The Corner Cabinet That Love Built
House Style, Photography | Posted by Jannie on 28 February 2011 @ 2:11 PM 67 Comments

Hey, Friends!
On the way back from dropping Kelly at school this morning I bought that nail polish!
This summer I’m sure I’ll get a bottle of red for dramatic flair, but for now l’ll ease my toes softly into spring!

I also bought new mousse, hairspray and…

root goop — the latter which I’m sitting here with on my head as I type this.
So I better type fast! The timer goes off in another 7 minutes.
Luckily all the pix are already in here, just to add a few words.

I bought kitty foods too. He gets half a can of that a day, plus his dry Iams.
Hey, do you guys recognize where the green flowers and clear plastic vase came from??

So, that’s how the shelf now looks now, directly above.
(Yep, no more beauty products or kitty foods on it.)
Kelly painted those 2 plastic fairies when she was 4.
And did the marbly-bead creations at age 6. Maybe 7.

That’s how the shelf looked several months ago with my iPhone, directly above.
See — I took that ”before” because I KNEW one day I’d finally get My Amazing Camera, which would entice me to tidy.
And photograph.
Which it has!
And next, another “before” – the upper shelf…

Now see how it looks at this very minute…

Ahhhhhh.
Jim designed and built this dining room corner cabinet himself.
He did the floor and ceiling too.
The dining room used to be an old bedroom we busted through to the kitchen, c. 1997-1998.
Yes — pix of the construction one day.
Darn, there goes the timer!
Ah, what will another couple minutes matter?
And the whole shebang today…

That cool scallop-shell thing on top Jim made with plaster of Paris, from a mold of an old shell we got at an antique store in Maine in 1991.
Friends, I am liking the quality of this new camera, even tho I still don’t really know how to work it!!
And I bet Jim and Kelly will like this new-found tidying streak in me!!
He’ll wonder why he waited so long to get me the camera!
Now… to that hair goop rinsing.
I wanna sing you guys one of my new songs on video soon, so I must look my best.
Posted with love, by me, Jannie
And BB sends love too. He’s still busy selling his “treets” up at the top of the driveway– made 10 cents already today!!

Go get that goop off your hair right now! Yikes.
Beautiful cabinet – Jim did a good job. And you made it all pretty with the plates and flowers and such. Good picture taking, too.
Good for BB for selling his treats. xo

The corner
where life
touches both sides
Where things that
go around come around
Where the right or the left
are just points of view
Where things meet
in the middle
Where things take sides
on conmen ground
Where nothing’s equal
no matter how hard one try
I’ve faced it many of times
not to really see it
and never learned what
I should have already known
The corner that love built

Dear Lynn, I got the goop off and I think my roots pass the muster once again.
The package called for 25-35 minutes and I was rinsing right at 30!! Jim plans to do another cabinet in Canada. He’s good at them, that’s for sure. Oh yes, BB was up tp 35 cents last time I spoke to him, bout an hour ago.
Betsy. I know how you love the house before and afters, and I’m sooooo happy to have a good camera now for sharing. I see this camera has F and A factors, ISO and other mysterious settings for me to explore. Fun, fun, fun. Oh, and yes, once I decided on the color for the “Bermuda” dining room the Desert Rose dishes were it for me!
Ellis your poem is so lovely, I’m not sure where to start with it! Round and round and meeting and equal and such. Your words are lovely to read indeed. And once I was in a house with NO corners, cool modern spaceship kinda place, just a little south of Austin. Really neat to experience.

Have BB send me three boxes of Cracker Jacks,
for I am in a munchy mood I tell you. That
new camera takes some very classy pics.
Makes a can of cat food look like classic
still life. I like the fact that such a jewel
is out there for under 500 bucks.
Another wet lipped kudo to big Jim
for excellent craftsmanship. One never
really knows where the Jannie will take
us today. It was a gas to hang out
in your cabinet for a time.

