Vacation, Stay-cation Or Play-cation In Your Mind?
Family | Posted by Jannie on 22 June 2010 @ 8:15 PM 45 Comments

What a fun family time we had on our recent mini-vacation!
Lovely hotel resort.
(Be even lovelier once they refund the hefty overcharge to our credit card.)
Overcharge aside, we enjoyed our time away.
Blue Bunny had a blast! He couldn’t get enough of Lazy River snorkeling, carrot fishing, turnip tossing and all the wild bunnies running free.
I think he may even have found a little girlfriend! Ooo, la-la.
Vacation! We figure with Jim still working so much, a 2-day trip once a month might be just the ticket! There are so many awesome places to see within 100 miles our home.
Central Texas rocks!!
How ’bout you? Any summer travel plans? Long exotic trips? Week-ends? Overnights? Day-trips?
Just taking a trip in your mind?
I am off now to do 3 things…
1. eat spaghetti.
2. drink more Merlot.
3. continue looking for an audio cassette of singing that someone nice and beautiful mailed me and I have to mail back.
Soon I shall enjoy answering all the amazingly wonderful comments you left here recently, and revel in the wine of your wonderful blogs.
With love, from Jannie
xoxo

Texas always surprises me. In my last adventures, I loved the 80 MPH speed limit on the open roads by Ozona. I got to see Mexico right across the border and that was cool.

Your 2 day breaks .. sound a really good idea .. time enough to relax and play .. but not too long to totally disrupt life.
So glad you had such a good time .. sounds glorious .. snorkelling, carrot fishing, turnip tossing .. and drinking merlot on your return ..

We took a “vacation” to a therapeutic camp for J.Browne. It wasn’t anything like a vacation for us, but all the kids got something good out of it. I wonder how much longer it will be before we can go. Years? Maybe we can take Blue Bunnie with us! There’s no reason why he shouldn’t get around, right. LOL.

Well, yes, Melva and I have had dozens of mini-vacations over the years; usually trips to the ocean or mountains. But because she is a teacher, we always have done two-week road trips, visiting in-laws in Texas, and all over the Southwest in between. But my retirement starts in two days, so this summer, this Friday, we will start our 6,000 mile road trip that will span three weeks, shooting across the Cascades Friday afternoon, skirting most of eastern Washington by nightfall. Drop down to Lewiston, Idaho and head up over Lolo Pass to Missoula, then on to Deer Lodge, Montana for the best chicken fried steaks along the interstate, then shoot diagonally up to Highway 2 and parallel the northern edge of Montana, shoot across North Dakota near the Canuck border, and dip into Minnesota long enough to make it to Duluth, and toss a rock into Lake Superior; than heading kitty-corner back to Texas dropping through bunches of states on the way down, visit with my in-laws in Lolita, TX, then head up to Colorado Springs to visit our oldest daughter and two grandsons, followed by a surge up to Wyoming to stop for some time in Laramie, before traversing the way back to Washington state. We will be driving my newish 2008 Suzuki Gran Vitara, and though it will only get 21-23 mpg (compared to the 41 mpg we get on our Camry Hybrid), but we’ll have some fun anyway.

