14 guys in kilts — a poem in 55 words
Flash Fiction 55, Photography, Poetry | Posted by Jannie on 22 April 2011 @ 5:55 AM 41 Comments

on an April morning smelling on and off
of maple fudge boiling on an old wood stove,
she sat on a bench where no bills were owing
and nothing sad had ever or could ever happen,
her camera zoom lens having almost as much fun as
14 guys in kilts dancing the can-can in an Easter parade.

Those evershall remain 55 Friday Flash Fiction words for The G-Man.

Hi Jannie the thought of 14 guys doing the can can at the best of times would be hilarious .. but in kilts – now that would take some guts!! Let alone the photographer allocated that job .. I see you’re practising your upward shots?!
I hope BB and Jim will hold you back from those flying kilts …
Love the zooming lens .. it does take great photos .. is it any good at finding chocolate eggs?
Cheers and a big Easter hug .. from a beautiful England .. sunny and warm (shock Iknow!) .. cheers Hilree xoxoxox

Yo G-Yahtzee Man! Hey, don’t you have a kilt or two in your closet?
Happy Easter, hope Blue Bunny finds you.
Hi Natasha, I am liking my Kodak Z981, only 200 bucks! I’ts got a German zoom, and wel all know how Germans make stuff good. And hey, you missed my last post — the Crescent Beach one. I’m sure you’ve been there.
Hi Debbie, and I think those 14 also twirl batons while dancing.
Dearest Linda, I thought the kilt guys might be better left to the imagination! Hapy Easter to you too.
Hi Lynn, 14 seemed an interesting number to visualize. 7 pairs of two I think.
Mama Z.
Aimee– that’s the only bench I know like that, but I’ll gladly tell you where it is.
Hilary! BB’s out ironing his 100% cotton kilt today. Yes, very good at finding chocolate eggs. And yellow jellybeans. Enjoy your sun — sounds marvvy!

Love the pics! 14 men in kilts? Maybe if they all had really good legs and nice butts!
On 22 April 2011 at 11:30 am Jannie said,
Wow, Laurie! You’re all flourescent shining blue and such! Cool. Yes, it’s funny, I actually took the pix from the bench about 3 weeks ago,and this 55 has morphed 100 times.
But yesterday I did catch whiff of that cooking maple fudge out near The Trail. Maybe one of the restauants a block away was cooking flan sauce, or something. Anyway, the kilt guys line came last, like 12:30 in the morning, this morning. And I didn’t even have time to get g-Man’s Easter bonnet on, but I may post him on Sunday, I’ll see how it goes. Are you a good fudge maker? Dad is.
Dearest Nessa, methinks ye fancies a lad in the Scotsman’s attire!! I think my hubby would be GORGEOUS in a kilt. Nova Scotia tartan, with a hint of irish moss at the hem, German lavendar sewed into the little bag those guys always wear. What DO they keep in those anyway? Chapstick? A car key?
Hey lolomouse, maybe in the Harvard Hasty Pudding they have something akin to this. Wouldn’t surprise me if this has been done, or perhaps going on tomorrow in many locales. And I picture the guys in undies, boxers with hearts on them.

Now I’ll have to spend my afternoon Googling it.
First I have to hang a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door…

This 55 sings with Funster wit and
Janniesong, and even though Spring
surges through our hills and dales,
we need to remember that it was
on just such an April Morning
that at Concord, Mass, there was
a shot heard around the world,
and on this very day
in 1836 Sam Houston captured General
Santa Ana at San Jacinto,
in 1899 the Oklahoma land rush started,
in 1970 we celebrated the first Earth Day,
in 2010 the Deepwater Horizon sank into the
depths of the Gulf of Mexico,
in 1936 Glen Campbell was born,
in 1937 Jack Nicholson was born,
and in 2010 Jannie Funster furthered her
reputation as poet, photographer and
mayor of Funsterville.

