Dancingly Strange (a.k.a. “weird in the blogosphere”) — a poem
Seriously Weird, The Pea | Posted by Jannie on 19 July 2010 @ 3:30 PM 37 Comments

Yes, I’m a weird one
trailing eddies of x’s
and o’s as I flit about,
my comments sometimes
too long, rambling and / or
too Blue Bunnily cavorted,
and / or too frequent or
too infrequent, or just
too dancingly strange.
Yes, I’m weird and change
up my header a lot due to
my new PaintShoPro toy…
but please know I’m harmless,
and always so glad to see you
when you twirl on over here.
Hey, how’s that for a crazy 1-minute poem?
Now let me find a dancingly sweet photo for it.
Ah ha! One I took at the grand opening of Austin’s beautiful Butler Dance Center, when Kelly was 5.
It was a great dance party.
LL Cool Joe must’ve been the DJ – the tunes were so crankingly hot!
(Kelly only lasted 3 months at Ballet Austin because she was more interested in being a comedienne in class, but I did get some cute pix before we quit. And of course, she took tap / ballet at a couple other studios from ages 2 to 4, so there are those pix and videos to cherish forever too.)
No more ballet, yet life has continued! Who knew it ever could or would?!
And below, a little dance party break.

Friends, did you ever “quit” a class or an activity for you or your child? And if so, how did that work out? Was it a learning experience?
And are you weird too? (Feel free to share details of that!)
With love and confections…

Jannie

Well you know – no kids, so there’s just me that quit things. I thought I would like to play the flute in grammar school when they start you on all that. But it turned out that I just couldn’t do it and then tearfully hated it. My music career was over.

Whoa! Looks like Kelly’s slipping into a different timestream in that first photo! Now she flits about, sight unseen, here there and everywhere. She even visited our little corner of the world and turned all the potplants upside down. Grrr! Kelly is now my nemesis! I shake an ineffectual fist at the sky because of your dastardly deeds! Cassy tells me to just get over it already.
I quit learning to play the ocarina not so long ago. Why? Because I genuinely don’t have enough fingers (I’m missing my left thumb). I was so sad about that. It’s hard to know what musical instrument doesn’t require all your digits to be intact! Bleh!

I’m very weird. What? You couldn’t tell?
I suspect my dd might have gotten tossed from her dance class except the teacher found out I had stage experience and turned me into her stage manager. I was valuable enough to make it worth putting up with a little untreated ADHD.

Actually I have a long history of not quitting!
I’ve folk danced, square danced, was a girl scout, for many years.
My girls were in Rainbow Girls, band, marching band, n colorguard all the way thru school.
I learned to play every instrument I got possession of, n one kid learned all the wood-winds, the other all the percussion stuff from bells to quads.
Other than that we didn’t do alot of paid activities, just free ones- like Cape Baseball League watching n after school enrichment programs.
My older Sis quit piano lessons when young- then I couldn’t have lessons according to my mom- so I learned to wing-it learning on my own!
Luckily I pic things I can do, I guess!

Hi Jannie! I don’t quit stuff either but when my son was little we were asked to leave several classes – mom and tots swim class cuz he screamed the whole time, mom and tots gym class because he refused to do a forward roll, and mom and tots music class because he would not sit on my lap and do “Itsy Bitsy Spider” but ran around the circle for the entire class. Ok. We weren’t “asked” we were plain out kicked out!
He is a normal person of 28 now – thank God!

Jannie,
That is a fabulous picture. I love it!!! It’s got such great action and color.
The poem is, as usual, wonderful and made me smile. You are so multi-talented.
Regarding Kelly, I think you and Kelly should start a comedy class for kids. I mean think of the benefits…laughter is really good for you, the parents would have more fun when they go to the recitals and the cost of the “uniform” would be almost nil…unless someone wants to be a true clown. You could do mime, stand-up, and physical comedy, just for example. Maybe even the parents could join in. Certainly, bb would have a roll:~)

Well Jannie, did you compose the poem in one minute or does it take a minute to read? Regardless, the
message is clear, and you will gather Funster followers by the bushel every day, I say. I love Sheila’s typo, “Brids of a feather”, conjures up all kinds of possibilities. Let’s see, quitting things, yes, when I was 8 years old I was impressed with the fact that my grandfather could play the fiddle. He never called it a violin. I had a chance to take Band class, and I decided to learn to play the violin; conjuring up fantasies of playing family duets with my grandfather. The first couple of classes I was “first chair”. I stood tall and learned to hold it beautifully. Then I was sent home with the instrument to practice scales. My stepfather put up with the screetching and caterwalling for one week, and then he took the fiddle away from me explaining that one more hour of my practicing would put him over the edge; and that was the end of my violin career.

