11 of my 12 tunes for Temporary Sky now have REAL BASS.  Did I mention the bassist is Terry Hale who's played with George Strait for 30 years?  Totally!

Thursday, July 12, '07
In mid - September gonna slap some real bass on 11 of the 12 of the tunes, including bowed bass on "Bones."   Yah!!

Sunday, July 8th, 2007
So, I won First Place for my "Mystery Tune," in the instrumental category.  Total surprise!  I didn't even expect that one to make it to finals, let alone win.  You just never know do you?

Stevie Funster is MOVING AWAY... Boo-Hoo.  But begins a new musical era in my life.  Time to learn more of my songs on guitar and strike out solo or with the two remaining Funsters.  It's all good.  No - it's all GREAT.  Life's Great!

Last night, talking about last night.  Violin on the last two tunes and four complete main vocals.   Just one vocal left.  Then scads of harmony vocals.  Cookin'!  Not back in the studio for another two weeks, then a few weeks off, then Mixing and Mastering.

Tuesday, April 3' 07
Brace yourself, folks for yet another  "Oh.  Mi.  God."  This time for the violin-er, (Kelly's term.)  Richard Bowden.  I slaved for 3 days (even skipped Jazzercise yesterday - yes really!,) to wrestle a few tunes into notation.  But did Richard Bowden need any notation - let alone chord charts of any sort?  Uh... No!  Listened to the songs once (maybe twice,) and played some very very - for lack of a better word... cool - stuff.  (I like working with geniouses.)   Sonic sample of his gift directly below.  This is the violin solo from "I Miss You Tonight," the song I wrote for Rosie that she hasn't heard yet.  She will once it's all polished up.

Am I really selling my precious Rode K2 Made-In-Australia studio mike I slaved so long to buy?  Yes!  If I had the fabulous pre-amps, limiters, custom-made studio, private engineer, etc.  maybe I'd keep it around.  Plus, I've got a drummer to pay soon.   Wow - I'm such a  risk taker.  Next I'll be taking a 2nd mortgage out on the house to hire a basoonist.

Thursday, February  1st '07  Monday we got some sweet, sweet guitar laid on 6 tunes.  Awesome.  Got some stellar percussion laid Tuesday with more drums to come in March.   Back for vocals, violin and bassoon and ??? in April.   Mixing and mastering in May.  Why stretching it out so long?   $$$, Baby, $$$.  Gotta save it up.   These musicians are great and worth every penny but I'm your average less-than-monetarily-rich Jannie.  (Plus want to wait til after Cedar Fever Crapola Season to sing.)

I am very happy with my progress and grateful God cursed with me with melodies and a fondness for words that rhyme.

Thursday, January 18th, '07     Happy Belated New Year, Y'all.
So... I'm back in the studio Jan 29th and 30thThis will be fun as I plan not to sing at all, Cedar Fever Season, can't trust my voice.  Plan is to put guitar and drums down for those sessions.  Then not back in studio until March and April, yes a slow way to go about it but better to have songs that sound good rather than having rushed them.   And thinking I'll book the final sessions in May and git 'er done!

Friday Dec. 29th, '06
I've basically taken a whole month off since the Song-Writing Symposium, what with The Holidays most successfully navigated and all ...  but just now (5:00 a.m.) have given myself permission to realize that it was okay to take time off.  It's okay!  It's okay!!!!!  Been a bit of a song vacation for me, which I realize now my heart and spirit needed after two years of non-stop work at writing, joining a band, building our websites and improving my voice and guitar.   And you know what?!  I'm feeling fine.   Fucking-A!  (Whoops, sorry about the language.)

Thursday, December 7 '06  Sitting here drying my hair which slows down my writing a lot but I must multi-task.  If I really had my shit together I'd be doing my vocal scales now too while stirring  figgy pudding with my left foot and stringing Christmas lights with my right.

Monday, November 20, '06  My niece is 7 years old today!  Happy Birthday, Alyssa.

I tell ya, the whole 3-day Song Symposium was real eye-opener for what's a commercially viable tune.  I thank Allen Shamblin and Kimmie Rhodes for sharing their incredible well-written songs and inspiring me to new heights of possiblilty.

Learning from people in the music biz, my thought and song process is veering towards cutting really really good demos of a few songs instead of trying to fill a whole album.  (For now anyway.) Yeah.

Maybe John Deere would gobble up "I Need A Man" or one of those crime scene shows could use "Bones."  I won't know until I try.

