Does It Mean I’m Crazy?

{ Edit: as I just mentioned in the comments to Rhett, without knowing the song’s melody or feel, try to imagine my vocal delivery as part Madeline Khan, part Latka Gravas, with a bunch of Robin Williams thrown in . }

1.) I play it on my tricycle.

I play it while I’m watching my t.v.

I play it eating jell-o

and I play it while I’m talking to my tree.

I play it in the heat of day and when the night is cool.

I play it in the shower, in the bathtub, in the pool.

Does it mean I’m crazy ‘cause

I play my ukulele all the time?

——————–

2.) I play it while I’m coloring.

I play it while I’m doing arts and crafts.

And when I’m weaving baskets

I can even play my uke behind my back.

I play it for the voices having fun inside my head.

I play it for the people living underneath my bed.

Does it mean I’m crazy ‘cause

I play my ukulele all the time?

________

Bridge:

Sweet ukulele

Oh, the music I hear

Dear, sweet ukulele

Whenever you are near.

___________

3.) Here where they have brought me

all the doctors and the nurses are so nice.

They keep me medicated

and my rubber room is always clean and bright.

I play it in group therapy and everybody sings.

It doesn’t even matter that my uke has got no strings.

Does it mean I’m crazy ‘cause

I play my ukulele all the time?

Does it mean I’m crazy ‘cause

I play my ukulele all the time

all the time,

all the time,

all the time,

all the time…

——————–

(Well, does it?)

Me! (Yes, Me – Jannie!)

Please don’t hate me (remember I have to suffer the perming-of-the-bangs every 3 months to keep from looking like something from Planet Gorpio,)  but… inspired by your creative energies, I stumbled upon my very own ukulele song idea and ran with it.

You guys shared some really really cool ideas for ukulele songs and I THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. The following Four Funstering Friends even went so far as to come up with entire song lyrics for this fest…  Feel Free To Read – Glenn,   Feel Free To Laugh – Doug Palmer (Lane Savant,)   Exit Stage Right – Snaggletooth and Ink Marks On A Blank Page - Robbi.  Robbi and Glenn actually submitted TWO whole songs!  Plus Jung’s Programme Notes – Miles and Deeper Issues – Dot  offered complete verses.
But out of the big blue sky fell an idea I hope will work.  I’m still honing the second verse but I’ll post the lyrics very soon — maybe as early as Friday.  And I may even re-solicit your songwriting charms, as I’m not sure yet about the bridge.
The finished song will of course, be lovingly show-cased on YouTube sometime.  Yep, with me singing it.  (Help us all, Lord.)
Anybody got a $20.00 good used uke for sale, non-plastic?   I can pay up to $9.95 for S & H.

Ukulele Me!

Song Stuff | Posted by Jannie on 14 January 2009 @ 7:16 AM 63 Comments

I wanna write a funny song about a ukulele!  A song that either asks or answers a burning question or is a cautionary tale — a.k.a. some raging motivation has to make me burst forth singing about a ukulele in the first place.
I already have an image or two in mind and tons of melodies to choose from.  What I really need is YOUR help, by way of a wafer of lyric or plot to jumpstart me.   And if one of your ideas sparks me and I use it, even if it’s only one line - you and I will share the songwriting credit 50/50.  Or, if I combine ideas from more than one of you, we’ll all split things evenly, as is common songwriting practice.
So bring it on, Funster Friends!  Ukulele me!!!  No idea too silly or seemingly inconsequential to be considered.
I won’t be posting again until  Monday, January 19th at 7:16 a.m. (Texas Time,) to give this brainstorm adventure top billing here on my humble site, so be sure to get your ideas in by then.  Feel free to comment as many times as your brain desires!

THANKS!!

I Need Man With A Chainsaw

My musical’s plot, setting and character motivations are totally starting to come together!
Show will be set at an outdoor cafe with a motorcycle cop, a man with a chainsaw, a girl who had a wedgie on her wedding day, a broken-down Toyota, three goats, two chickens and a cow.  (Well kinda on those last 3.)
Here’s an Mp3 of part of the title track…   i_need_a_man_snippet
And here’s the Wedgie Wedding song, most of it…  wedgie_wedding_snippet
The third verses of each of those is  a bit of a secret.  You’ll have to come to the show to hear the twist at the end of each!
(P.S. above’s a picture our house in Nova Scotia which is currently not rented, bla, bla, bla,  whose trees do need a man with a chainsaw.  But that’s another story.)

Crescent Beach, 10 cords of wood and a musical

Kelly and Alyssa in Canada two months ago.
Evan-shually I’ll have big pix in my posts by default and will be blogging until about 2064 or so.  Big plans, people, big plans!
Canada…
Dad stacked 10 cords of firewood in his basement last week!  Split from trees he grew and cut himself and hauled a mile from his back lot last winter.   With his horses and sled.   Over snow and such.  In Canada!!!  And he’s 72.  What a guy.  Lots more on him, Mom and the rest of my clan evan-shually.
Jim, Kelly and I will be moving back to Canada In a couple years – lock, stock and summer apparel.  It’ll be hard to leave wonderful Austin but all of our 368 relatives (and that’s only out to 3rd cousins,) are in The Great White North.  And musically it could be a great fit for me as N. Y. City is actually a lot closer to Halifax than to Austin – less than a 3-hour flight.  The theatres of Broadway do beckon so brightly for the musical “I Need A Man,” I’m writing.   Plus, it’s only 2 hours from Halifax to Bermuda for those winter respites.  And direct non-stop flights to London, maybe even Paris fly out every day.  So maybe the move back won’t be so bad after all.