Yay! I am catching up with my comments and reading your blogs.
Hey, Tammy — ain’t that the vacation truth sometimes?! We wear ourselves our and need a vacation from the vacation. Where did you go? I’ll just have to zip over to your blog and find out.
Hey, J.D. I don’t think I’ve been to that 80 MPH highway, altho on Monday coming home I notice I had crept up to 80 on a 70 MPH road. Texas is filled with a lot of cool places, indeed. I like the charm of this hill country.
Hey, Tess! Now what part of this exactly had you laughing out loud?? It musta been BB, right? Jim works s much and so hard some short vacations will be the way to go I do believe. Michigan is BEAUTIFUL! Whoops, Merlot all gone, but there’s more at the store.
Hey, Daisy — recharging was it exactly! My favorite part was just tubing on the lazy river with margarita in hand. And Kelly — you know kids — she was in the water 95% of the day.
Hey, Talon — BB and Linda have been e-mailing 20 times a day!! He’s completely smitten. Love is in the air, I do believe. And she is a real sweetie, as are her parents and 37 little brothers and sisters.
Hey, Cinderkeys — exactly! I’ve been on vacations as yu speak of — thse needing resting up from. Not so fun! Floating around and around on the lazy river and lounging in the pool was my kind of thing!
Hey, Hilary — and isn’t it great to see Kelly with such a nice big smile, and not trying to hide her gapped teeth!! Yeah, Jim generally works Mnday to Friday and Saturday until 2:00, so if we take off early afternoon Saturday and come home Sunday night, we’ve had 2 nice days. We’re loking at San Antonio next. We were last there when Kelly was 7 months old. The Alamo and Riverwalk are really nice to absorb. Yep — BB was SO proud of his 3 carrots caught!!
Hey, Snaggle, if I had your gorgeous scenery I think I’d get lost in it every day for an hour or so. Even a dip in Our Amazing Swimming Pool can take me away to a new sphere. The refund — nope not yet. maybe they overcharge everyone and make some interest money on us. Oh well… Yes, I’d like to see what a week in Paris, Vienna or Sydney feels like but with $$ and time not available now, vernight stays here and there will be just as good I bet! Plus, who needs all that flying hassle and the jetlag??
Hey, Lynn, Linda is such a little sweetie. BB is enthralled with everything about her. And she taught him some skateboard tricks!! Ahhh, new love, young love, how timeless.
Hey, Caity! We really do have some very lovely spots to explore in our Texas Hill Country. Cute little towns. Big Resorts to relax at. Anyplace with water in summer is a winner. And Schlitterbahn, onoe of the world’s TOP water parks is less than an hour from where we live!
Hey, Mia, BB is totally up for any camping experience. He just loves getting out, meeting new people and seeing anything he never has before. And he’s also totally game for visiting you at your house and teaching your kids basket weaving, musical glasses with water, and dances like the bunny hop and the rabbit step!
Hey Brian, the mountains — sounds very beautiful. And cool. You taking a complete break from the Net for those 2 days?? Have fun!!
Hey Alice Audrey, until Jim sells his business he’s working long and hard, which may be a while in this slow economy. So 2 days away is a gift for us at this point. Easy driving is a key for sure, more time spent at the fun spots than on the road.
Hey Suzicate, I made up a huge batch of spaghetti sauce with ground beef a couple months ago and froze it. If I may say so myself, the spaghetti gets tastier each time we eat it, about once a week.
Wow, Glenn — 2 days until you retire, that must feel weird, after all these years. I envy your gorgeous mountains. You gonna visit Bob Dylan’s place in Duluth?? Is his childhood home a museum yet? Why are you not taking the Camry?? Sounds like an awesme, awesome trip planned!!
Lane, when the moon hits your eye like a big spaghetti pie, that’s amore. Wait — wrong song… Yo no sais. Das verstashe ich nicht. Je parle anglais et francais seulement.

Hey Jannie,
Lazy rivers are all sorts of good!! Well…except that one time…the river was so busy there was a super long line to get in (we skipped it). Maybe I should make a lazy river in our backyard. In the winter it could double as a speed skating rink (or for me….a great place to fall down).
The later part of July will be vacation time here. Headed east, we are. I’m going to attempt a triathlon in Cape Cod. Then some time in NYC, Boston, and a bunch of days in Maine. That’s the part I’m looking forward to….(and the the big road trip home!!) Woohoo!!

hi Cuties!
Lance do you suppose a Lazy River ever gets so lazy it just up and plain stops accepting tube passengers? The latter part of July sounds like a Dream Vacation to me. WONDERFUL NE summer spots. And depending on where you are in Maine, you could be as little as 150 miles from the town I was born and brought up in! Yep.
Joaquin, you are so right. I actually cleaned the pool for half an hour a while ago, pushing the skimmer around. And then did 5 laps. So… what’s the cimcumference of a 15′ round pool? Something times 3.1416, or something??
It was nice t see Jim get away from the business phone for most of the time (he did talk on his cell a few times to work,) and let his trusty Office Manager do a good job in his absence. How far from San Diego are you?
Hey Luisa, I just feasted on your Grand Canyon pics. As I said in my comment, can they please move that gorgeous thing with 100 miles of our house?
And hmmn, where will be go in July? Bastrop Hyatt? Four Seasons or the Hyatt right here in Austin? Some cute little B&B out near Kingsland? Live high on the hog in downtown San Antonio for one night?