Thank you, Marya! So nice of you to say. Hope you are well today.
Dear Lynn, your visits here are always like flute music to me — well, you’re a whole beautiful orchestra in my books!
Alexandra. Welcome! I took that pic while I was dancing. Yes, it was truly truly a fun rocking party!! AWESOME tunes!!
Hey, Sheila (sister weirdo) — you like BB as a punk rocker? He is experimenting with potential Halloween looks lately. I wonder what we’ll see him dressed as next?? He does like to mix it up.
Ahhh, Jingle, thank you. I do love photos, and posting them to share with all you beautiful people.
Hey, Tony! Kelly sails around the world in and out of many sweet dimensions. And I always love when you Brits say “potplants” as it has a bit of a different meaning over here.
We tend to call them potted plants.
Hmn, the ocarina. I know in classical guitar the left thumb never touches the strings. Xylephone (sorry, never could spell that)could work for you! Or the, oh what’s that called — shoot. Glockenspiel!! beautiful-sounding instrument, so pretty and tinkly.
Ahhh, Vered, I know I’m just looking for folks to say I’m not TOO weird,
so thanks for your sweet words.
Hey Luisa, I do admire that stick-to-it-ive-ness. With Kelly she was really starting to distract the class. Silly-billy. But her Martial Arts teacher keeps her in line. And she loves her gymnastics.
Hey, Erin! Oh, hang on BB wants to speak to you himself…. deerist my erin. helo! i hops yoo are gud tday? i iz fine, thanks yoo. i stil loving that pitcher of yor cute gerl, my kelly wood love to play wit her and eet smoores wit her. and i knows deep in my hart my jannie wood drinks beer wit you, and mebbe evin for brekfists. xoxox from me wit loves, blue bunny.
Hey, Alice Audrey. I LOVE your weirdness! And at one of Kelly’s earlier dance places, I did the back-stage-mother thing. It was a LOT of work. Ahh, I will be sure to tell BB you like his punk look! He’s been cmpletely obsessed with it lately.
Ahh, thanks, Ed. Yep, I labored for all of 60 seconds over that masterpiece poem above.
I was quite moved by your forgiveness piece last night. Thank you!
Oooo, hey Katherine — what sweetness you got cooked up over there for me? I’ll be checking that out for sure — thanks!
Hey, Snaggle!! That’s awesome all you’ve done!! I think most anything you put your mind to you are good at. Rainbow Girls looks great, I just Googled and see they are still growing strong and are a helpful bunch. Had never heard of them before.
Fireblossom — me too!!
Hey, Suzen, I feel for you during those tot days. Kelly was usually the tot running around in circles too, but I found lots of unstructured fun time for here. Gymboree was awesome on their Free Play day. We LIVED there until she started pre-school. Is that your son in the military?
Hey, Dustus, she tried to get all the girls laughing with her silly antics. Boy, it was not a good fit, even tho the teachers were sweet and did their best. Looking back — it’s hilarious!
Ahh, thanks Tess! I guess there’s nothing to do about my great weirdness.
Love me — or leave me.
I think sometimes we have to realize if something is truly not working out we move on.
Hey, Paige, I think if I ever stopped being weird I’d keel over and end up in the looney bin.
LOVE your weirdness too. Hey, what’s BB wearing now? Oh interesting — he’s got on a Hawaiian grass skirt and a lei. cute!
Hey, J.D. I like the idea of sticking with things, especially if we are passionate about them. And sometimes it may be only one more step to the top of the mountain!
Hey, Sara, your comment got me laughing – that would be one fun dance recital!
I wonder if they have acting improv for 8-year-olds?
Hey, Lane! Wow, 629 things on your list today. Me — just 628.
I think after I post this The Dishes will be first up.
Alice Audrey!! WHAT?? A grammy? Whoo-hoo. I will love to be a grammie one day. Sing songs with my sweet little ones. Drink beer with them when they are. Or 19, in Canada, of course.
Whooo — Hilary. I loved all those Xs and Os. Makes me feel a little less like the weirdest one in the blogosphere.
Thanks!! And you always send me sparkles, smiles, sweetness, light, laughter and love with your visits, and posts. Thank you!! Did you have your donut? We’re just about to have prawn cocktail for lunch — yummy!
GLENN. Oh. My. Goodness. LOOK WHO’S DROPPED IN!!! Wow, what a thrill to have you return. I’ve missed your kommints so much! Yep, 1-minute to write that. Oh, the violin — what a delicate hand and much patience that takes. Kelly took it for a couple weeks too. Screechy, scratchy. But she’s doing so well on piano. And gymnastics — wel, until she broke her arm (again.) X-ray this Thursday, hopefully she’ll get the go-ahead to start tumbling again.

I quit ballet before I started because my older sister did not like it. There was no extra money to do all these special classes when I was growing up. My parents did let me earn the money to do scouts and take voice lessons, but then then kept saying you will not have the money for college – and I bought my own clothes….
I never wanted to quit anything…except graduate school, where I thought I was in the wrong place for 4 years…and I was…but it was where I was accepted since I could not do the math…
I am twirling and twirling and I so enjoy being unique
