difference” by circling all the changes!
Would i get a prize if I got them all right?

Hey Sweet Hilary!! Yes, Jim snores loudly. But I love him so much anyway.
I have not yet looked at the video — in fact the videocam is still in the car. Short day for me on The Net as in less than 2 hours I leave again to pick up Kelly to take her to the broken-arm kid place and see what the next step in life will be.
LLCoolJoe!! LOVE your idea of a spot-the-difference post. I almost did that in this post a while back, more of a learning post for me…
http://www.janniefunster.com/2010/02/19/beauty-shop-cutie/ I think in the future I WILL have a spot the differences post –smashing idea. Brill — as you Brits say!!
Hey, Jingle — thanks. It’s been such a busy-crazy week with school and home things, and could be again tomorrow. I’ll get over when I can.

The old green door looks like a very high-security device — it’s got that white light contraption that flash-blinds burglars, and the red tripwire! Will there be similar electronic countermeasures used in the construction of the new door?

And still, Jim…I LOVE the work and Jannie, I so am gonna stalk you and come sleep on your front porch ‘cuz it looks like a fairytale! To me anyway. Have a good one! (No, I really am not going to stalk you…I think…wait. Hmmmmmm).

Hey Sweet Hilary. Ahh the snoring, a bone of contention some times. I have been known to head to the futon at the other end of the house on very loud nights.
He is a wonderful man, yes. I am beyond lucky. can you believe I have yet to watch the piano duet video? Yep! And blogs to visit — yes…
Hey Chris! That security light could be seen from Hubble, I think! The new door looks like wood and glass but it’s actually stained titanium.
Hey Mia, I have been looking for you on my front steps at night, but I fall asleep waiting. I guess you arrive just after midnight and depart at 6:30 when I first wake and peer out?
Hey, thanks Tammy, the stone on the new part is actually man-made, facades really. Yep! The old stones are real limestone blocks. I love how Jim blended them in so amazingly well. Most of the house is stucco now, but I do like those stones out front!