All that love piling up and overflowing and now into the arts of reference…yes! go get that goo out of your hair…very tidy.
Gramma Knox who took care of me on Friday’s as a wee child had those same dishes and every time I see them I think of her and her bread baking on Fridays and the smell of her house. She also did cinnamon rolls for Sunday mornings – that smell is tickling my nose right now…
Jim created a lovely spot right there in the corner…and you and Kelly did some precious design work too.
Thank you for sharing

He’s done a wonderful job of the cabinetry. But you know what I love most about this post? How proud you obviously are of him
I love witnessing this. Thanks for sharing Jannie.

Hi Jannie .. love the extras on the shelves and corner cupboard as a whole – one clever, clever man .. and no wonder you and Kelly love him to bits. It looks so pretty – the plates .. if they are Desert Rose are beautiful .. and the matching nail polish .. everything matching – you’ll have Martha Stewart round soon .. or Good Housekeeping .. mind you they won’t need a camera – yours takes wonderful photos. Kelly’s marble plaques are rather beautiful .. So all in all one cleverly managed family – BBs doing a good job – getting the dusting done, putting up his charge’s pictures, anniversary flowers, getting Jim to do extras with the cupboard – love the shell topping! And BBs out there earning .. what more can the mistress with her shell pink toes want …??
Enjoy the rest of the week .. no stressing with the duster, and plenty more pics .. cheers for now – Hilree xoxoxoxox

I should’ve gone to bed an hour ago, but had to see the newbie pics. really nice shots for a greenhorn, I think.
I’m Most impressed with the inset lighting in the cabinet, especially how it plays off those hanging teacups! L like the seashells, n especially like Kelly’s Mosaic pies, they are way cool!
A beautiful little cabinet oasis you’ve now got there, n nice dishes too!

Dearest Glenn, 3 boxes of cracker jacks on their way soon.
I do LOVE cracker jacks. I wonder what prizes they put in them these days? Can’t wait to find out, whooohooo. Glenn! We paid only $200 for the camera!! Glad you had fun in our cabinet — we aim to please. And maybe one day I’ll even show you what’s inside those 2 little doors at the bottom.
Dearest Patricia, ahhhh, Grandma Knox, what a lovely lady she must’ve been. And funny, but I’ve never been in your house, obviousy, but I think it must always smell so great of baking and stewing and such. Yes, I was so pleased when I happened upon the pinkish plates. I bought some here, and guess what?? Got some “seconds” from the factory when I was over in England in 1999. Boy, did those weigh a lot in my carry-on, but I got them back here!
Hey, Dearest Aimee, well my hair is looking quite lovely, I do believe.
Nice lighter roots again to match the rest of my fluffy tresses.
Yes, Jimmy and his wood details — he’s the man. And do you know the name of the trim color? “Coastal Beige.” Yep. I forget who it’s by, either Sherwin Williams or Behr. Oooo what’ll I photograph next? I’ll have to go into my stacks of old pix for befores. Fun!
Hey, Dearest Davina — yes, I was quite amazed at these pix, considering the onmly light source was from the door / window on the other side of the room, and from the little inset lights. I do not like photos by flash, so Im happy so far! Lots to learn yet about this camera. Yes, I do like how what Jim builds and how I decorate them, I think we do complement each other very well. He really is a sweetie. I am proud of him!! And of my new Kodak.
Hi Dearest Alice Audrey! It’s Desert Rose, by…. and teh back of a diner plate reads “Franciscan, an authentic design classic by Johnson Brothers, made in England. Dishwasher and microwave safe.” And I LOVE it!!! We sponge-painted the walls the color of sand in Bermuda. I’m in the room right now! I
ve decided to computerize here in the day instead of my big soft living room chair, I thinkk this is better for my back not to be so slumped. And I’m burning more calories sitting upright, I do believe!!
Dearest Hilary, isn’t the cabinet lovely. Jim’s made several in his day and this is his favorite (probably because I had design input on it. )
he is such an artiste, and I’m so so so lucky. Yes, Desert Rose, and I brought a bunch of “seconds” back from The Potteries in 1999. I was probably so close to you — maybe passed you on a street somewhere. Hey, I think eventually I SHALL submit before and afters to magazines. Yes, indeed. Now, that I’ve got that camera….
Yes, Kelly had fun doing the marble plaques. They’re meant to go in a garden, according to the package, but I like them inside and out of the weather. Yes, what would I Do without BB?!??! All that arranging and tidying for me!!
Folks, I must zip away, the dogs are pining at me to take them for a walk.
I’ll take to the rest of you sweeties later!!!

