When Poems Vacation In Hawaii — in 55 words
Flash Fiction 55, Photography | Posted by Jannie on 19 August 2011 @ 5:55 PM 34 Comments

when poems vacation in Hawaii
they check into the best hotels
of course, and order up bottled
fresh air to pour into the sea.
When the margaritas begin to
flow right after breakfast, the
vacationing poems are usually
found swinging from the earrings
of ladies surfing in the ocean and
ladies surfing blogs on laptops
while lounging beneath palms.

That was 55 words for our favorite fictional flasher — G-Man.

Hula day photo from Kelly’s preschool when she was 4.
Poolside photo I took in Galveston last week.
I’ve never been to Hawaii. Have you?
Cloudia lives there. I love her beautiful blog!
And in parting, a Kauai Beach Hilton photo off Google. Meet me there some day?!

Toodle-oodle-oodle-ooo.
Kootchie-kootchie-kootchie-koo.

What cutie pies!
“…swinging from the earrings of ladies surfing…” poems are so fun and free, just like you!
Here in CA, we’re so close to Hawaii so it’s easy to get our aloha on. Been to Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island (my favorite — it has an active volcano that’s been spewing lava for years).
Have a great weekend! xo

Ha, ha, when we were in Vegas we saw quite a few people by the pool on their laptops. I resisted the temptation otherwise I’d never be away from the internet at all!

First off, those girls are just beautiful…poems in their own right. And the poem is fun–the comparison of surfing in the ocean and on the net made me smile.
The first time I went to Hawai’i was in 1959–my aunt and uncle took us to be there when it became a State. What an incredible experience. I was 15, I think. Learned to surf. The islands were still not touristy and so beautiful. I’ve been back twice since and can’t begin to tell you how it’s changed. Just too crowded…even the smaller islands have lost their allure. Just my opinion.
Thanks so much for the link and one of my favorite photos because it’s a place where I feel whole…although it’s become crowded, too. (but not in August)!

As you recall, Melva and I spent a week
on the Big Island of Hawaii last April
to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
A terrific week, cataloged in a Facebook
album, of course. If it wasn’t so damned
expensive, we would visit an island a
year for a time. Love your 55, and G-Man
looks very regal.

Adore Hawai’i! Spent many a summer there as a child. Daddy was born in Honolulu and the Parental Units dubbed me Noelani for my middle name … which didn’t blend too well with my maiden name of Gerstle. A Hawaiian Jew? Who knew? Yet, I do love a glass of guava juice with my pumpernickel bagel
Aloha!

Wow! 15 commenters have alighted, well 14 + me and my scooby-doobie-doo.
I’m such a lucky blogger.
Hey, Mama Z — you went there on your honeymoon, right?
Hey, Vered. Well, I think the last line could have a better flow, or something — but thanks! What do you like so much about Hawaii?
Hey, Belinda — yes, that little blonde on the left was Kelly’s first “best friend” well other than dear olde Mom. And the one on the right moved to Wimberly. Yeah, I like the swinging from the earrings line too. So silly. I’ll have to ask Jim if The Big Island is his favorite too. He lived in Honolulu for 10 years.
Hey, Ayala whose name to me sounds Hawaiin. Yep, gonna be great seeing you on Kauai!!
Hey Alice Audrey, I’m delighted you are able to get on the Net in the Galapagos — it’s like you are sharing a whole different world with us. When are you back in Montana?
Hey G-Man. King Kamayamaya never looked as good as you do in that leaf crown. You have an almost innocent look to you. Almost!!
I did try to put a hibiscus lei on you too but its art needed much more time and 5:55 Friday was fast approaching, so that’ll have to wait until another Hawaii post — maybe one where I’ll really be in that fair State!!
Hey, Daisy, another who can share my Hawaii-deprivedness.
I shall be honored to meet you. (And in case you’ve wondered — I’m really pretty boring in Real Life.)
Oh, Great Hils! Sounds like might good meet-up spot for us. Quite a few miles from you I expect — like half the globe away? Be interesting to Google the distance from you to say, Honolulu. And BTW, a Dylan line just popped into my head, one about I looked for you in ….. Rastabula… Honna-lulu, without getting too deeply in to the memory I’d bet 100% from off Blood On The Tracks, and I think maybe… You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go? Or one of those awesome tunes I may soon listen to again.
Joey,
I guess Internetting poolside is our modern version of reading books and magazines, tho I think some still do that too.
Gautami — thanks! Im assuming you meant the first photo? Or the margarata one? Of of that magical-awesome-looking resort??
Great to see you posted. I will check out some of the 55s in the next couple of days.
Dearest Victoria, what an awesome comment from my star sidebar link friend. Yes, you and D had some really great photos to choose from. I liked his hummingbird shots. And of course I couldn’t resist your yummy palms with this Hawaii post. A shoe-in. If that’s where you live, as depicted — LOVE IT!! I mean even if you do not live there, I still love the photo. Ahhhhh, crowding, changes, loss of wild nature. That does give a bit of a sad feeling. We have plenty of that here in Texas too. But what ya gonna do?? Blog, I guess!!
Glenn — funny but I was thinking to myself as I penned a couple of the above responses, how much money it would be to travel and have fun there. Just in Galveston alone for 5 days I spent a small fortune. Could’ve paid a bass and drummer for 6 whole songs on what Kelly and I blew there. But what is money, really?? We can have ANYthing we want, just not EVERYthing. Priorities, eh? I’d LOVE to see your FB album on that — great tip, thanks.
Hey, Noelani! I’ve never heard the last name Gerstle. I love it! Sounds so… Swiss Alps fun, or something great like that. Skiing, hot chocolate, rosey cheeks and spring flowers the sight of which you can’t help but dance to the music of. But I wanna know… how come your skin looks so lovely white, porcelain dewey with all those summers spent in the Hawaiin sun? Good routines now, I think?
Speaking of chocolate, there’s Dulce! Paradise is where we find it, eh? But palm trees, cute hula maidens and poolside margaritas don’t hurt eh?

Yeah, I guess if poems are going to be in Hawaii, they need to give up their beatnik-style, road-warrior minimalism and nihilism, and indulge a little bit in colorful mixed drinks (and less beatnik-style straight hard alcohol). Good to talk with you again J!

Even poems deserve a holiday.
We visited Oahu and Maui when I was a young kid, and then I spent a summer on Oahu (with a week on the Big Island) as a teen. Beautiful place.

Have I ever explained I wear no earrings or jewelry? Except a necklace sometimes at weddings, that is, n it’s a crystal one on 18ct gold.

Colleen — that was one AWESOME poem!!! Just as good as Billy Collins.
Snaggle — I bet you look extra-lovely at those weddings. Sounds like a very beautiful necklace. For a very beautiful lady — heart and soul, as well as exterior.
Hey, Alice, I see. long long flight I expect. And no place like home I bet!
Talon — I shall enjoy seeing you in that get-up!

No, I never did make it to Hawaii. You had me going for a minute (thinking that you were posting old vacation photos from Hawaii).
You see, I can count on one hand the number of times in my life I’ve been in a place with palm trees. So, when I see grass skirts followed by palm trees, it looks to my brain like you took a trip to Hawaii. You’re so funny, Jannie.
