On Poetry In Maine
Poetry | Posted by Jannie on 19 April 2011 @ 4:55 PM 74 Comments

There was a poem forming
from the mood particles in me,
a Little Bang on our back deck.
But I shifted my feet and my
thoughts, the wind picked up
and molecules of hologram
eddied up and away on paths
never before or since traveled
in my backyard or any other,
not even on lawns by the ocean
in Maine where I imagine every
poem dreamed up not only gets
completed, but published in
The Lilac Times, then sketched
into blueprints for butterflies
who will dance around children
gathering cathedrals of seaweed
on beaches made of stars & time.

Top photo, Kelly and her cousin, Crescent Beach, Nova Scotia, 2008. (50 pixels wider than the first time I posted it, whooohoooo!)
Other photo, on our back deck this morning.

Poem offering for One Shot Wednesday. over at One Stop Poetry.

A little bang…now there’s a way of describing inspiration. But what better description is there for that strike of creativity? The spark? Sounds lovely though, and certainly like your day was going right…sometimes those carefree mornings are the best of things.

First, I LOVE your sense of humor (Claudia’s blog you commented “Never met a bear I wasn’t enchanted to dance all night with.” HAHAHAH!
Second, you are really a talented Peep! This line, like ‘Dream on, dreamer!
You wrote:

How TRUE! If I could but remember HALF of my Pulitzer Prize-winning thoughts throughout a given day–I could rule the world–grin! (And that kind of thinking is what put me down on the mat!
I’m glad to come back here, it might become another of my bad habits–grin!
Mine is #50, last time I checked on OSW…

Oh Jannie of Austin, your poetry
sings better than even you do,
and the words out soar the birds
and butterflies that buzz you there
on the back deck. I love the lines
/sketched into blueprints for
butterflies/ and /children gathering
cathedrals of seaweed/; better
and better you become by the
minute; and minutes in Funsterville,
TX can be mighty long.

I like the rambling feel that disguises the twists and turns of the message, and the language and imagery are extremely on target; especially liked the last two stanzas. nice one, Jannie–so many of my poems blow away before I can write them–I hope they’re caught in a seaweed cathedral somewhere.

Brian, you ARE a butterfly. And stretching your soul, talent and time in bloggy and Real Life. Thank you!
Dear Chris G, it is my honor to see you here. Yes, not the Big Bang, but a spark of some poem, one that got away, but replaced by this one.
Dear Anonymous Steve E. Oh, anonymous one, let me consult my divining rod … You play violin, dance with bears and fling your brilliance everywhere. Your visits are treats.
Glenn, Glenn,Glenn! Thank you, thank you so much. I have poetry tricks you know, and lately I’ve not been afraid to use them.
Hedgewitch! You got it. A poem on the tip of my mind, then zip, away. But luckily for us poetic types, always more words and thoughts on the way. I cant wait to see what you’ve written. Your poetry is a true gift.
Thank you lovely darling ayala! And did I mention you are a new-found treasure in my blogging life?!
Leslie, in retrospect, I wish I’d photoshopped butterflies all around Kelly and Alyssa, but there were only so many hours in this day!! I just read Olive Kitteridge, thus the Maine twist!! But meet me in Maine! Portland is lovely. Oh, no Lilac Times, that I know of.
Andy! What did I say over at your blog?? I must pop back and see! Thank you. And I see you’ve been commenting on previous posts, thank you. You must be an awesome awesome human being.
Dear Daisy, ah thanks, my dear. I shall totally completely endeavor to get my stanzas better and better. I actually think I maybe am getting to be a poet now!
Hi Lori and thanks! I did work on that last part a bit more than the rest of the poem with my lists of words. I guess work is It!!
Hey, thanks L.L. Barkat, My original thought was The Lilac & Lily Times, but it made the line too long.
Gotta fly for now…..

Hi Glynn! Welcome. And thanks for your visit and comment. Blueprints of butterflies yes, and baskets of all the best wishes of dreams that come true.
Dearest Jo who has popped and dropped by. I took Kelly to Mt Bonnell yesterday, remember we drove way up, then parked, and climbed the 105 steps to the view of Austin. But now there is a big house blocking a lot of the view, boohoo — one with SIX air conditioning units out back. Geez. Why do things have to change. But changing our toe paint is good — I’m a deep park coral now, no diamantes on mine, tho. Ooo beer, haven’t had any in days. had soem red wine on Sunday and Monday, tho. had easter candy last night. Yep, Kelly’s fine. She’ll get her staples out tomorrow, we’ll wait the full 14 days for maximum benefit. Lots of hugs and kisses back at ya!!
Dearest my Lyn, we all and everything is made of stars and time, stirred with love. Ahhh, just a few words I flung together for you all.
Ooooo, Dearest Joanny, how did you possibly know that’s my life dream? And to win an Oscar for Best Song, and a Toni for Best Play. And a donut just for being in the right place at the right time!! Thanks, doll!
Hi Dearest Shan! That’s the great thing about poems, art, songs and such — we can travel far without ever leaving our spot. Ain’t it THE BEST thing!! Thanks for popping in!!
Hi Mattison! You made it over, how cool!! Ain’t the Wednesday One Stop the BOMB!! Thank you my dear — I am honored at your visit here.
Dearest Claudia — I yearn for the ocean every day. But you take me on rivers and lakes with your words, so that’s why I’m one of your biggest fans!!