I have a light green color- same brand of the nail color. It’s hard for me to believe that I don’t know you n you’ve clicked everything the way I have been doing it so far- hahahaha
You’ll learn about the camera tricks soon! These images are fabulous and post as many as you can for me to gaze at..

Darling Snaggle. Maybe next time you could pull up my post, go paint for an hour and come back to see my pix!? Sorry it took an hour. Hope you are well rested as you read this? Oh, you remind me — I must turn to FACE the cabinet as I type this, instead of facing the fishtank that needs cleaning, and the floor repair that’s under construction.
But luckily Jim has a good start on fixing the wood that got leaked on, and buckled. I think this greenhorn got lucky! Had fun earlier snapping shots, while walking the dogs. I LOVE THE ZOOMING IN FEATURE!!!!!! whoooohoooo. Yes, I should show how the outlet is tucked in neatly off to the bottom left of the bottom shelf, behind the plate. Jim did a lovely job, indeed!! And I notice a cuphook way in the back, middle with nothing on it. What, oh, what, could I hang on it?
Yes, shells for my Bermuda dining room, whoooohooo.
Dear SuZen, yes, it’s lovely. And I’m now turned to face the front of the house, here in the dining room, with the corner cabinet at 2:00, the front window at 12:00 and the kitchen at 9:00.
Yes, I need to find my buffing thingy and get my toesies smoothed out a bit. My cuticles are all nicely ready I think!
I’ve even been pushing back my finger cuticles — now that I have My Amazing Camera, and I never know when a hand shot might work its way into view.
I most likely will not paint my finger nails, tho. Or maybe. you just never know what crazy thing I’ll get up to next.
Dearest Lovely Jewel — thanks. And as soon as Jim is done with the kitchen floor repair, the back deck area, the floor for The Final Living Room, hauling off the trash, building Kelly’s shelves, building a custom desk area with shelves for his “office” I’ll send him right over to you!!!
Jannie — hello!
Dearest Olivia — whoooohoooo, my new pix precede themselves.
yay, beyond my wildest dreams this Kodak Z981. can’t wait to upload and look at the 30 or so I took just a while ago. Got my memory card, whoooohooo. And I experimented between Portrait and General setting today, I hope I remember which pix were taken with which — I guess I could write it down on paper next photo session. Learning.
Olivia, where do you live? Somewhere where they sell that polish in light green!
I bet your shells are lovely!! Where did you get them?
Linda!! My dearest — hello again. yes, yes, and yes to what you said!! He really is a gifted craftsman, I love his style. Jim’s dad was an Episcopalian minister who liked doing woodwork too. I remember a sweet little maple and walnut end table he made that Jim’s mom kept by her bed. So sweet. I imagine one of my sisters-in-laws has it. Be nice to photograph. Or maybe Jim and I have it? I have no idea. Seriously. In Canada. But that’s anotehr story for another day. Sadly, Jim’s dad died when Jim was 22 (the year I was born.) lol on that last bit, 22 years.
Dearest Talon!! now BB’s added lemonade to his inventory! He should do well today when it warms up. When he comes in for a potty break I shall have to ask him to upload my new pix, while I take my bath!!!

