One Day We Will Say — a poem

One day we will say

“When you were ten

Walter sketched you.”

Or maybe not.

Who knows

what we will

remember

to say or not

as the years

have ripened

like melons

on a vine

before us.

(Wait, do melons grow on vines?)

:)

One thing I DO know….

Today I say “Kelly, you are awesome!!”

And “I love you!!!!!”

Will you read this one day, and remember that portrait sitting?

Part TWO (Written before part ONE…)

Ten minutes after I met Walter

we were sitting outside my house

in a car he was looking at buying.

When I told him I wrote songs,

he said in his fine German accent

“I wrote a song once!

A lullaby for my baby!!”

And proceeded to sing it

there in that ‘01 Honda Civic,

me in the passenger seat.

And it was sweet.

Now that baby of his is 13

and his babier baby is 10 –  Kelly’s age.

Walter is 85!!!!!!!!

His wife is about my age — 47.

He sketched that portrait of Kelly last week.

PART THREE… (Back To “The Now”)

Walter bought a car. (Finally.)

After driving 6 we had for sale.

So, this is all quite awesome.

And I took this photo of Kelly yesterday.

Over and out!!!

P.S. My darling car business husband whom Kelly gets her gorgeous profile from, made that fireplace mantel and such.

He added that whole room onto our house with this own hands!!!

Yep — construction pix one day! ( I promise!!)

P.P.S.

Walter Meyer is AWESOME!!

He’s a Nazi Germany survivor who stowed away on a ship to South America when he was 17.

I’ve been in his house and bowed in wonder at his gorgeous colorful paintings.

Yo Bri!! Yep, he is a very active and fun 85! Some people just “have it,” eh?! Sio, keep doing YOUR art too, and you’ll follow in Walter’s footsteps. I bet Jim will be like that at 85 too — enjoying his art and fun in life. And hopefully even at 95!

Ahhhh, Steve — dang those blank lines to fill in. But you did AWESOME with your words — thanks. For reading ALL this post I give you an A+ + + + + + + + + + and many air kisses from afar.

Aimee — it can be magical and humbling what brings us together. He wants to do a color portrait of Kelly too, but that’s a secret for now, okay??

Randy — like you are weaving yours slowly-but-surely into mine!! whooooohoooo.

Ahhh Lady Nyo – it is MY distinct pleasure to have you visit here again. Thanks!! I am slowly but surely working my way back to reading blogs. Reminds me to update my message under Blue Bunny’s photo message area in my comments!! Will do that after I post this comment.

Hey, Heaven — it is incredible how memories are always being made every moment. And so great to have a camera to capture and share!!

Thanks you dearest SuzyQ! We are very much enjoying getting to know Walter!! He has a $15,000 parrot painting I’d love to buy for my studio guy — “Parrot Tracks” is the wonderful studio I am lucky enough to record in. But I’ll have to sell a couple of BIG hit songs first to buy George those parrots. :)

Ayala!! Thanks. And please do not think I have abandoned you and your blog. I will be slowly and surely working my way up my list of wonderful bloggers! Would you believe it I’m still returning visits from 4 posts back? That is to say….. you are a good friend to me now and I miss you when I am putting more time into songs than blogging!

Ahhh, thanks Colleen. And their house is PACKED with his art, and his wife’s. Their kids’ art too. Just amazing to see. Maybe he’ll let me take a few pics of some of his art when I visit there next — if I’m bold enough to ask him. Or rude enough to!

And with this I am comment TEN!!!!

The sketches are very good. And thoroughly enjoyed reading all three parts of the poem. Part I — i can relate to very well. Sometimes in rare moments of true and complete satisfaction and happiness, I would make a point to remember and think, “I will remember sitting here telling myself to remember”. It does work if one can remember to do that, I think! :D Thanks for sharing your poem and pictures. :)

Dearest Lovely, I mean Handsome Chris G…. May the years continue to treat YOU well too. If’n I’d a been more organized with this post I’d've included the construction pix. But sometimes poems defy organization. :)

Dearest, Dearest Natasha, who is no doubt enjoying the finest Nova Scotia fall color imaginable (and I’m a little jealous of that, but will try to be a Big Girl and get over it,) Hi!!!! Hearing him sing that lullaby was one of the beautiful moments of my life indeed. So glad I got to share this with you. Ahhhhh, so nice to see you here as always.