“Vacation,” like “work” begins and ends as state of mind (or state of being). Some people always say their lives are essentially ‘all work and no play.’ Yet, other people never stop playing. When you love what you do, it may not seem like work. Different conditioning leads people to have different attitudes about how they do, should or have no obligation to contribute to the greater good or wider communities. Some people also feel guilty they never work enough. Others could not be bothered raising a finger. SOme people even view life as an extended vacation. To be aware of how you think, what you believe and how each perception arises is a meaningful process. Ultimately, you are your own judge and jury. You love and accept self and others or criticize with motives.

My partner and youngest child are working out getting ready for the Seattle to Portland bike ride July 17th. They are going to do the ride in 2 days and stay at a motel 140 miles in….204 miles altogether with 8,000 others!
I am using my funds on 5 massages over the summer…taking a good walk, having a bath and then going to the massage….coming home and reading or doing nothing (ha ha like I could accomplish that feat – maybe with Merlot?)
I am getting some great throat opening sounds with my chanting group each Friday at noon – think some possibilities are opening up….in the vocal department and definitely some relaxation.
Looks like fun was had by all. We used to go camping with kids at the spur of the moment….now one needs reservations and the places are crowded with RVs and too many people. Reservations fill up by March.
Sound like a good plan….oh those hard working menfolk

Hi Jannie – Glad you had a fab time. That lazy river looks awesome. We had planned to go to BC this summer to see if we’d like to live there. But the pound is so weak against both the Canadian and American dollar right now, we might have to change our plans.
The kids are going for a nine night trip to Spain with my parents, so I was thinking about a mini vacation or two later in Summer. That way, we can take a bigger vacation in the winter months when the lack of sun is getting me down.
There’s lots of nice places near where I live, trouble is, we don’t often get the weather. But flights to Europe can be cheap. We can go to Venice, or Rome and back for about £35 per person if we pick the right dates and just take hand luggage. The airline is pretty bad but who cares, so long as it actually gets you there.

Hello Lovely Liara, your comment is a great reminder that we create our own reality. We choose where we go in our minds. We choose how we feel and react to every moment. Very thoughtful words, all. I hope you, Brett and “Baby Bump” are all well??
Hey Talented Tony, I wish a Disney were close to here — nearest one is either CA or FL. We do have a Sea World abut 75 minutes from here, but that’s really not my cup of tea. I prefer a REAL sea world, not one created 150 miles inland. And I like the thought of wild animals free. Oh, yes BB is back here — Linda (linnda)
works at the Hyatt resort.
But they’ve been e-mailing every hour.
Lovely Patricia, I should like to ride a bike — haven’t in years. Maybe we’ll all 3 get some with the $$ left over from My Amazing Camera, from eBay. At least their second day is only 64 miles! Your massage stay-cations sound awesome!! I am not a massage taker but I know that like golf, and skiing — those who love it — love it a lot. At the vocal thing, is it like a “sounding” where you make all kinds of wild sounds, or sing — or whatever? I went to one a few weeks ago at Kalyani’s and it was a hoot!
Hey Sean — I’m totally with ya on the long fun vacation, I hope it’ll be in the cards for us. We’d LOVE to take Kelly on a Disney cruise. I lk frward to checkingin on your cruise prgress, I think when last I checked yu had almost raised all the money. We did spend one day at Disney CA when Kelly was 4 — that was AWESOME!!! I got to ride teh Peter Pan ride about 10 times.
Hey Lovely Cath, wow! Great to see you again so soon. Yes, the lazy river was my favorite part. Wow — you are considering moving to BC from the UK? To be close to Davina? I LOVED what I saw of BC in my 6 weeks there in 1986. Spain sounds great. Mid-winter vacations sound great! Venice and Rome sound extra Grrrrreat — I love the thought of all that old architecture and art over there!
Hi Lovely Trisha! Firstly — I love that word relish as a verb. I like it on a hot dog too, but as a verb just makes me smile!

It’s good to see you back. Missed you. It’s wonderful that you had a nice break minus the hefty overcharge. Sounds like you all did enjoy yourselves and it does make a difference taking a few days every off so often, as it rejuvenates oneself. And what better way than spending it with the family.
As you know I have a week planned in mid September to return home to Portugal with my partner. He booked it a while back. Though I am keen to go earlier in August and volunteer at this Permaculture and Creativity project (Eco village) for a few weeks before.
I was just going to publish this post yesterday, but I had a call and went off to central London (Green Park) for a lunch date with a friend. Hope you are well, and it’s really good to have you back.