I remember visiting Nova Scotia back in the early 70s. My parents, an aunt & uncle and a great aunt and me all piled into Daddy’s 1965 Bonneville and took the Blue Nose ferry out of Bar Harbour. The weather was rough and it was a long 6 hours, and I wasn’t feeling so well. Once landed however, I ate an enormous cheeseburger accompanied by a ton of french fries. Apparently I suffered no lasting effects of the voyage. Everything was so beautiful and clean and fresh.

I love that this made me think that a poem lived is maybe better than a poem captured in writing. I’ve had poems that gave me goose bumps in my head only to fizzle out when I try to two-dimensionalize them. Seems you feel that way, too, sometimes…I’m in good company. And I love even more that you turned it into poetry.

Hi my dear Rainy day singing Norwegian black-bra finding friend — Adrenalynn! Always great to see you in our Funstering midst!
Dearest Laura — I was thinking of you today — but that’s no big surprise, you are very thinkable, my sweet friend.
Hi Versebender, so awesome you followed me back here — I enjoyed your site a lot. Well, there’s more of this blues-chasing stuff to be had here on a regular basis, so come back, ya hear??!!
Hi Belinda — yes, a lot of times if I don’t capture an idea right away it does escape as fast as it came. But… I know there will always be more thoughts passing through me I can capture and expound upon. And often 20% inspiration, 80 perspiration — yes, really. Sometimes I do have to WORK on a poem.
HELENA!!!! NO WAY!!!!! You know those places, cool!! hubby was born and raised in NS, me in NB. You do fall in love with those NS places, don’t you!! Oh, I am so happy to meet you — and like that fancy font thing you do on your name! Oh, did you get to Lunenburg too?
Well, hi Victoria — what an honor to have you pop over. I actually live in Texas, and have for almost 21 years, but my first 26 years were spent in my native Canada, right next to Maine. And where do YOU live??
Moonie, Dear!! yes, Blue Bunny is enchanted with the Maine butterflies. He’s uup tehre now, waiting to sight a monarch or two, but I think it’s a bit early in the year for that.
And ahhhhh, you see the sweetest thangs. Thanks.
Ahhh, Angela, I like your thougghts on the butterflies you shall see. Now, that’s good poetic inspiration in action. I love how we all inspire eachother and are happier in our art for it!!
Hi C Rose — we here at Funsterment Global aim for plenty of destraction for you in posts 3x weekly. Thanks a bunch for popping over for the One Shot!
Hey, Rhymie Smiler!! And I shall try to rhyme in all my comments over at your place. is blogging FUN, or what!?!! Ah, thanks on everything.
Snaggle — how wonderful you still have all that greening to look forward to. Wish we could turn back time 2 months here and start spring all over again. Amazing season. It was a funny day that beach day. Had been hot like 80 degrees in town , and was about 65 and windy on the shore. Oh, I miss that place SO MUCH. Will I get home this summer? Plane tickets cost SO much. We’ll see. See how it unfolds.
Liara!! Hi, I was just saying to Snaggle, I wish to get to NS this summer. SO MUCH!! You’ve been to Crescent Beach, I’m sure? And the little island at the end of it. Belle Isle, is it? LaHave Island? Well, it’s just charming!! Went to a party there one time. I miss the NS South Shore SO much. You goign back this summer? Yes, memories await, and so many family fun together.
Hi KB!! NEW Zeland. NEW Scotland. It’s all the same. And nothing like a beach, eh? I envy you and your wild ocean life!! Oh, and YAY!! Your birthday is still to come, yay!! It’s my lucky day not to have missed it.
And there is another new poetry pal — Patchwork Linda. hi!! thanks so much. I’m glad that “beaches made of stars and time” line ended up nicely. I think I changed it up a couple of times until it resonated true to me.
Wow, what a great response on my little poem. I’m humbled at all the visits and lovely words. Thanks.