Dearest Pat Hatt, second blue noser in a row… morning greetings from this born-and-bred Herring Choker (but then became a very happily transplanted Blue Noser…) Love those double greetings! I am missing N.S. today. Poor Jannie so far from her home and native land. BB has recently donned a Mountie hat if you notice in the sidebar comment gravatars — he’s lonely for the Maritimes too. :)

Ahhhh, Dearest Fred, how could I not share these happenstances that danced together so beautifully to make a story we all could enjoy!!? And I am infinitely richer for your visit here.

John — Dearest, but hopefully never a “Dear John” :) :) here in Funsterland. Yes, Walter proved a most “discerning” customer. His vehicle of choice, after test-driving the various ones for a good 3 weeks, is an ‘02 Toyota Sequoia. Oh, so you are a carpenter too?? AWESOME!! You work on your own house? Yes, Jim started adding onto and remodeling this house almost 19 years ago now!! If you click the following link you will see my posts in the House Remodeling category… http://www.janniefunster.com/category/house-style/

Dearest Lynne… but you must forgive me for now, i shoul return to my song lyrics a while. The Child has only a half-day of school today, so my quiet alone time must be taken advantage of in the next 3 hours. I’ll answer your comment, and the rest at The library this afternoon.

Dearest Lynne — I’m back!! :) The tender precious moments in time that make us remember there is love in everything. Yes, she’ll remember the sitting, I’m sure. 10. So old now. :) Yes, Jim has built 3 wood fireplace mantels of his own design for this house. We only have 2 fireplaces, tho. He actually totally remodeled the first room we added on, and changed out the mantelpiece. We still have the old one! I should bring it in from the garage!!

Ahhh, Dearest Anna Montgomery… the Universe urges that I share as much lovely stuff as possible. And not get mad at my computer when I expect it to do too much, too fast. :) Not too many donuts lately actually. But darn it — I wolfed 4 of those wonderful little Almond Joys last night. Dang you, Halloween candy!!! :) And Anna, YOU my dear, are getting the looooooong comment reply today, as I am happy to talk about my music’s latest!! My singing? Yeah, I guess so, going well. Moving forward. The more time I spend playing my guitar on the chords as I’m writing a song, the better my vocal tone. I’m so happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And guess what??? I now have the good (final) guitar recorded for 9 of the new tunes, with “scratch vocals” for now. My studio guy will have the guitar recorded for the 10th when I’m back in studio in later Nov. And I, Jannie (as in me,) :) will be going above and beyond where this Jannie has thus ventured — on song #11, playing the guitar live while the bass and drummer cut their tracks on a reggae tune called “When I Put On My Sneakers.” Looking forward to it! And you know I’ll be taking pix, if not video-taping. Part of me thinks I’d like a full 12 new tunes, so….. it’s always in the back of my mind what the 12th tune could be — and I want it to be goooooooood. :) I think tho 11 songs are probably enough. We’ll see!! :) The bass and drummer, plus hopefully piano on the same night will be a major financial outlay… but I’ve got a plan to sell some good stuff on eBay. Just need to research what that stuff has generally been selling for. Then take my dazzling pix in afternoon light, and get the listings up. So far I’ve been going into studio just about once a month, takes me about that long to save up my $$$$$. but… I think the songs are developing into some sweet butterflies getting ready to flit about the flowers. :) Oh yeah — Blue Bunny — he’s actualy a champion spelling bee winner. yep, in first grade he won in his class, came in 25th of the 26 kids. :) :)

Hi Dearest RavenBlack. When… I recorded Part 2 into my vocal recorder a few days ago. I do that a lot with my recorder, tape poem ideas. Nice when thoughts come up. And hey, I wish you many, many, many more (actually — CONSTANT –) moments of happiness. Each moment a memory of mistical magic in the making. Hey! I like that!! :)

Okay Suzen — OKAY!!!! “Writing Songs & Singing For Beer & Tofu.” might be my new slogan!!! ;) :) Or even better, “Writing Songs & Singing For & Love Tofu.” What’s a drink with one syllable that’s good for you? Snag will have a good idea (is she reads this.) :) Hugs to YOU too, Doll. Hope you painted after reading this post??

