If There’s A Smell Of Pancakes In The House
Poetry | Posted by Jannie on 27 September 2011 @ 1:50 PM 75 Comments

If there’s a smell of pancakes in the house
and the chirp of some news commentator
in a room where kittens fandango,
____________
if there’s a sun just pounced over the trees
and twenty-nine bored dogs around the hood
longing for something, anything to happen,
____________
if there’s a lonely coffee pot eager to be
understood and bring another round of
pulsing power to a schoolbus morning,
____________
if there are poets scattered over the planet
rolling down their blog awnings for the day
and scraping the mold off their jpegs,
____________
if there are love letters sitting in mailboxes
for happy postmen and postladies to collect
and deliver to hearts that have sleepwalked,
____________
if there’s a smell of pancakes in the house
and lovers skinny-dipping somewhere,
all’s well in the world and always will be.

Jannie, you always put a big smile on my face. Psst (don’t tell my family or the others but I’m a dyed in the wool, shamelessly enthusiastic, optimist, and an unrepenting idealist). Thank you, thank you, thank you. I used to make chocolate chip dinosaur pancakes
. Strangely I’ve never warmed up to syrup. I especially enjoyed the flight of fancy around the blog awnings and kitten fandango. Loved it start to finish!

Heaven! and you ARE!!
So, did you since you read this poem???? Eat pancakes and skinny dip??
Dearest Ayala, and I always feel all is well when I read YOUR blog words.
John, I really like how you say you spent a beautiful morning here this afteroon. I wonder if I’ll spend an afternoon over at your place one morning.
Thank you dear DayDreamerToo. Sometimes in the night the ghosts try to haunt,
but nothing a coffee pancake morning can’t cure!!
HI JANNIE!!!! (me) nice eye.
Fireblossom, TG YOU are not one of those. I was going to write “whistling” posties, but I know some nice mail ladies who are not a fan of whistling.
Ahhhh, Colleen, some days my mind is a bit like a muddy wallow, but I catch the good mood and write!!
Lori, I love you more than ever now!!! Thanks so much, you cutie you.
Anna!!! I will never ever tell your nearest and dearest about your optimism habit!
Did you make those dinosaur pancake shapes from a mold. Or by hand? Ahhhh, your comments makes me so happy!! Our kitten does a great fandango. She is so sweet. And i bet you have awesome teeth, if you never picked up the syrup habit.

Jannie, this is easily the best poem I’ve read all month. It spoke to me. I read it aloud three times! From the get-go of “the smell of pancakes” to the skinny-dipping, and especially the part about the coffee pot “on a schoolbus morning,” this is perfection. Accessible, very real. Love it, love you!

Steve. I read on Answers.com…
i·dyl (īd’l)
n.
1.
a.A short poem or prose piece depicting a rural or pastoral scene, usually in idealized terms.
b.A narrative poem treating an epic or romantic theme.
2.A scene or event of a simple and tranquil nature.
3.
a.A carefree episode or experience: a summer idyll on the coast of France.
b.A romantic interlude.
Cool. I guess the 3b could be the skinny-dipping.
Pat, and you can always eat pancakes while skinny-dipping. They get a little soggy, but are still be nutritious.
Anna, you sound like much more of an artiste than I!! But I’ll try your dino plan. I did make a good Mickey Mouse once. Well, piece of (pan)cake, of course!
Hank — you’re not here in Austin, are you? We had a Hank here once doing some carpentry. He was a lovely wood sculptor too. And dips — no toppings, (or bottomings,) needed!!
Dearest Daisy, this had to pop out of me a couple mornings ago after a bit of a fitful sleep, you know those occasional 3:00 worries? So I had to capture the mood! And glad I did. The skinny dipping just popped in at the last minute, fun when that happens.
Everyone else, forgive me — going to bed. I’ll be back in the coffee pancake morrow!!!