Dearest Sonny, whom I do not really know, but DO know, if you catch my We Are All One & Such drift… hi! Your comment makes the waves in my ocean of contentment roll with happy dolphins — thanks!!
Dearest Alegria, your debut comment here leaves me feeling like all the Universe is singing today, old jazz and folk tunes mostly. Thank you!! I also noticed a cathedral of oak leaves on the drive here to the library.
Dearest Radhika, ahhh, but my new friend, your “attempt at a poem” stood on its owl legs and flew me to my favorite cafe on Jupiter — thank YOU!!! I am still transitioning myself, but I find myself more than not, being nice to myself and turning my moods of “should” into moods of “could.” And acceptance.
Dearest Violet, when I was in my early 20s I thought Being Published would be the pinnacle of life. Now, just writing a poem or two that I like are reward enough for me. The Lilac Times is always at hand, and a very fine place to exist!
Dearest Arts Web chef, rocker, monocled et al, Sir Richard Dude. Thank you! I think I finally am hitting a some poetic formula that works well with the moonlight and chocolate wafers available to me.
Adrenalynn!!
you ROCK!!
Dearest Salem L., well the stars and beaches of time were lined up nicely for this one yes. It was originally to be titled “the one that got away” Thanks so much for the commenting!!
Dearest River — I thank you for your words. And I think my next 5-stanza poem shall have rivers of enchantment running from the git-go!!
Dearest Cathleen, which ocean did you grow up at? Thank YOU, for sharing your sketching writing waterside childhood memory. I love how poetry can take us places.
Dearest Kim, yes, you get the point of this very very well. One got away, but birthed possibly a better one. Oh, and I bet your pen gets only better and clearer with time — that’s the beauty of it!!
Dearest Olivia, yes, I used to try to forced poems a bit, but have discovered it really all is in the mood, the feel I’m in. All I have to do is let the words form themselves. Yes, — the soaps!!!!!! Your letter still unwrittten, but a poem itself waiting for the tickle of love to write it. Well, the lawn is not as pretty as it once was, and will be again — but our trees and sky are always a sight to photograph!
Dearest Kelly who bears the same name as our one and only daughter — and spells it the same! I do remember your site’s beauty. And I’ve visited and commented on almost ALL the One Stop Ones now for this week, think I have about 30 left to go, which I shall enjoy popping in on after I post this. Your blueness and jewelry made me breathe in that all is well and art is always here on this beautiful planet for enjoying. Thank you for your visit and comment!!
Dearest Vinay — ah, thanks so much. I’m gonna think of continuing on this vein of short and impactful poems — IF it is to unfold that way.
Dulce! I am enjoying the back deck while its still not too hot to be out. The leaves fill in more every year, and I’m thankful for how they help keep the house a degree cooler each year as I sit out there! But I find I can create anywhere quiet. You know what I mean? Quiet and peaceful places for poems, and writing in general.
Dearest Anita, you are so kind to visit and comment! I was sooooo happy to share these thoughts and images with you all. Looking at that beach sky here on the library computer today, to me it seems like fresh denim of perfect jeans that will fade beautifully over the next 20 years.
And there is Debra Elliott just before I was about to hit Post on this. Hi! Thank YOU!! How did I live without participating in One Shot Wednesday for the first 40 weeks????

Jannie, I agree. The similarities between our poems are definitely a case of poetic synchronicity. I love the magical quality of yours – and how it’s about poetry. It’s well-structured, and there’s not a stanza that doesn’t have something I like.

Nice piece, Jannie. Esp like the tercets structure and the hint of midline rhyme you throw in. Elegantly penned.

Oh. My. Goodness. Look at all these comments that have drifted up on my welcoming shore!
Thank you Haiku of the lovely hibiscus gravatar. It seemed almost too simple an idea. But works, I guess!
Hello Dear LBTL also of a very lovely gravatar design! So, where is your first paradise? Love and live, indeed. The essence of all to me.
Hey Monkey Man! Early? Late? Either / either, or.
It’s all a never ending flow of words and water.
Hey Alice Audrey! I took a pic of the paint to show you all close-up but was not 100% satisfied with the long-lasting art quality of it,but will do a redo. The color is kind of a metallic hibiscus / deep rose funsterment. Not my favorite ever, but it’s fun to experiment.
Ahhhh thanks, Reggie. I really appreciate your kind comment. And visit. POETRY ROCKS!!!!!!!! And always will. Actually,I think poets, not politicians rule the world.
Hi upinthecosmos! Cool name. from Jannie — downinthecosmos.
Description can really paint a mural, eh?!
Hey, Mr Walker! Thanks for popping on over. Yes, it still marvels me at some of the parallels in our poems this week. Funny, my poem last week too was about writing poetry. Maybe one day I’ll publish a book of poems on poems!
Oh Dearest Talon! Yes, skies of blue. I wonder how many different shades of blue exist for skies? And ocean? Birth of a poem, whooohooo. Birth of my friendship with you many many many moons ago — whooohooo.
Dearest Luke of warm salad loving. I must say the only salad I like warm is sauer kraut.
How interesting, I never even noticed any hints of inner rhyme. Now, I’ll have to go back and read. I started doing the tercet thing I guess when I got deeply into Billy Collins. Warmest Salad to YOU too!
And boiling ice cream.
G-Man! Yes, and not even a close-up of them. How naughty am I??!!
And how are your legs? Feeling less pain? Tried the soap in the sheets?

I’ve only been to Maine once, and it was while we were headed back from Nova Scotia. In July, but still very cool most days.