Dearest Mysterious Helen who has left no blog link, but I think it’s you — Helen From Last Week!? Helen who’s spent a night in Lunenberg!?? Now, you talking you want to be on the bench or watching the cancan Easter Parade kilters?
Dearest Carmen — the 14 all have on boxer shorts, white with red hearts. Others lilac with bunches of grapes. And one each with dinosaurs, Thomas the Train, and Super Man.
I look forward to reading your 55, tho I may not be able to get around to as many blogs as I’d like to until Monday.
Janna! Well, my goodness you’re back — whoohoo. I did see some kilt guys in Google images, the last guy standing on a grate where the wind was blowing up. Did you see that??
LOL on your parting line!
Hey, Deasr Daisy, hoping that kilt guys image has been replaced with ones of fluffy bunnies, dancing bears, laughing children at the beach and tons and tons of chocolate cake??
Happy Easter to you too, Darling! And I am planning on posting again tomorrow.
Dearest Glenn, what site did you get all that info off? Or was it in a book? 1970 — great year! Where were you? Funny how we don’t hear too much about the Deepwater Horizon these days. At least, I don’t. I do hear a lot about Donald Trump, tho. And I like that.
Dearest Dulce, I am afraid the pix are actually from a couple weeks ago, or so. And I smelled the maple fudge on Thursday. But I did pen the line about the kilts finally on Good Friday. Kind of an evolution.
SHEEEEEEEEEILA!!!! I bet you have a lovely new easter bonnet and dress?
Not sure what I’ll wear. Maybe my old peachy polkadot one with my 1940s cap. Yes, that German zoom lens kicks ASS!!! It’s a Schneider Kreuznach, whooofreakinghooo.
Hey, Angela, hope your aging computer didn’t give you too many fits over these pix? Did you find the parade? I hear there’s one in Times Square tomorrow. Do you live near there?
Ayala! Wow, you are one faithful commenter and I’m liking it! How long have you been blogging? Happy Easter to you too — I just put up my updated header with the additions of the cross, butterfly and golden egg. BB was SO proud to find that at the hunt this morning!!
Hey Joey — I think kilts are just begging for bling, so add yours and you’ll start a new Scots trend, I bet! Not a bad little camera, I guess. The zoom is a Mercedes-type.
And like to drink Munchen beer.
Dearest Smiling Ryhmer, thank you so much. Are you a fan of the kilt? And of Mississippi silt?
I hear it’s a treat to beat your feet in the Mississippi mud!!
Dearest Olivia of India, okay — confession, that’s actually an old pecan I think. With vines crawling all over. But I see how you got the maple impression because of the whole fudge mention. Ah, so glad you like these humble pictures. Yes, G-Man — I wanted to put an Easter bonnet on him too, but I was already up late and falling asleep at the end of making this 55. But — Easter comes once a year, so he will get his bonnet in 12 months!!
And in retrospect I could have made his egg much bigger.
Jo Dearest!! Yes, my zoom is a beauty, tho today at the Easter Hunt I saw a couple that were very very big, and I assume probably stronger than mine. Yet — it really is not about the size you have — but what you DO with it, I suppose! That’s what I hear, anyway!!!

That’s funny, fairly nearby where I live there happens to be a swing where no bills are owing and nothing sad had ever happened or could ever happen. Someone put it up right in the middle of the forest on a hiking trail. An inscription on it says “whoever sits on this swing is free.” I hope everyone in the world has a piece of wood, if only a solitary branch or 2×4, nearby, where nothing bad can happen.

14 young men
in front of a wench
that sat on a bench
in April,
they did dance
in kilts
’round a mayp’le
but in this wierd
little deed
they would not succeed
it ’twas just doom
for none had fruit’o’ the loom,
so their dingles did dangle
all were arrested
but bailed,
not jailed.

What a pretty little vine detail from Way~ over there! I can just imagine what new countries I could discover with something like that! If only card n computer memory was infinite…
Fun 55, have seen kicking in kilts before- have a SIL with one. MB’s wedding was a kilt party- Lots of Scotch folks. Now I want fudge, n a warm wood stove! (Cold here, heat off to save $) but will settle for jelly beans.
Happy Easter!

Brian — really? You want a kilt?
If I see one cheap at a yard sale I’ll buy it for you, if you’ll get your wife or one of your boys to take a photo of you in it and post it to your blog for all of us to see!???
I’m serious!!
Dearest Chris of the free forest swing. I hope the swing of time keeps you smiling beneath the spring-green masterpiece of love, now and always. But I’m sure it will! Love gravitates towards you. 2×4s as well, ones for studs in a cathedral of hearth and home.
Dearest Robbi of the Easter time way not so far from the melbourne ocean of light sparkling… When wondering, insert a line about guys in kilts.
Dancing in kilts around the Maypole Maple.
Dearest Snaggle from the starfish lagoon… the last part of your comment reminds me I HAVE charged up your little computer to take into the shop. I’ts in the car. I shall drop if off TOMORROW. Now, with business done…
Yes, I LOVE that little vine! And there was a breeze making those little sweeties seem to be having fun at the spring prom, all dancing. A likt wedding sounds really really fun. I wonder tho, why Scotsmen took to kilt wearing when surely pantaloons were readily available. And probably warm ones! Anyhoo, did you get some fudge? Did you sit by a wood fire?
Did you get some jelly beans? If you like the Starbusrt kind, I can send you Kelly’s, she doesn’t care for them.
Dearest g-Man — thank you. Thank you very much (say in Elvis accent, of course!)
The same to you!