Thus I veer now. XO

Tuesday, November 14, '06 I should probaly just crash right now.  Take the rest of the morning off.  Lay down on that comfy bed over there and succumb to silken slumber.   Been working what seems non-stop for weeks.  But that's how things get done.  And I'm back in the studio on Wednesday the 22nd, gotta be prepared.  Gotta work, work, work.  Especially since I want to get two more full vocals and at least two more songs' background vocals recorded that night.  Ideally would like to go into the studio also with a complete lyric for the Mystery Tune that dangles so close yet so far from me as I drift through my days and nights.  Entered Mystery Tune as an instrumental called "Love Could Be The Thing" for the contest, recorded the melody on my piano keyboard using the "clarinet" tone, one of the least suckiest sounds I thought I could get away with.

Oh, by the way, I guarantee all 5 songs I entered will either win, place or not even show.  (Winners announced this Friday night at the Symposium kick-off booze fest.)

Wanna hear about Yesterday?

Did an hour of cleaning, (yes, house-cleaning!) Finished my Jannie Funster ad for the ASG brochure, looks cute if I do say so. (If my scanner worked I could show it here.  Tomorrow I'll print out a copy on the Kinko's cardstock I used for the border and take a photo of it, then upload said picture... maybe it's time to think about investing in Photoshop?)  Put down some background vocals for the contest version of "Flying Home To Me" and burned 3 copies, one to submit to the Country category and one to Singer-Songwriter and one to send for copyright.  Then, while trying to unearth the Dillard's bill they say I'm late on again, I found a letter I'd started to Eunice (in Ireland,) in May before I even created this website.   Ended the letter quickly with lots of XOXOXOXOs and told her to check my site to see why I'm not so up on letters lately.

Filled out the song contest entry forms and made sure the lyric sheets were attached with rubber bands as directed.  Got the Form SR filled out and the package addressed for copyright on "Flying Home To Me."
Another $45 for that.  Shit, it was just $20 a couple years ago.

Showered and found clean clothes.  Hair turned out not the best.

In a five minute span before I left at 2:45 to pick up Kelly from school, I rushed to marinate the porkchops, check the dogs' and bunny's water jugs, make Kelly's snack.   Bring her milk, gymnastics leotard ...  and Charlie and Lola sticker-book in case I needed to keep her occupied and quiet somewhere later.  Oh, and my sunglasses, checkbook, tampons,
Advil and Scholastic book order.  Double-checked to make sure I had all the stuff for the post office and the package with final song entries to drop at Music Makers for the contest.

Somehow managed to leave the house on time to pick up Kelly at 2:45 but was so engrossed in thoughts of all I still l had to do, I drove almost 2 minutes past her school.  Backtracked.   Later realized I'd forgotten my Chapstick which is, next to water and mascara, the one thing I cannot live without.  Then realized I'd forgotten my journal too which was to be my little pleasure-escape in case I reached the restaurant before Mardi.

Got to gymnastics only 5 minutes late, went to the P.O. while she was there.  Actually saw the last half of gymnastics, she's getting so good at pushing her arms straight up on the uneven bars.   [Never had the chance to take gymnastics (or ballet or acting,) when I was a kid, so glad for her.]   After that, to Guitar Centre to buy her a mini conga drum she's been asking for since her birthday, then dropped her off at the Kids Clubhouse.  Stopped at a convenience store to buy a Chapstick and mini notebook.  Dropped off the songs for the contest and went to meet Mardi.

It's 11:59 a.m.  I could sleep for an hour and still wake to do two hours work.  Yeah, I think I'll take that nap now.

But first I have to call the City of Austin Utilities to tell them the check's on its way.

Friday, November 10, '06 Very happy about being able to work in the studio today.  Got a new song recorded, "Flying Home To Me," which I'm sending off for copyright tomorrow and  dropping off for the song contest Monday as the deadline's been extended - yahoo!!  Also got some background vocals done on 3 other tunes.  And jettisoned an older song, going to come up with an even bigger and better one.  Sometimes we are far better off knowing what to part with than to hang onto if it's not working.  Fish or cut bait, as the fullah says.

Next studio time... the night before Thanksgiving, (taking what time I can get.)  Want to have the tracks for Monday Morning and Motorcycle Cop done for then.  In fact, I really should call him tomorrow to set up a couple of sessions for January, which will finish my tune-fest (for this CD.)   Get the jazz guitarist set up for then.  And a violinist.

Just one more month 'til I can perm my bangs again.  Just one more month.