Hi Dearest Lori Kolp. I’ve never actually taken an art class as such, but think I WILL one day. When I’m 60 or so. My schedule is kinda filled up until then with songs and worldwide concerts. Movie appearances and such too. :) I think I’d be best at color expressionism, as I SUCK (pretty-much) at sketching anything except letters and numbers. :)

Dearest My Lynn — I thought it was really really nice! Walter did the main sketch within 10 minutes, and took it home to fill in the blanks. He even presented it framed which is nice!! I took it out tho, to photograph as the glass glare was not working with my camera. Yes, he is a very young 85! I hope he has many more happy lovely years, and that we get to be better and better friends as time goes by. Yes, that is one of my very favorite of the 12 or so mantels I’ve seen Jim has built. Some are in pictures. he started remodeling houses at age 31. The first place he did was a house in Dartmouth, one he put the carpet in FIRST. 44 Dundas Street, Dartmouth Nova Scotia. (I just called and asked him what his first house was!!) The carpet got replaced. And in one house he took out a supporting wall and part of it fell in. :)

HANK!! YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!!!!! Creativitiy gets better with age. What a gift to be given! Everyone has it, but some do not nurture it as much as would be beneficial to them. And I was just thinking — I must make sure to introduce Walter to this post, whenst we find ourselves together again and with computer and a working Internet connection. hmmn, or I should see if he does e-mail. If so, I’ll send him the link to this post. And he might even read this comment. Wow! The world really is a pretty great place.

What a wonderful poem, and a heartwarming
story! Walter is one of those people who
belongs in a poem, a short story, a film–
a real mensch; what stories he could
share over tea or bourbon. The pencil
drawing is lovely, and hopefully Kelly
will treasure it. Will you frame it.
It is amazing how some older men
    never lose their youthful interior
and their virility; a little harder for
the ladies as they hit their fifties
and sixities; but men in their 70’s
    still become fathers. Ain’t nature
    grand?

Dearest GAY — yes, invited you are and were and always will be. And I did it without the stains on the carpet showing!! :) (That’s why I put that throw rug in that spot.) Unquenchable spirit of Walter is right!! Fascinating guy. What a sweetie!!

Dearest RHYME-ME-A-SMILE… we just never know what gems life will drop on us at any minute. Not-so-super computers sounds very interesting! I’ll get over to your blog when your number comes up :) in anywhere from 2 to 12 days from now!

Dearest GLENN! Walter deliverd the sketch to Jim at the shop already framed. Nice touch. Yes, an amazing man with an amazing life. You should SEE his fabulous house on Lake Austin. Art basically wall-to-wall. So beautiful. I said to Kelly “Walter has inspired me. I want to fill all our walls with your art!” She replied “Mom, if you got the money, I got the time!” She Seriously did!! Yesterday.

Ahhh, Dearest DULCE, I never quite know how the words will come to express what I have inside, but somehow they DO come out eventually. And this lovely commenting and connection with you is sweet and unique for me.

OMG SHEILA– you should see the elephants and parrots he painted!!! And an amazing life story of this self-made man. She did get a little fidgity, as can be expected for the sitting, but I think it is great. Yes, I loved part 2 of the story too. Him singing me the lullaby was one of the sweetest moments between humans. So precious.

