Speaking About My Wine-Drinking Tree…
Photography | Posted by Jannie on 20 September 2010 @ 8:48 PM 50 Comments

You’ll say “No way, Jannie! That tree beside you in the top picture is the SAME one as below!??”

And I’ll gulp more wine and say, “Yes, my peep, yes indeed, that’s the SAME tree. I planted it in 1994.”
(Different doggie, tho. Sweety the weiner is now 5.5 years old.)

And you’ll say, “Holy cow, Jannie! You still have your same foot?”
And I’ll say “Yes, I still have both my feet. And all else. (Pretty-much.)”
And you’ll say, “Show me you in the tree drinking wine again, Jannie! Please! Please!!”
And I’ll say “Sure! Here you go!”

And you’ll be dazzled beyond compare.
And I’ll smile and post yet another picture, this time of Kitty in the tree when he was just 4 months old, and already fancied himself a badass hunter!

(Kitty is now 3.5 years old.)
And still loves that tree.
And I love the tree.
And it loves me.
And I love you.
And I’ll sip more wine and publish this after 1 more picture of Kelly up there when she was wee…

And you’ll say, “Show me MORE tree, Jannie! Please, please!”
And I’ll say “All in due time, my peep, all in due time.
‘Cause I have like, 5000 pictures to show you.
And 75,000 more to take. (At least.)”
Okay, okay ONE more pic — but that’s it!
7 photos of the tree.
Lucky lucky 7.

ohh, I get to go first!! Yeehaw! and on such a fun post too! I too love your tree Jannie. They always give the love right back, so you have to smile in their presence. Smiles and giggles throughout my friend; (and that’s not just because i am too tired to barely see or read. Maybe one more glass of wine and I would’ve been sleeping already…
ok, nighty night for me.

Hi Jannie! What I really REALLY want to know is – how did you know that feeding trees wine makes them grow so fast!???? I just put several bottles of a good Merlot on the arbor vitae in my backyard to make a faster privacy “fence” so I don’t stare at the blessed swing set in my neighbors yard! (God I love the lake house views – wish I could just move this house there!)

Hi Jannie .. dunno how you do it .. finding photos – so angelic of the youthful Jannie from a mere 14 and a half years ago! & then Kelly .. aged ‘wee’ and all tied in safely – well knowing her propensity for fall off things – that was probably a wise move .. should have kept it up?!
More vino .. and more fun .. kitty kat obviously loves it too ..
See you soon .. two days – 23rd .. party time .. sounds fun .. hugs to all … Hilary

I used to have a tree I’d sit in
But I wasn’t drinking wine then
Alas it’s been gone for quite a while
But thinking of it still makes me smile
Happy day to you!

Dearest Katherine of Aged Oak & Linseed Oil — how awesome to see you first!! And so glad you enjoyed the little bit of humor I hoped would infuse this. BB says he hopes you had a refreshing good night of sleep??
Dearest Talon of the Sunshined Shasta Daisies — my wine drinking tree is full of glee, stretching now souundly over the fence to the neighbors’ yard. A kids’ song idea came to me yesterday “Grandma planted a tree.” About me, well based on me. Fun.
Dearest Anne of the Gleaming Glades — where would be be without trees? And bees? And knees? And peas. And peace?
Fleas — I could do without.
Dearest Jeanne of the Wandering Way — well, exactly WHAT were you talking about in the way of humor? My foot, right? My John Deere wine-drinking hat? My naughty streak coming out in the word badass?
Dearest Ellis of the Metered Meadows — ahh yes, indeed — the ageing of wood. Jim wants to tear the old deck out, so we’ll see how it develops with time. And funny, but the grey (newest) deck part was not put on until about year 2000, I think. (But I’d have to go back through many old pctures and use my brain to hopefully piece the chronology together.) And I mmight take a pic of me by the tree now — I’ve aged a bit too.
(But for the better — or course!)
Dearest Snaggle of the Crunching Leaf Piles, the tree is a Live Oak. I find the older it gets, the bigger the leaves get. Live Oaks are SUPER COOL, as they drop their leaves in spring, to push new ones out shortly thereafter! Funny – reverse program of deciduous land. OMG — going through all our old pix, there are so so so many.
Dearest Lynn of the Cotton Clouds, thanks! It’s amazing what a little sunlight through leaves can do for a pic. Was saying to Ellis above, I need to get me beside the tree next, sit as I did in the top one.
Hmmn, what’ll I wear for that??
Dearest Lance of Marathonning Merriment, has Jannie freshly painted toenails or not? Hmmn, is her foot photo fuzzy on purpose? Only Jannie knows for sure.
Kitty and wine? Umnnn, no, he prefers his wine from a Starbucks cup, with a straw in the hole. And he only drinks while lazing in his hammock.
Dearest Tess of the Emboldened Embassy of Emotionally Excellent stuff — Yes, and we have WAY chopped the branches off over the years to keep it away from the roof line. Oh — I LOVE your idea for the tree. Thinking my next CD cover and art will encompass me in that tree!! Love you too!