Saturday, Nov. 4th, '06

Thursday, Nov. 2nd, '06  So these Baby Ruths and Snickers from Kelly's Hallowe'en candy are sliding down nicely for breakfast.

Monday is the last day to have the songs post-marked for the ASG contest, 4 ready and one to go, which I should be working on now instead of this.  But...

I have been stumbling haphazardly down the halls of the vast blogosphere maze.  Wow what a world I didn't realize was out there, thousands upon thousands of bloggers, all circling around and connected.  I think I may well be the only one out here without the "Comments," function.  Just as well, I don't think I could keep up with all those posts.

Sunday, Oct. 29 '06  Can't wait for tomorrow so I can get back to work.

Friday, October 27, '06  Thought I had something brilliant to report but the thoughts have evaporated.  Music News... Sending 3 new tunes for copyright tomorrow, will post them on my Listen page tomorrow at 7:14:03 a.m. CST.  "Kissing 39 Good-Bye," "Sugar Lady" and "Bones."

Wednesday, October 25, '06 Two amazing days in the studio yesterday and the day before, got six whole vocals done!!!!!!  (Was hoping for maybe four.)  And started the harmonies for "Hearts & Bones." Going to pick up the rough mix CD later today and will post snippets of the new tunes by week-end.  You're going to LOVE "Bones"!   Speaking of which, I need to update my lyrics page.  Yes, I'll get to that after I publish this.

Now what?  Well, doing my dishes would be a wise choice.

Next scheduled date in The Studio is not until Nov. 22nd, yes the night before Thanksgiving, but hey, I'm taking what studio time I can get.  Possibly on Nov. 10th but I won't know if the other guy is a no-go until the 8th.  So, I just need to keep plugging away here, still "Flying Home To Me," to get the tracks done for, "Mystery Tune" lyrics, better drums for "Motorcycle Cop," better ending for "Monday Morning," plus work on my harmony notes so I'll know what the hell I'm doing when I finally do get back to the studio.  Oh - and keeping up my vocal exercises of course, at least 5x weekly 35-40 minutes a pop.  Vocal stamina, I totally had it in the studio these past pays because I've been working my chords and treating my voice right.  (Even avoided wine and pizza at a party last Saturday night before a few friends and I helped our Emmy-winning song-writing friend Michael J. Lewis by singing choruses on his latest album.)    Jannie?!?  Avoiding wine and pizza?!  Wow, she must be getting serious about singing.

It will be so fun to start writing some new tunes for my second CD.  Never a dull moment and loving it!

Sunday, October 22, '06  Had a wicked-bad migraine yesterday but woke up normal and grateful to be back to me.

My pants are baggy again so I guess I've lost those 7 or 8 lbs.  What's for breakfast?

Thursday, October 19, '06  Sitting here doing my voice exercises as I type this.  Do my vocal chords sense I'm moon-lighting?   Just remember those deep breaths.   So far, I've actually been a bit slack on my Cafe Wanderings  but I'm still getting work done, other kinds of work - putting chords to my lyric sheets for the Monday and Tuesday studio sessions.  Guitarwork for "Flying Home To Me."   Fixed the sour notes on the "Bones" piano track.  The Mystery Tune lyrics haven't started coming together yet - lots of time before the Song Contest, may even make it an instrumental.   Holy shit, I still have so much more to do!

Tuesday, October 17, '06  12:32 in the afternoon.  Well, I've just been sitting on my keester here in front of the PC for 30 mins, preceded by being on the phone to my almost-9-months-pregnant sister in Canada for over an hour, preceded by dropping Kelly off for school an hour late, preceded by sleeping in an hour late, preceded by getting to bed too late, preceded by another DVD episode of season 1  "24", preceded by an (as usual,) up-lifting song critique night with the buds, preceded by something but I can't remember exactly what.  I better get to work!

Tuesday, October 10, '06 1:15 p.m.  So, friends and neighbors, it's raining, just as I requested.  And tomorrow I set sail upon my inspir-
ational voyage of Cafe Wanderings.  Wish me luck.  For about two years now I have been sequestered in this song-writer's garrett every day.   It's time to venture to the outside world to see if life really exists.

Have decided which 5 new songs to enter in the up-coming ASG song contest, deadline Nov. 5th...

"Bones," (jazz,)  new song about a serial killer (light-hearted!)
"Sugar Lady,"  (blues) tune about a sweet tooth (who, me?!)
"Kissing 39 Good-Bye Again", (jazz,) having to face aging
"Flying Home To Me", (rock,) soldier coming home from the war
"Mystery Tune," (singer/songwriter,) have complete melody and arrangement, now in search of mind-shattering lyrics.