Ellis, that YouTube won’t load on my iPhone, boohoo. Will have to wait til later at home. Meantime I shall guess! It’s either Sinatra, Gordon Lightfoot, Roger Whittaker, Kenny Rogers or Minnie Ripperton. Wonder if I came close at all on any?? I do actually like all those artists!
Hi, Dear Lisa, it’s fun hearing so many of you know folks with that china! I thought I was the only one.
ahhhh, dinner in Austin– I’ll be doing that tonight! Steak maybe. Wanna pick up some beer. Slug one, then have a cup if tea. Hair needs a trim, song needs the last verse, second half.

Hi Olivia! India — awesome. Great place. Lovely people. I am not familiar with HOLI. I have not explored the settings too much more. But maybe tomorrow, check out the online tutorials and such.

Hello Jannie Bananie xxx
Orange Day – wow that sounds amazing
I think we need one of those days here in the good old U.K.

Nasty night flying bugs I do not like, but they find me rather tasty where ever I go in the world
San Antonio is one of my favourite memories of all time, the 3 of us singing all the way there – eating the taco bell thingy bob wasn’t as memorable though.
I sing all the time while cooking, cleaning, washing, walking just simply all the time & the occasional Karaoke when I’ve had 1 too many vodkas :O
We sold the home in Turkey 2 years ago & I dress as Elvis all the time, it makes me very happy
Skpe me mrs, its most defiantly the way forward xoxoxoxo

Ahhhhh, Jo, did we sing all the way to San Antonio? Poor Pascell — she hated that “grotty” Toyota Supra we were in that day. I was looking at that pic of me at The Alamo the other day, with the dogs on leashes. So many GRRRRRRREAT photos of us all together.
Us by the bronze statue of the old men in Zilker Park.
Me and Pascell in front of the Texas Capitol.
Me, Jimmy, you, Andy and your mom and dad at that pub in your village.
Today I labeled the first of my big envelopes to put my friends’ pix in, one envelope per pal. Your’s is all labeled!!! And I put drew THREE hearts on the front! You shall have to come over and sing harmony for my back-up in the studio. Great thing is — we can e-mail the Mp3s back and forth to learn the tunes!
I sing ALL the time too, going now to the bath and will no doubt do my voice exercises in there. Freaking sore throat is finally gone. Still, I have to go gently. Did 15 minutes what I call “Vex” (Voice EXercises yesterday, and 10 minutes a few days ago, whoooohooooo.) I am kicking some vocal arse!
gently, gently we go.
Does Andy speak to you on your dressed-as-Elvis days??
Occupation Street still, right??
TACL BELL SUCKS!!! I CANNOT believe we could possibly eat there. What the freak??? Did I go stark ravers nuts to make you eat there??
I do remember Joe The German taking Pascell for a burger. Geez, she was Kelly’s age about, the last time you guys were over here.
Luckily we gave Joe The German the boot 2 years ago. I think he reads this blog, tho.
Okay, okay, you’ll drag me singing and dancing into the 21st century with that skype thing…

Ello!!!
I also have to agree that the Toyota Supra was an awful car, but hey it got us there & we had much fun that day
And this make me very happy

Thank goodness you know exactly how my humour works…
the builders are doing a little bit more to our kitchen extension, which seems to have been going on for 2 years, OH yeah I remember, it has been 2 years
We are very slow movers
I think its called plodding along !!! But I'm sure when it is finished it will be the most perfect kitchen extension in the whole wide world… :O
sounds like a plan to me…
Yes we did sing all the way there & Pascell loved joining in with us
I’m a very lucky girl to have 3 hearts on the envelope with the splendid pics in <3 <3 <3
The fact is Andy speaks to me more on my "dressed as Elvis" days, I think this confirms that not only am I purely bonkers, but so is he
Yes its still very much Occupation Street !!! :/
I think Pascell was probably a similar age to what Kelly-welly-gog is now & wouldn't it be just the best thing ever if we met up sooner than later – time sure does fly by when ya having fun
Aha… Joe the German if I remember was a guy with a great personality & was very friendly & a laugh to be around… If I remember correctly he took my husband to a place where ladies do gentlemen favour :/ HAHA A memory to tell the grandkids when they arrive
I'm have a boring day
Then I will be doing some much needed ironing, yawn, yawn, yawn…
After this is down I think I will do 6 cart wheels in the garden & 4 handstands…
I look forward to being your backing singer
Hope you had a lovely bath & vocal exercise…
love you lots like vodka shots xoxoxox