Dearest Suzen, have trees any preference for Merlot, Cabernet or Pinot Noir, to your knowledge?? Oooo, and I love that word — arbor vitae. Living tree, or plants, I think that would translate to? Ahhh, swing set — all our modern visual pollution. Are there birches at your lakehouse??
My Dearest Hilary of the Cobblestoned Cliffs, well… I did spend a good 3 hours yesterday on photos, picking my fave old ones from what’s morphed back into a jumble again. And organizing a bunch of digital ones into “House Remodeling” and “Art Abundant” folders, the latter being anything pretty that’s not specifically about house before and afters. And I confirmed via one of my old hard-drives Kelly was 5 in the in the tree, spring-time, and funny — same outfit she wore in this post… (Sorry, can’t pull up my own Umlauf Sculpture Garden” post. What did I title that?
Poor Kelly — all 3 broken arms happened via things that are suppossed to be FUN… a makeshift slide on a sofa, monkey bars, and a bouncy house. What the heck!?!?!
Oh Dearie me.
Dearest Linda of the Rosey Rainbowed River,
My favorite all-time tree was Old Chestnut. Man — was that the most awesome tree, or what?? All 4 seasons we’d climb it. So sad lightening did it in. But Dad has other chestnuts getting pretty tall now!!

Dearest Vered — this is an AMAZING planet for growing things. I tried it on Mars but high-tailed it back here.
Dearest? Dearest… Well, oh my blessed Lord above, I cannot believe my ears, eyes and all else. Could it really be? IS is? Can it possibly be the one, the only, Jennifer Susannah Devore?! Wait, let me click over to be sure. Hang on… Well, it IS, it IS, it IS! She lives and breathes — yahoo! The Grand Californian!? If that’s like the Grand Floridian I’ll be there tonight with wine by the tallest palm!
Dearest Secret Agent Woman, you must have a great green thumb! Growing things just makes me so happy.
Dearest Laura Hegfield. How lovely to see you again! My husband must appear in the tree next, or beside it!
Or the whole fam.
Dearest Dr. J. What happened in 1996? Did you get your blackbelt then? Did you climb to the top of Everest? Did you win fandango contests the world over?? “)
Dearest Val — and I’m all WOW because you are back again to grace me with a visit. Thank you. And I mentioned I’ve been to Wales, right? Yep — I even saw Dylan Thomas’ writer’s shed. I guess you’ve seen it too!
Dearest Patricia, what is this WE stuff? You gone MPD on me now??
Well, I forgot to mention songwriting too, I am spending quite a lot of time on that. But — I guess some people just LOVE my comment answering here, and that is a good good thing. It is hard to lose a beloved tree. When lightning hit Old Chestnut I thought my best friend had died. Woodpeckers are kinda rare here. I wonder why? Glad you liked the pix! 80,000 more to go!
Dearest Teahouseblossom, and I take FULL responsibility for each inch of its helght and girth!
Dearest Glenn — you never need explain any Pink Floyd reference to me. Or Rolling Stones, or Spongebob. I know them all! Your comment is so sweet and funny. Thanks. Sometimes it can take over 2 hours per post to answer comments, so I am scoping out what plan might best work for Funstertown. Glad you’ll be back!
Dearest Audra, well, one night in Cork, Ireland by a sliver of moon a bunch of my ancestral farmers recited pledges to be ever light-hearted, and they passed it on down the line. I guess??
Dearest Jeanne, Jeanne, Jeanne of D’s Pizza Shop… did the mice clean? I wish they would here instead of messing it up while I sleep. Oh yes, — do try the clouds. I’ll send you the JPEG!! I think it will TOTALLY go with anything. Do you want my bright pink peace sign seamless background too?
Dearest LLCoolJoe. Um, I think I have changed just a tad, but thanks!! A lot!
I’m not very good at accepting a compliment, am I.
Dearest Kim, hi and thanks a bunch. I see you have a gardening survey over there at your site — sounds fun. More tree pix coming. Stay tuned!
Is that G-Man, Dearest G-Man — a FOOT man?
No wait — you like close-ups of pots of impatiens? No wait — you are a fan of seeing tree trunks growing out of holes in decks!! YESSSSSSS. That must be it.

Dearest Daisy — You remind me to look for more pix. I have quite a few of its progress. Yes — some wild parties in its infancy. Lot of birds and squirrels in it now. I saw a big big nest of some kind way up high in it the other day — squirrel I think. he is not happy when kitty approaches. I imagine he throws acorns down as ammunition! Or she, perhaps. And what?? Behind on reading blogs??