Once I've sent them for copyright I'll post them all on my Lyrics page.

Saturday, Oct.7th, '06  Did you read my guestbook post from Diane George today?  Yes, the Diane George of Australian fame I wrote a post on many moons ago.  108 buttons on her quilt!  She's an amazing, amazing person.  Loved her since 1994 (and even before I met her.)

Hey, I've had this website up almost 6 months.  Who knew?  Little pigeon-toed, knock-kneed, six-year-old Jannie would one day take it upon herself to fashion a site in the loveliest of pink imaginable?

So... it's a busy day planned: grocery shopping, house cleaning, laundry, dye my roots, a birthday party for one of Kelly's classmates and another dinner party here - we had such a good time 2 weeks ago we just had to do it again.  God, I hope it will at least live up to the last party, always a latent (and equally unrealized,) fear one's party will not elevate all participants to a most-high state of feverish grandeur.

Over the coming 2 weeks I shall be a cafe wanderer and I'm sooo excited at the prospect.  Once I get all my music tracks fixed (a bit of slow going yesterday,) I will be free to linger and lurk in cafes and spy on people for lyric inspiration.    Some places that come to mind are Quack's on The Strip, Cafe Mundi and Cafe Caffeine.  I shall begin my wanderings on Tuesday.   Who knows what adventures lie ahead for me as I journey to the very bowels of this city for my art?!  I hope it rains at least a couple days.  I won't wear black of course but perhaps I'll pull out some navy for the wanderings.  And buy a new pair of dark comfortable shoes for the occasion of my extreme freedom and happiness at being able to realize my dreams.

Hey, I got a letter and photos from my special friend C. Cannone in France.  Thanks, sugar.  Her stationery is always so yummy.  And her attention to using pretty and / or artistic stamps does not go un-noticed by me.  Maybe during my cafe wanderings as a reward for lyric break-throughs I will answer letters.   Dear Doris in Gaggenau has been waiting patiently too.   And pretty funny-bunny Jo in England.   And Dear Jean in Scotland.  And Wonderful Eunice in Ireland.   Man, I can't wait!!!

Oh, next ASG song contest announced.   Going to submit 5 or 6 this time so I beter get cracking, deadline is November 5th at midnight. (Are post offices really open 'til midnight?)

Wednesday, Oct. 4th,'06  I am going to post some new news very, very soon.  I promise, Doris!

Okay... later that day...  11:32 p.m. to be precise...

Well, I woke around 6:30 today and stumbled somehow through 4 auto title transfers.  Got Kelly up around 7:30, had her to school by 8:30.  Came home.  Had a banana and some chocolate pudding for breakfast and fell asleep in bed with my laptop while attempting to make progress on a rock waltz Mystery Tune, the final one for "Songs From A Car."

Next thing I remember it was 11:30 a.m. and I woke feeling pretty refreshed.  Skipped lunch and had  a shower.  Hmn, what happened next?  I don't really remember.  Did pick Kelly up at school and dropped her at ballet.  Went to MacDonalds and had a Big Mac, went to the post office and bank and still got to see the last half of ballet class.

Another night in the Real Studio, from 7:30 to about 9:45.  Got the Band-In-A-Box tracks up-loaded for 4 more songs and have minor revisions to make on 3 others before loading those next time.

Hey, Doris.  You are probably sleeping in Germany now - at least you should be, or soon to wake up.  I'll email you soon.

Next Real Studio dates, October 23rd and 24th.  Going to kick ass then.

Beauty sleep beckons.

Friday, Sept 15th, '06  September is exactly half over, Whoo-hoo!

Friday, Sept. 1st, '06 Three consecutive mornings in the Real Studio were pretty intense, whew.   My body and mind were so jacked up about
working in said real studio that I'd only slept 3-4 hours a night from Sunday to Wednesday.  (I'm usually a 7-hours a night kind of gal.)  Took me these past two days to physically recover.

I've got more work and changes to do than I had anticipated but am grateful for learning how my music will ultimately sound best.

Tuesday, August 29th, '06  Laptop problems and a tired voice in the studio today.  No vocal today but tomorrow is full of promise and light.

Tuesday, August 29 '06  I have never been happier with my music, two more vocals mapped yesterday morning.  If anyone reading this has a dream I say - just do it.  Push through your fears (which you can whoop the asses of,) and go for it.

Saturday, August 25, '06 Parrot Tracks studio... I finally made it there after having to cancel my first two sessions because the Kellster has strep.  Last night from 7:30 to 11:30 we got two songs laid out.