Jo, Jo, Jo, Jo, Jo — yes I’ve been putting just one heart on all the other envelopes, but the mere thought of your name is at LEAST a 3-heart moment.
Ahhhhh, so the Elvis in you brings out Andy’s talkativeness — makes sense. Jim talks more to me too when I’m in my Mother Theresa get-up.
Ah, Jo — did ya ever get out of the shower and there’s no towel on the rack??
Freezin’… Sneezin’….. I’ve only ever heard YOU sing that, so how could I ever forget it??
Occupation Street — got it, Baby. So I know where to send that letter I started in January, 2010. Or was it 2009? Yikes. And my CD, of course!!
Yes, sooner than later for a meet, my love! I would LOVE that!!!!! And Kelly would too. She wants to travel so badly.
Crap — did I not know or just forgot about the place Joe The German took Andy? Yikes. I prefer a nice pub with lots of beer and folks fully dressed.
Wow, ONLY 2 years for a kitchen??? What’s your secret to doing it so fast???
I think Jimmy took 4 years on ours.
Shit — I haven’t ironed since 2002.
My old red bra was the last thing.
Did have a lovely bath. Might have another today!! And even wash me hair.
Did some voice warm-ups, and did a little dance under the water.
And hey, what do you think of me new song so far…
1.
Where are the girls on banana seat bicycles
who used to fly down the street
singing songs all summer long
girls with no shoes on their feet
Where are the ones we used to run with
down to the beach to lie in the sun with
Where are the ones we were sure
we always would know
and we told them so
in the summertime glow
so long ago
2.
Where are the girls on banana seat bicycles
who used to knock on our door
Are they in Spain, are they in Maine
or down at the Jersey Shore
Where are the ones we used to dream with
sit on the porch and eat ice cream with
Where are the ones who drifted away some how
when the leaves turned brown
and fell to the ground
and snow came down
Bridge:
Jeanne’s was green, mine was blue
we tied tinsel to the spokes and handlebars too
laughing laughing, top of the ferris wheel
I remember how those bikes made us feel
3.
If I had a banana seat bicycle
You could ride double with me
We’d go cruisin’ any place of our choosin’…..

Question from Jannie to me !!!
“How would you put the food tray down on a aeroplane if your knees bent the other way”
I really don’t know the answer to this & it still puzzles me greatly :/
But I think if it was a long haul flight I’d be very hungry
Love you, you crazy poopsicle xoxoxoxox

Well Jannie I’ve given it much thought and I don’t know what the chair would look like if your knees bent the opposite way
I also have know idea, but it sounds either painful or pleasurable, I’m still trying to make my mind up on that one
What does a banana seat look like on a bicycle
Also the other thing I’ve wanted to ask you in a long time is – when you where at school, did a nurse come in to check your hair & hands?

At my school she would check our hands to see if we bite them and checked our hair for insects, we called her ” Nitty Nora The bug Explorer” Did you give yours a name?
I think the boys had a more thorough checking over than the girls so I’m thankful in that way that I’m a girly
Still missing you more than chocolate cake.
And lets make a date to meet in Carbo with our 2 girls soonish xoxoxo

Nope, but we had Mrs Smith in Grade Four
And she would rap our hands with a ruler
if we did not have
“clean, clean nails, and a hanky.”
I swear to fucking god!
I had some great teachers, tho. Don’t know how they ever put up with me, most of them.
Ahhh, but I’ve turned out somewhat okay, I think??
I know YOU have!
Well, I think I’m gonna find a rainbow for Blue Bunny, BB, as you are nodoubt becoming eerily aware of.