Well, I actually scribe a letter two now and then, but with e-mail, snailmailing has lessened indeed. I had not heard that, no about the school bus emissions. I wonder when the kids are getting exposed?
Hey, Wayside! I know what you meant, I crave almost any food I read about on blogs. Except eggplant, olives and feta cheese.
Sharp Little Pencil, Amy, I read your wonderful comment last night and have been thinking of it on and off today. I love you too!! I do try to be accessible. Fancy obscure words do not necessarily make for the best poetry — as you in your own poems show us. Thanks!!
Hi Divya — glad you got to read it in morning, when I wrote it. early morning, just after I came back in the house from walking her to the bus stop.
Hi Lynne! Am so glad you got to read this in the morning too! And cute gravatar. Are you holding up the trees on the other side of the river in that pic?
Hey, Jackie, coffee too with the stack and syrup? I also have the following available… green tea, water, fatfree milk and lemonade.
Leslie, as the wonderful Maya Angelou says, you may forget what was said but you never forget the way someone made you feel. Glad you could have a little pick-me-up!
Linda — yep, and guess what?? I’m now cooking them on level 7 heat instead of 5 and if monitored well enough so they don’t burn are PERFECT, so crispy on the outside.
Jo! Jo! Jo! Jo! Jo! I am going for a munch now. I’ll see you again later tonight or in the morning. Oh — did you see yourself in my previous post? The one on Paris.

I feel for those bored dogs myself-
the word “Fandango” appeared in the Shrek ForEver After with the Pied Piper making all the Ogres dance- n I automatically thought of you! Then you wrote about it here… In that movie there’s a trap set for Donkey with Waffles too- I neeed more real maple sugar, but it’s costing 8 bux for a tiny bottle now! (No high frutose syrup for me!) But I also like jelly-preserves on the pancakes. Especially blueberry- mmm

Jsut twisting your nice words a bit there to be silly.
Patricia — FINALLY, he’s home, that wandering boy. So let me guess — it’s YOU not he making the flapjacks??
Or maybe the other way around,eh? And why not!
Snaggle, when I go on my morning walk-abouts there are 2 dogs in this one place ALWAYS bark at me from behind their fence. Makes their day I think, a bit of excitement. Yes, fandango made it back into my writing. And I don’t even know how to fandango!! At least I don’t think I do.
I think there was one jazzercise song with a bit of a fandango step in it, as I recall. Yes, syrup SO expensive. And I forgot AGAIN today to replenish. But as you say, jam does make a nice treat on a pancake too. I think we’ve strawberry. Might cook bacon in about an hour. So BACK to bed for Jannie. And yes, twilight aawnings for you indeed, with the days getting shorter now.

I’m so pleased you are sharing your poetry so much now. It’s wonderful. I love how you use words. I couldn’t resist…my favorite stanza was this one:
“if there are poets scattered over the planet
rolling down their blog awnings for the day

Rolling down their blog awning for the day…what a word picture that one is.

Hi Jannie .. the smell of pancakes lured me – but I had to wait a while .. to spend some time savouring each and everyone .. with a little sugar here, a little lemon juice there .. and then the maple syrup .. delicious ..
.. but we’re really in skinny-dipping mode today .. SOOOO HOT!!!!! It’s the 1st October and it is baking .. going to be 28 deg C – over 80 deg F .. that is some temperature for little old England ..
Enjoyed the pancakes .. would rather not have 29 dogs wondering what to do in my hood .. now skinny dipping – ok .. in private?! Cheers and a big hug .. Hilary

Hi Jannie .. beautiful mailbox .. so right to call that photo that! Cherry blossoms would be good now – winter gone, but no – it’s ahead .. mind you mustn’t wish time away ..
Skinny Dipping c/o Wikipedia: The term skinny dip, first recorded in English in the 1950s, includes the somewhat archaic word skinny, known since 1573, meaning “having to do with skin”, as it exposed the naked body.
Hope that helps .. skinny raining would be fun .. well perhaps not!! but hope you get your rain .. we could do with some here too .. the winds too strong for now ..