Friday, August 18th, '06  Re-entry onto American soil successful.  Why do I always cry when I make it through Customs, as I always do at Church?

Nary a tear shed yesterday at Kelly's first day of Kindergarten, been there and done that her first day of pre-school.

Thursday July 27th, '06  Just 9 days till we fly North.  Not sure what Internet access I'll have while at my parents'.  Time to move into the 90s and get a computer, Ma and Pa.  Ah, Ruthie... she'll let me go online.  Yes!

Tuesday, July 11th, '06  So guys, just been drifting along on the summer breeze which makes me feel fine (flowing like the jasmine in my mind...)  blogging my way along and eating too many potato chips.  Did the dishes twice last week!  Mostly contemplating my future retrospective and dreaming of beach fires with old friends in Canada next month.   Priceline.com, do you have my answer yet?

Wednesday, June 28, '06  And time keeps right on a-marching along.  Just had a comment added to my Guestbook by my dear, dear, dear pal in England, Jo.  One of the penpals I began a life-long relationship with in 1994.  Hi Jo, if you read this!

Waiting for Jae's word but it's only 6:27 a.m. so it may be another hour or two.   (We alternate shooting each other words for the object writing.)  I admit it's not always easy coming up with an interesting blog writing, I constantly live in dread that nothing will come up and people will find out I'm really a boring non-prose writer...  but somehow I seem to get the job done.  With songs tho, I know something will always come up!

Tuesday, June 20th, '06  So I won first prize in Lyrics and fourth in Jazz, not a bad start for my first song contest.  Am pumped now to  really reel myself  in and craft some great tunes.  When Kelly starts Kindergarten in August I'll have plenty of time to get cracking at least five days a week.

This week she and I are at Vacation Bible Camp and having a ball.   I'm involved in the music end of it - so it's pure joy.

Saturday, June 17th, 2006  Just logged onto ASG and see that two of the tunes I entered in the Lyrics  category have placed in the finalists too.  Hot dog!!  "Hearts And Bones" and  "Bob's Coffee Shop"  Yessss!  Even though I will be re-writing the bridge of the former due to my work with Pat a couple of weeks ago, the tune is obviously still a worthy one.

Thursday, June 15th, 2006    Breaking News...  Both tunes I entered in the ASG Jazz category are  finalists.  ("What'll I Do With Me" and "I Need A Man...") Yesss!!!  Holy Sh*t - two of my songs made it into the finals and  I'm up for Jazz awards!!  Not bad, I think for my first time entering a song contest.
Sunday, June 11th, 2006   Lost my Kerr-Virginity yesterday, finally!    (Kerrville Folk Festival, Guys.) Going back next year for sure, hopefully as a finalist in New Folk.  Going to give it my best shot.  Looking back into the contest Archives it took Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Darden Smith and others a couple of tries before they won.   Noticed Shawn Colvin was a finalist once but not among the 6 winners.  Everyone has their own story and journey.   What matters is that they all wrote great songs, believed in themselves and stuck with it.   Hope my songs will cut the mustard.

Tuesday, 06-06-06 (666, Ooo - spooky.)

Newly reminded of  the true intent of  object writing exercise at Pat's 2-day seminar this past weekend, my sense-bound imagery is somehow back with a vengeance.   Wonder why it's easier for me to dip into serious topics more easily than light-hearted ones?  Tomorrow I will call to the Wedgie Wedding and Drinking With Famous Dead Guys side of me.  Can't promise anything but we'll see...   Jannie   XO

Thursday, June 1st, 2006 ... DHL tracking says that at 8:15 this morning my business cards were "out for delivery".  I could get that knock on the door At Any Minute.

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006 ... Whoa, almost June, how did that happen!?   My bangs perm looks a little ragged, hoping it's gonna settle down.  Went to consult with George at Parrot Tracks Studios last night to make sure my levels are correct to record my vocals over.  Lot of work left to do on the tracks.  Less than 2 months 'til I'm in his studio, eek.

Kelly's at acting camp this week.  My big girl!

I'm going to go shopping for pants tomorrow.  It's hard to find the perfect pair of pants but I know they are out there.  When they present themselves to me I may even have to buy two pairs.

Monday, May 15th, 2006  Dropped off my  tunes for the ASG song contest a while ago.   Good luck, my Babies.  Make Mama proud or humble, preferably the former.  But humble will work too, meaning if I win absolutely nothing I'll pick my pride and my pen up off the dirt and get cracking on new and better tunes.