Dearest LINDA — well, Walter is a pretty fast sketcher. He had the basic portrait done in 10 minutes, then took it home and fleshed it out a bit more. She will remember the sitting I’m sure. 10 is pretty old!! :)

Dearest DAYDREAMERTOO… Well, it’s amazing how we connect, interconnect and change each others’ lives for sure! Hubby is a true artist in his own right. He has added on 5 additions to our home, and completely remodeled the original parts. Still not done, after almost 19 years of changing it, but that’s okay! At least he’s not bored. :)

Hey Dear LORI — his sketch, tho a bit different from the photo, does show her with an expression true to her. My camera angle, lighting and her exact mood was a bit different from the sketch. So Walter really captured her as she was sitting on that chair. And Lori, I’ve certainly felt what you felt in your last post. I think we all have. But art and poems are gifts to the world, as I mentioned. How can we supress that?? Glad my comment was healing to you.

Dearest CLAUDIA, melons on a vine ripening, aging like the wine of our lives in action. And I guess Germans have more than your share of talent in art!! He’s sure done a lot of interesting things. At one time was even on contract with Warner Bros. Movies!!

Dearest JACKIE DICK — cloying makes me want to woof my wienies. :) So glad this is resonating. But then again, the best, uplifting, warm-and-fuzzy stuff does. Hopefully there will be more Walter posts!! There certainly will be lots more Jim and Kelly ones.

DARLING SNAGGLE… Well, I know most times you like to read all the comments, so I took a guess… and was right!???!!! “Writing Songs & Singing For Tea & Tofu???” :) :) :) Clay carved busts, you are so talented! Do you have any of those in your house?

Dearest DOCTOR J… you got that right!! Walter is one in 5 million. So many dear and amazing people out there just waiting to become friends with. Yes, the real picture is lovely. She looks a lot like her Uncle Tom, Jim’s bro, in that too. And her maternal grandmother too, of course.

Hey Dearest GENE. I LOVE photos, as you are probably beginning to realize about me. And ain’t blogging grande for sharing stories in this way!?!??!

Dearest Alice Audrey, nope no tall windows here. But when I lie down on the floor and look up it makes them look taller. I did find a good pic today of Jim putting down the hearth tile! That would’ve been maybe 11 years ago. I’ll have to see about working that into a brand-new interesting post directly related to this one.

Dearest Margaret, yep a real fireplace. We’ve only used it a couple times, but use the original one a lot. But now with the severe drought and burn ban I’m not sure if we even can use it, due to chimney sparks. Wow, how many homes do you have??? Sure. I’ll show you my tall windows if you show me your short ones. Really, your place is much more suited to them. You are in Texas still, right? Or did you get moved?

Dearest Margaret… what no pied a terre in Cannes? No villa in Greece? No hawaiin walk-up? :) :) You are so funny and sweet. When I read your comment about getting the second glass of wine, I popped open and drank a beer. Nice little night cap. One house at a time is all my hubby can afford too — yet… he struggles to pay the mortgage on the one in Nova Scotia too. And but of course — one MUST lose money on house sales to feel one is truly living. :) :) When did you live in San Antonio? And for how long??

Dearest Dearest Hilary… It might be charcoal, yes. You artistes know this kind of thing. He actually wrote a book, info on it in that link to him. (I myself, have not read that article yet. But intend to.) Yes, I hope his wife and or kids are getting down any missing stories. I’d like to interview Walter. You know… that light house / sailboats art, I forget wehre we got it exactly. Wait… let me phone Jim. Hang on!!! Nope, got his voicemail. That painting does remind me of one part of Mahone Bay — actually where Jim had his “beach house.” Now, by the two “sea artefacts, do you mean those taller things on either end? If so, those are actually mini antique gas pumps. This is in Jim’s office corner of the house. The middle portrait is of Kelly in her Christening bonnet, age 9 months. Flanked by two award plaques from some of Jim’s model railroad buildings. And you know what I like about that protrait sitting photo?? The dachhund, Kelly’s bare foot dangling so cute. And the 2 fish in the tank facing each other, feeling the love of the moment too.

Dearest Alice Audrey… Yep, still in Texas. Well…. maybe I’ll do a “Windows of Jannie & Jim” post!!!!!!!!!! :)

I enjoy watching an artist sketch. It’s magical how they can translate a person, thing or their imagination onto a piece of paper.

Your poem certainly caught that magic.

    Thanks,

Hi Jannie–this is as sweet as the ripened melons (which I believe do grown on vines.)
